No call that early is good news. I braced myself. I knew \u2026 but I didn\u2019t know.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tSigh. But I <em>knew<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tI had one propitious foot in the fight beside D\u2019Angelo, another irresolute one in the \u201cmaybe it\u2019s time for him to go home, Ahmir\u201d shoe. D himself told me in our last convo at Sloan Kettering, \u201cI\u2019m hanging on, brotha \u2026 but today was hard \u2026 y\u2019know?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tI know, man \u2026 I know.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tTruthfully, I wasn\u2019t ready for that gut punch. I\u2019d been bracing for it for some 25 years \u2014 since the deluge of <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-lists\/best-albums-of-all-time-1062063\/the-beatles-white-album-1063204\/\">Voodoo<\/a><\/em> in 2000. I always had a looming feeling concerning D like a \u201cany moment now I will get \u2018the call\u2019\u201c feeling. Most of our mavericks who fly that close to the sun never get to see that journey through. And now here we are at 5:30 a.m.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tI had seconds to decide: How do I process this new reality? My preference was not to start my Tuesday morning \u2026 mourning.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tTear ducts filling, I searched for a happy distraction to slow this grand-piano-speeding-down-a-San-Francisco-hill feeling in my stomach. I wanted one bright memory. One. And just then it hit me.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tIt\u2019s May 1997.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tWe\u2019re taking a dinner break in month eight of our (unknown then) four-year sentence at the Electric Lady Soul Prison while making <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/voodoo\/\" id=\"auto-tag_voodoo\" data-tag=\"voodoo\">Voodoo<\/a><\/em>. Michael Jackson has just released <em>Blood on the Dance Floor<\/em>. Not exactly a must-experience event, but MJ always deserved at least a two-minute song gander \u2026 right?<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tEnter \u201cMorphine.\u201d Or better yet, enter our collective shock at \u201cMorphine\u201d\u2019s bridge. Nine Inch Nails chaos one second, then that coda drops and \u2014 well \u2014 go ahead and cue the <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/hwihNQCTDIU?t=157\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">song up at 2:37<\/a> and imagine being in our studio hearing this for the first time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tYou know that meme of brothers at an outdoor table laughing so hard they cling to each other before collapsing to the floor? That was us. We laughed so hard at that over-the-top delivery I sent a studio assistant to get Advil. We mocked it so lovingly it ironically became one of my last favorite MJ moments on wax.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tSpeaking of laughing until injury: Our fellow Soulquarian James Poyser once reminded me that next to Busta Rhymes, no one shattered bones giving a double-snap salute like D. I sometimes skipped greeting him just to keep my drumming hand intact. Pain is love, but come on.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tD\u2019Angelo, to me, was one of the last pure artists in Black music. I know we sold the mysterious seriousness well, but the truth is \u2014 we were a silly bunch.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tI admit I might\u2019ve earned an extra couple of years of friendship if not for \u2026 OK. What had happened was: Three days after Christmas of \u201993, the Roots were mixing our major-label debut. Engineer Bob Power kept raving about some \u201cMike\u201d who was the second coming of Marvin Gaye, Al Green, and Frankie Beverly. \u201cYeah, yeah, heard it all before.\u201d In my mind, no one could come close to how Prince held us hostage 10 years prior. Nor will they ever. So this was already a hard sell.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tThen \u201cMike\u201d walked in. Game over. His Timberland chukkas gangsta-leaned like the \u201cSmooth Criminal\u201d video. No way THIS guy was the future in those dusty-ass Timbs. I gave him a pound and retreated to the break room to exploit the free long-distance phone. (Consistency check: A year later I\u2019d initially dismiss J Dilla the same way. Snoop snaps, \u201cY\u2019all don\u2019t love us?!?!?!\u201d I sensed a powder keg and bolted like Tom Cruise in <em>War of the Worlds<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tOutside MSG I ran into street promoters. A kid sized me up: \u201cYou\u2019re gonna love this.