But a few months ago, different types of verse began flowing out of her. \u201cI saw two masked men grab a boy, and [wrote] something about beating him up and letting him fall through the cracks onto a dungeon,\u201d she says. \u201cIt was a tough one. But that\u2019s how it started; that was the first one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tFrom that point on, Baez, long a leading voice in the worlds of <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-features\/joan-baez-interview-trump-protests-dylan-a-complete-unknown-1235359143\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-features\/joan-baez-interview-trump-protests-dylan-a-complete-unknown-1235359143\/\">folk music and activism<\/a>, has continued delving into topical poetry. Alternating between sarcastic putdowns and solemn expression, the works play off issues in the news, be they ICE raids or our current head of Homeland Security. \u201cLittle Green Worm,\u201d printed below, is a pointed retort to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/donald-trump\/\" id=\"auto-tag_donald-trump\" data-tag=\"donald-trump\">Donald Trump<\/a>. \u201cWhen I\u2019m present and looking out at my own yard and the trees and all of that, it\u2019s still as beautiful as it ever was,\u201d she says. \u201cAnd then there are times of great sorrow and times of frustration, like everybody. And I found that the poetry helps \u2014 just doing it and getting it down on paper or on computer to keep my head above water.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tAt the moment, Baez isn\u2019t sure if she\u2019ll gather her growing collection of topical verse into a book, and she doesn\u2019t see them transforming into songs, either, especially given some of their irregular structures. \u201cI spoke with other songwriters because I thought, \u2018Why isn\u2019t this working?\u2019\u201d she says of an early attempt. \u201cAnd they said, from their experience, it doesn\u2019t work trying to put poetry to music.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tAs another type of relief, Baez is currently appearing two days a week as part of the Soiled Dove, an old-fashioned circus experience in Alameda, California, where she dances and sings two songs in character. \u201cIt\u2019s wild and crazy and exhausting,\u201d she says. \u201cBut I\u2019ve always wanted to dance onstage, and it never kind of worked out. So I\u2019m working all that out now, dancing and singing and all of it, me in a blonde wig. One has to start making good trouble. They say, \u2018What can I do?\u2019 You say, \u2018Go volunteer for [something],\u2019 and they say, \u2018Oh.\u2019\u00a0 I just say that we may not be able to turn the tide yet, but we can you are so comfortable<br \/>hiring people whose minds have<br \/>been by hollowed out by worms,<br \/>I\u2019ve been thinking about<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\ta little green worm that has<br \/>worked its way into<br \/>your anterior insular cortex,<br \/>the part of the brain<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\twhere empathy originates.<br \/>Empathy is the ability to understand,<br \/>feel, and share the emotions of<br \/>another person.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tIt is like a muscle,<br \/>which is to say:<br \/>you can develop it with practice.<br \/>The little green worm quickly devoured yours.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tHe then munched onward<br \/>until he came to<br \/>the prefrontal cortex,<br \/>which is involved in<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\timpulse control<br \/>and regulating social behavior.<br \/>It\u2019s meant to stop us from blurting out<br \/>vulgarities such as<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cGrab her by the pussy\u201d and<br \/>\u201cShithole countries\u201d or accusing all<br \/>Mexican immigrants of being criminals,<br \/>rapists, and drug dealers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tThere is one of your outbursts however,<br \/>which remains both<br \/>unfiltered and true:<br \/>\u201cI could stand in the middle of 5th Avenue<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/
