\n\tWell before Ghost<\/a> and Sleep Token<\/a> took anonymity to the extreme, Kiss<\/a> kept rock & roll fans guessing with simple makeup and high heels. But no matter how obscured Ace Frehley<\/a>\u2019s human face and torso may have been, it was easy to discern that a comedian with crackerjack timing lived beneath his Spaceman costume. <\/p>\n \n\tKiss\u2019 lead guitar player, who died<\/a> Thursday at 74, had a razor-sharp wit and electrifying, often imitated laugh \u2014 fans called it the \u201cack!\u201d <\/a>\u2014\u00a0that counterbalanced Gene Simmons\u2019 perpetual sourpuss. If Simmons\u2019 Demon was Kiss\u2019 scowl, then Frehley\u2019s Spaceman was its cackle.<\/p>\n \n\tLook no further than the band\u2019s infamous 1979 appearance on <\/em>Tom Snyder\u2019s Tomorrow Show<\/em>. Even for non-Kiss fans, it\u2019s required viewing, simply for how it captures the freewheeling, unrehearsed nature of the era\u2019s talk shows. When Snyder attempts to introduce the members, each in full costume \u2014\u00a0Paul Stanley as his Starchild, Peter Criss bare-chested as the Catman, Simmons in demonic getup, and Frehley in the Spaceman gear \u2014\u00a0 he mistakenly calls Simmons the \u201cbass\u201d player, pronounced like the fish.<\/p>\n \n\t\u201cI\u2019m not the lead guitarist,\u201d Frehley interjects<\/a>, \u201cI\u2019m the trout player.\u201d<\/p>\n \n\tThe interview continues to derail. \u201cTell me what each outfit means,\u201d Snyder says, starting with Frehley. \u201cI think this outfit is self-explanatory,\u201d Frehley replies, letting loose that funhouse howl.<\/p>\n