\u201d He handed me a sampler cassette. To be polite, I pocketed it. Normally I\u2019d never listen to those \u201ctell me what you think\u201d tapes. But that night, processing chaos in the hotel, I noticed a name on my nightstand: Bob Power. Wait \u2014 what\u2019s a D\u2019Angelo? <em>Brown Sugar<\/em>? I put it in my Walkman. By second 12, I was all in. The music was confident, controlled \u2014 30 years of soul (and the next 30) in one breath \u2026<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u2026 then a slow-motion realization hit like that Ralphie line in <em>A Christmas Story<\/em>: \u201cOhhhh fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuudge \u2014 this is Mike!! the Timberland-shoe guy!\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tD\u2019OH!!!!!<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tRewind to April 1, 1984: Marvin Gaye dies, shot by his father. For both D and me, that day carried reverence and darkness. We shared complicated fathers, marked by love and \u2026 the other side of love. We both turned that tragedy into nightmares of our own complicated relationships with our own dads. My dad used Marvin\u2019s death as a subtle sermon: Respect is real, and disrespect has \u2026 consequences. Our first real day talking, and one framed by Marvin in every way. The Roots were on tour with the Fugees and Goodie Mob, and I met up with D at the House of Blues in L.A. during Soul Train Awards weekend. One of the first things D told me was he\u2019d just recorded a version of \u201cYour Precious Love\u201d with a singer he just met named Erykah Badu, whom we also met that weekend (three generals in the same army all meeting at the same time \u2026 no big deal). Later on he confessed to me that the intro to \u201cI Heard It Through the Grapevine\u201d haunted him \u2014 it genuinely scared him. My version of that fear is the modulated coda in Curtis Mayfield\u2019s \u201cFreddie\u2019s Dead,\u201d which I first heard during a childhood injury.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tOf course, I had to test him \u2014 one day not long after I popped the CD in just to see what would happen and turned the volume up.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tD wasn\u2019t lying. It froze him. I might\u2019ve made it an ongoing prank, but after attempt two? I knew a third would mean hands thrown.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tWe never discussed \u201cGrapevine\u201d again.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tEver.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tNow cut to a year later \u2014 April 1, 1997. After a rough split with management, D\u2019s career was in flux. D\u2019s former manager had a demo of a song called \u201cBitch.\u201d It wasn\u2019t ready, but it pointed toward what <em>Voodoo<\/em> would become \u2014 beautifully nasty. An artist that the aforementioned manager had signed (let\u2019s call them \u201cRedacted\u201d) came across a tape of \u201cBitch\u201d and later released something \u2026 lightly derivative.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tMan, that got under D\u2019s skin! To me? Pssshh!!! Yet ANOTHER chance to prank him (I don\u2019t learn).<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tThe Roots were mixing <em>Illadelph Halflife <\/em>with Bob Power at Battery in Midtown Manhattan, and the Soulquarians (Common, Erykah, D, etc.) were working on various projects across town in the Village at Electric Lady. I called Rahzel, our human beatbox, and told him to impersonate (\u201cRedacted\u201d) and confront D over the phone: \u201cYou bit my style!!!!!\u201d I stayed close to D to hear it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tMost folks would\u2019ve gone fisticuffs ON SIGHT!!!! D did get heated \u2014 but in the nerdiest, most D\u2019Angelo way possible.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cMan,\u201d he said, \u201cyou so phony! Chords suck. You don\u2019t know how to stack vocals!!!!! Your vibrato is ass! Lyrics whack! BRING IT! I will battle you ANY STAGE ANY TIME, n***a!\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u00a0\u2026 Wait \u2014 wha?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tNot the reaction I expected. D\u2019Angelo went \u2026 <em>technical<\/em>? That\u2019s when I realized I was stuck with a quote-unquote \u201cartiste\u201d \u2014 someone who couldn\u2019t not think about music. I mean who else critiques chord structure mid-beef? Guess I was the one fooled.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tThat was D at his most intense.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tDuring the <em>Voodoo<\/em> sessions he once called at 4 a.m. \u201cYo man, we gotta talk.\u201d Was this a confrontation? What kept him up? The idea that Common had a funkier track for his <em>Like Water for Chocolate <\/em>LP (which D\u2019Angelo and I both were working on at the time) than D\u2019Angelo had for <em>Voodoo<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cThat\u2019s my funk!!!!!!!!!! He don\u2019t know what to do with that funk!!