\n\tBillie Eilish<\/a>\u2018s fragile, love-soaked song, \u201cBirds of a Feather,\u201d almost didn\u2019t take flight. In a new interview, the singer revealed that she nearly tossed out the single from her Hit Me Hard and Soft<\/a><\/em> track list after considering it to be \u201ckind of stupid.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tWhen speaking to the Wall Street Journal<\/a><\/em>, Eilish shared that she and Finneas, her brother and frequent collaborator, had difficulty landing the chorus \u2014 particularly when delivering the line, \u201cI\u2019ll love you till the day that I die.\u201d After wrapping the track, which stands out among her more moody offerings, Eilish still wasn\u2019t completely behind it.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cMultiple times I was like, \u2018We should cut this,\u2019\u201d Eilish told WSJ<\/em>. \u201cEven when I played the whole album for the label, I was like, \u2018Guys, this one is kind of stupid.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tDespite her initial hesitation, \u201cBirds of a Feather\u201d would feature on her third studio album and become one of the most inescapable hits of the summer. The single reached Number Two on the\u00a0Billboard 200 and topped the\u00a0Billboard Global 200 for three weeks. Spotify also declared the track to be its most-streamed song of 2024 and the track garnered Grammy nominations for Song of the Year, Record of the Year, and Best Pop Solo Performance.<\/p>\n

\n\tElsewhere in the interview, Eilish discussed the music industry\u2019s initial doubt that her introspective, more somber (and at times devastating<\/a>) songs wouldn\u2019t appeal to a wide audience. \u201cIt\u2019s so funny to think back on all of the criticisms that were like, \u2018The songs are too sad,\u2019\u201d she said, adding then when penning \u201cBirds of a Feather,\u201d she slipped in \u201csomething dark\u201d so it wasn\u2019t solely \u201crainbows and smiles.\u201d The musician added, \u201cWe wrote about the idea that you\u2019re going to die soon, and let\u2019s make it last.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
