{"id":50240,"date":"2025-10-28T12:32:58","date_gmt":"2025-10-28T12:32:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/musicianvoice.com\/index.php\/2025\/10\/28\/through-the-open-window-review\/"},"modified":"2025-10-28T12:32:58","modified_gmt":"2025-10-28T12:32:58","slug":"through-the-open-window-review","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/musicianvoice.com\/index.php\/2025\/10\/28\/through-the-open-window-review\/","title":{"rendered":"Through the Open Window&#8217;: Review"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>It was only a matter of time before\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ultimateclassicrock.com\/tags\/bob-dylan\/\" target=\"_blank\">Bob Dylan<\/a>&#8216;s long-running <em>Bootleg Series<\/em> would get around to covering the earliest part of his career.<\/p>\n<p>With other specific Dylan eras \u2014 Rolling Thunder, the gospel years, the <a href=\"https:\/\/ultimateclassicrock.com\/bob-dylan-cutting-edge-review\/\" target=\"_blank\">mid-&#8217;60s masterpieces<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/ultimateclassicrock.com\/bob-dylan-fragments-time-out-of-mind-sessions-bootleg-series-review\/\" target=\"_blank\">&#8217;90s comeback<\/a>,\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/ultimateclassicrock.com\/bob-dylan-basement-tapes-complete\/\" target=\"_blank\">The Basement Tapes<\/a><\/em>, even the disparaged\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/ultimateclassicrock.com\/bob-dylan-another-self-portrait\/\" target=\"_blank\">Self Portrait<\/a><\/em>\u00a0from 1970 \u2014 picked over in fine detail since 1991, his first several years as a performer and recording artist were among the few periods that hadn&#8217;t been put under the microscope.<\/p>\n<p>Plus, with the Oscar-nominated <a href=\"https:\/\/ultimateclassicrock.com\/a-complete-unknown-review-another-side-of-bob-dylan\/\" target=\"_blank\"><em>A Complete Unknown<\/em><\/a> biopic still relatively fresh in the public&#8217;s mind, the timing couldn&#8217;t be better for\u00a0<em>Bootleg Series Volume 18: Through the Open Window, 1956-1963<\/em>, an eight-disc appraisal of Dylan&#8217;s formative years, from a 1956 private recording at a St. Paul, Minnesota, music shop to his celebrated October 1963 concert at Carnegie Hall.<\/p>\n<p><strong>READ MORE:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/ultimateclassicrock.com\/bob-dylan-albums-ranked\/\" target=\"_blank\">Bob Dylan Albums Ranked<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0trajectory of Dylan&#8217;s evolution from a traditional folk singer covering others&#8217; songs to a singer-songwriter with original material can be traced throughout the eight discs. The first CD features his solo acoustic renditions of the traditional songs &#8220;K.C. Moan&#8221; and &#8220;Remember Me,&#8221; Woody Guthrie&#8217;s &#8220;Jesus Christ,&#8221; and Shirley and Lee&#8217;s early rock &#8216;n&#8217; roll hit &#8220;Let the Good Times Roll.&#8221;\u00a0By the final disc, he&#8217;s performing the self-penned &#8220;Only a Pawn in Their Game&#8221; and &#8220;When the Ship Comes In&#8221; to a raptured audience.<\/p>\n<p>In between,\u00a0<em>Through the Open Window <\/em>tells the story of\u00a0how Robert Zimmerman from Duluth, Minnesota, became Bob Dylan, the voice of a generation. It&#8217;s told through home recordings, club performances, outtakes from his first three albums, radio appearances and the complete 1963 Carnegie Hall concert. Over the 139 tracks, four dozen previously unreleased,\u00a0Dylan begins to find his voice and, more importantly, his identity.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\">Eight\u00a0selections from the famous &#8220;party tape&#8221; recorded in December 1961 at a friend&#8217;s apartment in Minneapolis, just weeks after he finished the sessions for his\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ultimateclassicrock.com\/bob-dylan-debut-album-turns-50-years-old\/\" target=\"_blank\">debut album<\/a>,\u00a0released the following March,\u00a0draws a line before Dylan begins to reveal the lifelong restlessness that would\u00a0define his career; by mid-1962, he&#8217;d start recording his second album, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/ultimateclassicrock.com\/the-freewheelin-bob-dylan\/\" target=\"_blank\">The Freewheelin&#8217; Bob Dylan<\/a><\/em>, the first to include mostly all original songs. From there,\u00a0<\/span><em>Through the Open Window<\/em>&#8216;s<em>\u00a0<\/em>remaining CDs\u00a0begin to fill in the pieces\u00a0leading to the transitional period\u00a0covered in 2015&#8217;s\u00a0<em>The Cutting Edge: 1965-1966: The Bootleg Series Vol. 12<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>An early live version of &#8220;Don&#8217;t Think Twice, It&#8217;s All Right&#8221;; social message songs from the period like &#8220;John Brown,&#8221; a rarity released under the pseudonym Blind Boy Grunt;\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/ultimateclassicrock.com\/bob-dylan-times-they-are-a-changin-album\/\" target=\"_blank\">The Times They Are A-Changin&#8217;<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>outtake &#8220;Seven Curses&#8221;; and stirring takes on &#8220;Who Killed Davey Moore?&#8221; and &#8220;A Hard Rain\u2019s A-Gonna Fall&#8221; from Carnegie Hall\u00a0are all part of the journey. So are the oft-repeated but false stories of Dylan&#8217;s carnival past, the protest songs\u00a0he&#8217;d later distance himself from and a multitude of live performances that were a large part of his early narrative. <em>Through the Open Window\u00a0<\/em>isn&#8217;t as revealing as\u00a0other past <em>Bootleg Series<\/em> volumes; there&#8217;s no revision to be worked through, either, as was the case with some. Its point and purpose are pretty clear-cut: Like any great artist, Dylan got his start somewhere.
