Calling himself a yogi and professing wellness expertise \u2014 he has been promoting his 2015 vegan cookbook on Instagram \u2014 the Def Jam Recordings co-founder posted an exuberant selfie with a group of apparent religious pilgrims earlier this year, with the caption: \u201cThe goal is self discovery when one knows the self she\/he makes life a moving prayer.\u2026 he should practice living in prayer \u2764\ufe0f and one day in this lifetime or the next all suffering stops\u2026\u201d This introspection has also served as a business opportunity: Simmons is a founder and investor in the Gdas Bali Health and Wellness Resort, \u201cthe destination for devotional and wellness practitioners,\u201d he wrote on Instagram.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tHis Instagram account is filled with dedications to his family, yoga mentors, and old-school rapper friends \u2014 \u201cIt has probably been at least one year since I missed 8 am meditation,\u201d he wrote in August \u2014 with Simmons noting recently that \u201cGovinda das Ananda (god\u2019s blissful servant) was the name given to me by krishna,\u201d and writing that one woman\u2019s introduction to yoga and meditation \u201cinspire[s] me to keep serving.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tHowever full the pioneering hip-hop mogul\u2019s island life might appear, his relocation came amid numerous sexual-misconduct allegations back in the United States. For more than a year, Simmons\u2019 continued residence in Bali dovetailed with allegations that he had yet to pay agreed-upon settlements to at least five women who have accused him of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/sexual-misconduct\/\" id=\"auto-tag_sexual-misconduct\" data-tag=\"sexual-misconduct\">sexual misconduct<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tWendy Franco, Sil Lai Abrams, and Sherri Abernathy said in court papers filed in October 2024 that for more than a year, Simmons hadn\u2019t paid 2023 agreements of more than $3 million total. Specifically, Simmons had agreed to pay Franco $515,000, and Abrams and Abernathy $1,265,000 each.<\/p>\n<section class=\"brands-most-popular \/\/ editors-pick-module lrv-u-margin-tb-2 lrv-u-border-a-2 u-box-shadow-5-5 lrv-u-padding-lr-1 a-span1 u-padding-b-1@tablet u-overflow-hidden\">\n<h2 id=\"section-heading\" class=\"c-heading larva  lrv-u-text-align-center u-border-color-black a-font-theme-primary-xxs lrv-u-color-black lrv-u-text-transform-uppercase u-letter-spacing-0063 lrv-u-padding-t-050 u-padding-b-0375@tablet lrv-u-padding-b-050@mobile-max lrv-u-border-b-2\">\n<p>\t\tEditor\u2019s picks<\/p>\n<\/h2>\n<\/section>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tAbernathy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/business\/hollywood\/la-fi-russell-simmons-yoga-20171213-htmlstory.html\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">alleged t<\/a>hat Simmons raped her in 1983, while Abrams<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-features\/russell-simmons-an-extra-host-nbc-news-a-sexual-assault-accusers-story-1123824\/\" target=\"_blank\"> claimed<\/a> Simmons raped her a decade later in 1994. Franco has not publicly made claims against Simmons, but according to settlement paperwork filed in court, the settlement relates to alleged \u201cphysical injuries and sickness.\u201d Documents filed in the legal proceedings also show that as of January 2025,, Simmons also owed a total of at least $8 million to three other accusers:<strong> <\/strong>Tina Klein-Baker, Toni Sallie, and Alexia Jones. These filings from earlier this year claimed that Simmons had paid only $220,000 total to them. (A firm spokesperson for Klein-Baker\u2019s lawyer, Kenya Davis of Boies Schiller Flexner, said that \u201cat this stage of litigation, the attorneys and clients could not comment.\u201d The attorney for Sallie and Jones declined to comment and declined to make them available for this article.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t<em>Rolling Stone<\/em> sent a detailed list of questions related to the allegations of abuse and nonpayment to multiple attorneys representing Simmons. Simmons, through one of his attorneys, Imran Ansari, declined to comment. Two days after <em>Rolling Stone <\/em>sent Simmons questions for this article, a lawyer for Franco, Abrams, and Abernathy told <em>Rolling Stone<\/em>, \u201cThe matter has been resolved,\u201d but declined to provide any additional details. This summer, he<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/music\/2025\/jun\/04\/russell-simmons-hbo-lawsuit-on-the-record\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\"> filed a defamation suit against HBO and<\/a> Amy Ziering and Kirby Dick<strong>, <\/strong>the filmmakers who produced <em>On the Record,<\/em> a 2020 documentary featuring interviews with several Simmons accusers. (Simmons\u2019 lawyer claimed \u201ccredible information, persuasive evidence, [and] witness statements\u201d supporting Simmons were \u201cdisregarded\u201d in the making of the film. HBO\u2019s parent company, Warner Bros. Discovery, said in a statement to <em>Rolling Stone <\/em>that the lawsuit \u201clacks both merit and substance\u201d and that they \u201cstand behind the documentary.