She retrieves herbs and white flower petals, putting them into a wooden bowl that she holds up to the evening sky. As the ingredients magically rise and fly towards the full moon, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/stevie-nicks\/\" id=\"auto-tag_stevie-nicks\" data-tag=\"stevie-nicks\">Stevie Nicks<\/a>\u2019 \u201cCrystal\u201d begins to play, the hypnotic violin swirling through the darkness.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tBy the time <em>Practical Magic<\/em> hit theaters in October 1998, \u201cCrystal\u201d was 25 years old, and had lived more lives than most witches. It\u2019s been recorded three separate times: in 1973, with Nicks\u2019 then-boyfriend <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/lindsey-buckingham\/\" id=\"auto-tag_lindsey-buckingham\" data-tag=\"lindsey-buckingham\">Lindsey Buckingham<\/a>, on their joint album <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-album-reviews\/buckingham-nicks-review-1235429410\/\"><em>Buckingham Nicks<\/em><\/a>; a second time in 1975, with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/fleetwood-mac\/\" id=\"auto-tag_fleetwood-mac\" data-tag=\"fleetwood-mac\">Fleetwood Mac<\/a>, after the couple joined the band; and then a third time by Nicks herself, for <em>Practical Magic<\/em>. Why are we still talking about this song and its many iterations, all these years later? Well, because we\u2019re still having crystal visions. Last month, <em>Buckingham Nicks <\/em>was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/lindsey-stevie-buckingham-nicks-reissue-1235391209\/\">reissued<\/a> after being out of print for decades, giving us a renewed appreciation for the record that was essentially their ticket into Fleetwood Mac \u2014 and the delicate but incredibly powerful ballad inside it. \u201cCrystal\u201d isn\u2019t a world-famous, viral-moment-generating Nicks hit like \u201cDreams,\u201d but it\u2019s the gold thread that weaves together the entire history of Stevie and Lindsey, with each recording representing a different era of their relationship toward one another. That history is full of <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-lists\/lindsey-buckingham-stevie-nicks-relationship-quotes-1235393526\/\">ups and downs<\/a>, but \u201cCrystal\u201d has always been there. The crystalline knowledge runs deep.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cCrystal\u201d is a classic Stevie gem, a song about listening to your intuition (\u201cDo you always trust your first initial feeling?\u201d) across a mystical, Tolkien-esque backdrop of nature. We hear about the sea, clear water fountains, and \u2014 her favorite \u2014 mountains. (Stevie loves to sing about mountains. The fact that <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/the-section-knights-of-soft-rock-233728\/\">legendary session players<\/a> like guitarist Waddy Wachtel and drummer Jim Keltner play on it only makes it that much more California. It opens with a twinkly guitar and gently builds on the chorus, as Nicks lends some sunny harmonies.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cCrystal\u201d is one of the <em>Buckingham Nicks<\/em> tracks that producer Keith Olsen played for Mick Fleetwood, when he was essentially auditioning to produce Fleetwood Mac\u2019s next album. Not only did Olsen get the job, but so did Buckingham and Nicks, who joined the band in December 1974. For 1975\u2019s <em>Fleetwood Mac<\/em>, the couple brought the band several songs, including \u201cLandslide,\u201d \u201cMonday Morning,\u201d and \u201cRhiannon.\u201d Another contribution was \u201cCrystal,\u201d which they reprised for the album. This version of the song is more polished, glowing in a mid-Seventies pop sheen, while Buckingham\u2019s vocals are quieter. Fleetwood Mac only performed \u201cCrystal\u201d in 1975 and 1976, and there\u2019s no known record of Nicks ever performing it solo. But for those who really know these two musicians\u2019 story, \u201cCrystal\u201d is the ultimate Stevie-Lindsey song \u2014 the one that represents their history throughout the decades while capturing why they first fell in love, before the darkness took over.
