The crowd included some of her earliest champions and self-declared Ad\u00e9la stans: <a data-id=\"rollingstone.com\/t\/troye-sivan\" data-type=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/rollingstone.com\/t\/troye-sivan\">Troye Sivan<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/rachel-sennott\/\">Rachel Sennott<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/demi-lovato\/\">Demi Lovato<\/a>, who just days later would announce Ad\u00e9la as the opener for her<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/demi-lovato-its-not-that-deep-tour-1235454732\/\"> 2026 arena tour.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cAd\u00e9la is pop perfection, not only is she an incredible dancer, but she has the vocals and songwriting to match,\u201d Lovato tells <em>Rolling Ston<\/em>e. \u201cShe has such an edge and unique vibe that makes her so special.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tIt\u2019s been a whirlwind year for the 21-year-old rising star, who first caught the world\u2019s attention last year on<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/netflix-pop-star-academy-katseye-trailer-1235074049\/\"> <em>Pop Star Academy<\/em>, <\/a>the Netflix competition series chronicling the formation of the girl group that became Katseye. Back then, Ad\u00e9la stood out as one of the show\u2019s strongest dancers and a big-sister figure to her fellow contestants. To the shock of many fans, she was one of the first to be eliminated on the show. Now, she calls it a blessing in disguise,\u00a0one that set her on the path to launching her career.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cI just have never imagined myself doing anything else <em>but<\/em> this,\u201d Ad\u00e9la tells me. \u201cEven being at the shows \u2014 I don\u2019t know how to communicate this without sounding insane, but I\u2019ve visualized it so many times that when I actually got up onstage before my first show, I was not nervous. She arrives with her pink hair flowing over her leather jacket, and her glistening bleached brows peeking over some sunglasses. We know about the lube. We know about the butt plugs, the sex toys, the Trojans.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tThroughout the interview, Ad\u00e9la\u2019s eyes gleam as she talks about other pop artists. It\u2019s clear she\u2019s studied them closely, and they\u2019ve inspired her artistic output. I was like, \u2018Oh, I\u2019m doing that,\u2019\u201d she says. As a kid, she watched the dubbed version of the show in Slovak, and had no clue that Miley Cyrus\u2019 character was meant to be American. Once her older brother broke the news, her gears started to turn: \u201c\u2018How am I going to be on Disney Channel? How am I going to do this?\u2019\u201d she remembers. \u201cSo I started learning English from watching interviews of Demi, Miley, and acting like I\u2019m being interviewed on <em>Ellen<\/em>, in my room, just talking to myself, to the walls. Instead, she dove deep into ballet, the sort of high-brow art form her father encouraged her to pursue and a more common artistic pathway for girls like her in Eastern Europe. She was so good at ballet that she moved out of her home at 14 to pursue it professionally, living on her own in Vienna and London. \u201cI was like, OK, this is the way to get onstage,\u201d she says. \u201cBallet is really great, because it\u2019s very objective. Hard work makes you good, and being good gets you the big roles. So it\u2019s very linear and it motivates you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tBut music \u2014 and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-features\/hannah-montana-pop-music-generation-sabrina-carpenter-chappell-roan-1235051502\/\"><em>Hannah Montana <\/em>stardom<\/a> \u2014 was always the goal. Ultimately, Ad\u00e9la moved to the United States to compete on <em>Pop Star Academy<\/em> as part of Hybe and Geffen Records\u2019 search for a global girl group. Despite being a favorite among her fellow contestants, she was eliminated from the group\u2019s running early on. \u201cWe had no control over our own image, and I realized through that process \u2014 which is such a valuable lesson \u2014 that I\u2019m not really good at being told what to do,\u201d she says. \u201cSome people are really good at that. (It was 2023.) \u201cI had to be kicked off the show, bawl my eyes out for a little bit, and live in a shitty apartment. Those are the things I had to go through to fight for what I wanted to do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tAfter getting booted off of <em>Dream Academy<\/em>, Ad\u00e9la chose to stay in L.A. She got her GED while living in the attic of her vocal coach, Dave Stratton, and was taking writing sessions with anyone who\u2019d allow her to join. \u201cI was alone. I was deeply depressed. I was deeply confused,\u201d she says. \u201cI had no fucking idea what I was doing at all. And I knew no one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tAt the time, she was even making indie rock music. \u201cIt was really, really bad,\u201d she says with a laugh. \u201cIt was because I came off the show and I was like, \u2018Fuck pop.\u2019 I was emo. And then as the months went on, I was like, \u2018What am I doing?\u2019 I love pop music. That\u2019s all I\u2019ve ever listened to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tThe return to pop quickly paid off. She started to work with Liam Benayon, a prot\u00e9g\u00e9 of songwriting legend Bonnie McKee, to craft her first few songs. Together they released \u201cHomewrecked,\u201d a gritty electro-pop song about an infidelity she concocted in her head.