\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tI called Common and suggested a swap. He was chill. \u201cChicken Grease\u201d went to <em>Voodoo<\/em>; \u201cGeto Heaven Pt. 2\u201d (originally D &amp; Lauryn Hill) went to Common.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tThen came <em>Voodoo<\/em>. Then came everything. That album remade Black music. There\u2019s a before and an after. Its tour was the greatest soul revue since prime Prince \u2014 we spent four years studying him; naturally, we wrote our love letter back.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tBut D\u2019s core never changed. One day on tour \u2014 in a nondescript spot like Milwaukee \u2014 Halle Berry happened to be side-stage during soundcheck. I couldn\u2019t see her behind my cymbal, but D could. Suddenly soundcheck turns into full-throttle, balls-to-the-wall performance with no warning. Why are we doing a full-fledged, life-depends-on-it 18-minute version of \u201cDevil\u2019s Pie\u201d?! Dude, save it for the show! Mic tricks, dips, splits, slides, the whole thing. On one slide, a nail tore his faux-leather pants from thigh to ankle. Pants became skirt. Fourteen years between <em>Voodoo<\/em> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/second-coming-of-dangelo-49555\/\"><em>Black Messiah<\/em> <\/a>\u2014 a lifetime. When I came in for the latter, every piece of <em>Voodoo<\/em> gear was still there intact as if we\u2019d never left. \u201cGuys,\u201d I said, \u201cwhy are we using VHS tapes and floppy disks and CDs from \u201997? The world moved on.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tNot in his mind.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cWe\u2019re going straight vintage,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tI didn\u2019t get it \u2014 but one man\u2019s comedy is another\u2019s heart-on-sleeve pursuit of perfection.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tHe was slated to headline the Roots Picnic this summer. We rehearsed two weeks out. He was famously secretive, but something felt different.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tThe first clue: Rehearsals started late. Nothing new in his world, but this was ridiculous. I scheduled 10 p.m., but the first note hit at 3 a.m. By seven, I had to leave for the airport. He looked wounded. \u201cWhere you going? We only did a few hours.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tIn retrospect, I see his clock was health-shifted. He struggled to hold his guitar, preferring to sit at keys. I thought it was an aesthetic choice \u2014 a throwback \u201995 vibe. I didn\u2019t realize the medical truth unfolding. When asked, he said he\u2019d been through something but was on the mend.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tEven so, that last rehearsal felt \u2026 final. I started thinking to myself, \u201cWhy do I feel like this is the last time I\u2019m gonna play this song with him?\u201d I tried to ignore it, but \u2014 then the unspeakable happened. Hard to explain, maybe hindsight talking, but he didn\u2019t fight me on the ONE thing he always fought me on.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tThe most radical act for D was to play the album versions live. To him it felt lazy. In 25 years, we did \u201cthe normal versions\u201d just once. For the Picnic, I suggested: Let\u2019s just do straight-no-chaser <em>Brown Sugar <\/em>cuts. Simpler, freer, less stage business. It was so easy I almost argued against my own idea.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tHe agreed immediately.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tToo quickly.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tI have to say, the last weeks with him were probably the best for our friendship. Music was always the template for our communication. Now here we were in the hospital \u2014 no soundproof separation booths, no drums, no keys, no instruments, no musicians. Nothing but just the two of us talking. About where our lives had been in the past five years or so. I\u2019ll admit that the uncertain finality of it all was somewhat awkward for me. Is this visit gonna be my last visit? Is this concert gonna be the last one we watch together? Will this be the last J Dilla beat we lose our minds over? Man \u2026 since that day back in 1996, talking about our hometowns and high school and our churches and our fathers and how we escaped it all, we hadn\u2019t talked all that deep.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tI mean, don\u2019t get me wrong \u2014 for 30 years we were having a different type of conversation. But it was a conversation we let the world in on. A new language, a new sound, a new vibration.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tI had a fear of giving him a 30-years-overdue update on where I was in life since we first met.
