{"id":49719,"date":"2025-10-22T12:13:14","date_gmt":"2025-10-22T12:13:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/musicianvoice.com\/index.php\/2025\/10\/22\/mammoth-the-end-review\/"},"modified":"2025-10-22T12:13:14","modified_gmt":"2025-10-22T12:13:14","slug":"mammoth-the-end-review","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/musicianvoice.com\/index.php\/2025\/10\/22\/mammoth-the-end-review\/","title":{"rendered":"Mammoth, &#8216;The End&#8217;: Review"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>In the two years since\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ultimateclassicrock.com\/tags\/wolfgang-van-halen\/\" target=\"_blank\">Wolfgang Van Halen<\/a>&#8216;s music project\u00a0released\u00a0its second album, <a href=\"https:\/\/ultimateclassicrock.com\/mammoth-wvh-mammoth-ii-album-review\/\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Mammoth II<\/em><\/a>, the band shortened its name from Mammoth WVH (a tribute to his <a href=\"https:\/\/ultimateclassicrock.com\/tags\/eddie-van-halen\/\" target=\"_blank\">late father<\/a>&#8216;s band, <a href=\"https:\/\/ultimateclassicrock.com\/tags\/van-halen\/\" target=\"_blank\">Van Halen<\/a>, and acknowledgment of his own identity) to the scaled-back <a href=\"https:\/\/ultimateclassicrock.com\/tags\/mammoth-wvh\/\" target=\"_blank\">Mammoth<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s about all that&#8217;s changed in the interim. For their third album, <em>The End<\/em>, Van Halen once again handles all instruments, singing and writing duties by himself; the music, similarly, lands in the middle ground between early 2000s hard rock and a contemporary update.<\/p>\n<p>Mammoth is a modern-day band with one foot in the past of\u00a0Van Halen&#8217;s youth, so the mix of sounds that surges throughout <em>The End<\/em>\u00a0\u2014 hard rock, melodic metal, grunge and electronic \u2014 is genuine. At no\u00a0time does Van Halen attempt to exploit his lineage,\u00a0aside from recording the album at his dad&#8217;s 5150 Studios.\u00a0<em>The End<\/em>\u00a0was undoubtedly\u00a0made by someone who grew up in the late &#8217;90s and early 2000s.<\/p>\n<p><strong>READ MORE:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/ultimateclassicrock.com\/category\/album-reviews\/\" target=\"_blank\">2025 Album Reviews<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Produced by Michael &#8220;Elvis&#8221; Baskette, whose work includes records with the alternative metal\u00a0bands Sevendust, Alter Bridge and Limp Bizkit, <em>The End<\/em>\u00a0is often as direct and rigorous.\u00a0At times, the\u00a0effect is a nagging sameness that\u00a0erases detail; it&#8217;s Van Halen&#8217;s\u00a0growing talent as a songwriter that\u00a0elevates the best songs here, &#8220;One of a Kind,&#8221; &#8220;The Spell,&#8221; &#8220;All in Good Time&#8221; and the title track.<\/p>\n<p>To his credit, Van Halen has no\u00a0towering pretensions for Mammoth. Much like his dad&#8217;s band at the beginning of their career, the goal here is immediate rock &#8216;n&#8217; roll, and on that most basic level, <em>The End<\/em> succeeds.
