\n\tSome music fans will spend their entire lives mourning the concerts they were never able to attend. Concert films have remedied this slightly, but Janelle Monae<\/a> has discovered an even better solution: time travel. <\/p>\n \n\tIn conversation with Lucy Dacus<\/a> for Rolling Stone<\/em>\u2018s Musicians on Musicians<\/a> series, Monae recalled her experience seeing David Bowie<\/a> perform The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars<\/em> live approximately a decade before she was born. <\/p>\n \n\tIt all started with an inquiry about Halloween, a holiday that Monae plans for two years in advance. It fulfills the creative pull she feels towards transformation and world-building in music. \u201cI think when I saw David Bowie,\u201d they said, before Dacus cut in for clarification, asking, \u201cYou saw him?\u201d <\/p>\n \n\t\u201cI did,\u201d Monae confirmed. \u201cI traveled back into the 1970s, and I saw him do \u2018Ziggy Stardust\u2019 and the \u2018Spiders From Mars.\u2019 It was incredible.\u201d There\u2019s more to the story, but Dacus wanted to make sure she was hearing all of this right. \u201cYou traveled back?\u201d she asked, again.<\/p>\n
