Ironically, White \u2014 the country-funk singer and guitarist known as the \u201cSwamp Fox\u201d \u2014 had yet to appear on the Opry. That honor would come about four years later when he made his Opry debut on the same day he released <em>Bad Mouthin\u2019,<\/em> his album of country blues.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t<em>Bad Mouthin\u2019 <\/em>would be White\u2019s final album, and the Opry performance would be his last live show. He <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-country\/tony-joe-white-dead-obituary-747393\/\">died<\/a> less than a month later, on Oct. 24, at 75.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tToday, White remains revered by a select group of music fans in the know, but it\u2019s a segment that the singer\u2019s son, Jody White, is determined to grow. This month, Jody oversaw a rerelease of <em>The Real Thang<\/em>, his dad\u2019s 1980 album that featured songs like \u201cGood-bye L.A.\u201d and \u201cCowboy Singer.\u201d And there\u2019s more on the way.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cEverything that we put out is just another chapter of me spending more time understanding who he was during a certain period of life,\u201d Jody White tells <em>Rolling Stone<\/em>. \u201cWhen we worked together, he was like, \u2018Jody, [music] is the most freedom I have ever had in my life. I know I can just make music and you\u2019ll take care of the rest.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tEven if <em>The Real Thang<\/em> didn\u2019t land as an immediate hit upon its initial release, the album has become a cult classic of sound and scope \u2014 all of it powered by White\u2019s notoriously gravelly rasp, his unique approach to the guitar, and plainspoken songwriting.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cHe had so much soul, emotion, and feeling,\u201d Jody says. \u201cHe was able to put that into words in a way that nobody else could.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"TONY JOE WHITE - &quot;Cowboy Singer&quot; (Lyric Video)\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/SojSuICkPYs?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tTake, for example, \u201cRainy Night in Georgia,\u201d the 1970 hit by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-features\/charley-pride-sings-brook-benton-endlessly-1235449864\/\">Brook Benton<\/a> that White wrote and later recorded. White\u2019s performance of the song on <em>Austin City Limits<\/em> in 1980, which was eventually released as the album <em>Live in Austin, TX,<\/em> is a ramshackle revelation.<\/p>\n<section class=\"brands-most-popular \/\/ editors-pick-module lrv-u-margin-tb-2 lrv-u-border-a-2 u-box-shadow-5-5 lrv-u-padding-lr-1 a-span1 u-padding-b-1@tablet u-overflow-hidden\">\n<h2 id=\"section-heading\" class=\"c-heading larva  lrv-u-text-align-center u-border-color-black a-font-theme-primary-xxs lrv-u-color-black lrv-u-text-transform-uppercase u-letter-spacing-0063 lrv-u-padding-t-050 u-padding-b-0375@tablet lrv-u-padding-b-050@mobile-max lrv-u-border-b-2\">\n<p>\t\tEditor\u2019s picks<\/p>\n<\/h2>\n<\/section>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cIt was perhaps the most unhinged performance in the history of <em>Austin City Limits<\/em>,\u201d Jody recalls with laughter. \u201cMost artists [on that show] bring full bands, horns and backup singers. Tony Joe shows up with a three-piece and just wings the whole thing. It\u2019s nuts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tWatching White\u2019s full <em>Austin City Limits <\/em>appearance also reveals just how talented of a guitar player he was. Even Mark Knopfler of Dire Straits was a fan, according to Jody White. \u201cMost of his shows were just him and a drummer,\u201d Jody says. \u201c[Other guitarists] are like, \u2018Do you see the way he\u2019s playing? That\u2019s so unorthodox,\u2019 because he\u2019s carrying the bass with his thumb on the low E-string and playing the other strings simultaneously.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tLike his friend Waylon Jennings, White, raised on a cotton farm in Louisiana, made music his own way. Together they forged a decades-long friendship built on mutual stubbornness, authenticity, and a keen sense of songwriting. Jody remembers various visits to Jennings\u2019 house with his dad to watch Dallas Cowboys games or gather at the table for Thanksgiving. Jennings, whose own son Shooter Jennings just released a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/\" rel=\"\">new Waylon album<\/a>, <em>Songbird<\/em>, appears on a handful of selections on <em>The Real Thang<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cThey were both cut from the same mold,\u201d Jody says. \u201cEven though my dad wasn\u2019t an \u2018outlaw\u2019 in the sense that Waylon was, in the way [Tony Joe] approached life, business, and everything he did with music, he was an outlaw. The roles were famously reversed in 1970 when Presley incorporated White\u2019s \u201cPolk Salad Annie\u201d as a staple of his live shows during Presley\u2019s jumpsuit era.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cWhen Elvis recorded his song and flew him to Vegas, that was one of the most surreal moments of my dad\u2019s life,\u201d Jody says. \u201cThat was his hero.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tBut even with Presley pushing his songs and music labels wanting to work with him, White was turned off by the idea of self-promotion. Jody applauds his father\u2019s fierce independence, even if it hindered his broader success. \u201cHe was just doing what he was doing because that\u2019s who he was,\u201d he says. \u201cNot because he was trying to prove anything or accomplish anything or become more famous or win some award or sell a certain number of records. He just didn\u2019t even know or care about any of that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tIn his final years, White was still actively recording and touring, albeit at his own pace and rhythm. According to Jody, when he opened his father\u2019s storage unit after his death, he found boxes and boxes of tapes, stretching from 1965 to 2018. Listening to the earlier recordings, Jody was stunned by how high White\u2019s voice was and learned from his mother that White\u2019s baritone only emerged after his dad had his tonsils removed.