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cWhen I met Ad\u00e9la, I immediately noticed her intrinsic, perfect pop instincts. We were both just obsessed with pop music \u2014 I taught her about Madonna, she taught me about Beyonc\u00e9. We shared this deep infatuation with pop music,\u201d Benayon tells <em>Rolling Stone<\/em>. \u201cThe first thing that struck me were her melodies and song structures. The entire post-chorus on \u2018Homewrecked\u2019 was her \u2014 all in one take. My jaw was on the floor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tAfter \u201cHomewrecked\u201d came \u201cSuperscar,\u201d which earned her a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/adela-machine-girl-video-grimes-cameo-1235284342\/\">quick co-sign from Grimes,<\/a> who appeared in the music video for \u201cMachine Girl\u201d earlier this year and declared Ad\u00e9la a \u201cfuture reigning popstar.\u201d Over the summer, Ad\u00e9la\u2019s video for \u201cSexOnTheBeat\u201d featured a cameo from Christina Aguilera. Add Demi Lovato and Troye Sivan to the equation, plus 100 gecs\u2019 Dylan Brady and Blake Slatkin as producers on her EP.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cFor a second, I was like, why is everybody cool getting behind me? I had an imposter syndrome moment,\u201d she says. \u201cI always knew I was cool. You have to know it about yourself, because how the fuck would anybody else see it if you don\u2019t know it? But then when other people start seeing it\u2019s like, whoa, now it\u2019s getting real. The cover art shows Ad\u00e9la urinating against a wall, seemingly mirroring photographer Sophy Rickett\u2019s 1990s <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/art-photography\/article\/68611\/1\/pissing-women-sophy-rickett-art-activism-provocative-london-exhibition-book\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/art-photography\/article\/68611\/1\/pissing-women-sophy-rickett-art-activism-provocative-london-exhibition-book\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Pissing Women<\/a><\/em> series. In the \u201cSexOnTheBeat\u201d video, she\u2019s heard pleasuring herself before breaking into floor choreography in front of a laptop and dancing nude. In some visuals, she\u2019s embraced the \u201cgirl group reject\u201d persona \u2014 even donning a two-piece that reads \u201cDoesn\u2019t Work Well in Groups.\u201d With her bright pink hair, pouty lips, bleached brows, and a fearless approach to nudity and sensuality, Ad\u00e9la leans fully into provocation as part of her identity. And it lands, even if it\u2019s polarizing to some.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cI\u2019ve been told that I\u2019m ugly a lot on the internet. People love to talk about my looks, and it\u2019s so interesting, because I genuinely find myself beautiful. I think I like looking a little off-putting,\u201d she says. \u201cI think I\u2019ve always pushed people\u2019s buttons. And not necessarily because I want to or I enjoy being like an edgelord or anything like that, but I think I\u2019m curious and I question a lot of things\u2026 And I think that is annoying to people and some people really like it. I was always super interested in that tension that my personality and my bluntness created.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tAd\u00e9la says she\u2019s bringing in some of that energy into the first few studio sessions that she\u2019s had as she works on her debut album. \u201cI\u2019m getting my own ducks in a row,\u201d she says. \u201cI need to write a manifesto to be like, \u2018This is what this is.\u2019 My EP was people realizing that Ad\u00e9la is a good performer and artist, but I don\u2019t think I\u2019ve had the chance to build a world yet. I really want to do that with the album.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tAd\u00e9la recently went to an <a data-id=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/addison-rae\/\" data-type=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/addison-rae\/\">Addison Rae<\/a> show and felt inspired by how clearly that new star was able to build a visual and musical world. \u201cThere\u2019s an outfit, there\u2019s a look, there\u2019s a world, there\u2019s an energy, there\u2019s a color,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tBy her side to help build that world is her creative director, Chris Horan \u2014 stylist to stars like Charli XCX, Aguilera, and Lovato \u2014 who first reached out to her over DM when she only had a song or two out. Horan and Ad\u00e9la created the <em>Provocateur<\/em> aesthetic of leotards, tapping into her ballet past and the avant-garde, almost alien-like looks that have accompanied her art and performances over the last year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cI am actually exactly where I needed to be my entire life. I love being onstage. That\u2019s where I feel truly myself,\u201d she says. \u201cThat\u2019s why I feel understood. Somehow I feel the most connected to me when I\u2019m performing for <em>you<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tFor the new era, she plans to step away from <em>The Provocateur<\/em>\u2019s \u201clet me fuck with people a little bit\u201d energy, she says, and instead deliver something that is more personal and where she can dissect herself in a way that translates to the music she enjoys creating. I\u2019m young, I\u2019m going to be singing and I want to be dancing,\u201d she says. \u201cAnd I want to be really honest.