\u201d The suit is ongoing.)\u00a0<\/p>\n<section class=\"brands-most-popular \/\/ recirculation-modules lrv-u-margin-tb-2 lrv-u-border-a-2 u-box-shadow-5-5 lrv-u-padding-lr-1 a-span1 u-padding-b-1@tablet u-overflow-hidden\">\n<h2 id=\"section-heading\" class=\"c-heading larva  lrv-u-text-align-center u-border-color-black a-font-theme-primary-xxs lrv-u-color-black lrv-u-text-transform-uppercase u-letter-spacing-0063 lrv-u-padding-t-050 u-padding-b-0375@tablet lrv-u-padding-b-050@mobile-max lrv-u-border-b-2\">\n<p>\t\tRelated Content<\/p>\n<\/h2>\n<\/section>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tThe settlement papers with Franco, Abrams, and Abernathy do not detail specific accusations \u2014 like Franco\u2019s, the other two settlements reflect that \u201c[t]he Settlement Amount constitutes a payment for damages for Claimant\u2019s alleged personal, physical injuries and sickness\u201d \u2014 nor does Simmons admit wrongdoing in the settlements, which state that his payment does not imply \u201cany admission of liability, fault, or wrongdoing.\u201d Sallie and Jones\u2019 settlements also state that the agreements do not admit any liability of wrongdoing, nor specify exact allegations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tIn interviews with <em>Rolling Stone <\/em>prior to the resolution<em>,<\/em> Franco, Abrams, and Abernathy largely described Simmons\u2019 apparent delay in payment as another emotional blow in the already-arduous process of legal action against him. His nonpayment, which spanned more than a year at the time of these interviews, felt like another trauma.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cIt was devastating,\u201d Franco said in an April interview with <em>Rolling Stone<\/em>, before the resolution. \u201cI just felt so stupid that I thought this person would follow through, that I thought that someone who could do what he did would turn around and acknowledge me and make some type of amends. You exposed yourself to this, and now this person again shows you that it doesn\u2019t matter to him.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tSimmons has said that \u201cI own no property in the United States,\u201d and has cried poverty in filings. His legal team, in a defamation suit filed by former music-industry executive Drew Dixon, who<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/russell-simmons-sued-for-defamation-by-drew-dixon-after-assault-accusation-1234967539\/\"> accused him of rape<\/a> in 2017, said in September that he owes them more than $100,000 in fees. (Simmons has denied Dixon\u2019s claims.) The attorneys also said that Simmons is unable to pay a $15,000 penalty imposed by the court on his legal team for missing a scheduled court hearing.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"pullquote larva \/\/ lrv-a-font-theme-primary lrv-u-border-b-2 lrv-u-border-t-2 lrv-u-margin-a-00 lrv-u-text-align-center u-font-size-60 u-line-height-56 u-padding-b-175 u-padding-t-175 u-padding-lr-2@tablet lrv-a-font-secondary-xxl   \"><p>\n\t<!-- disable-pmc_link_tags_to_related_posts-starts --><\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou exposed yourself to this, and now this person again shows you it doesn\u2019t matter to him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><cite>Wendy Franco<\/cite><!-- disable-pmc_link_tags_to_related_posts-ends --><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tDixon\u2019s lawyer, Kenya Davis, shot back that Simmons has money, urging a New York judge to ignore Simmons\u2019 \u201cpalpably false and self-serving claims of poverty.\u201d Davis said that Simmons has a 75 percent stake in the Gdas resort and noted his \u201congoing partnership with and ownership interest\u201d in a Singapore-based talent agency.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tResolved or not, Franco, Abrams, and Abernathy\u2019s years-long financial purgatory also exemplifies the unfulfilled promises of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/metoo\/\" id=\"auto-tag_metoo\" data-tag=\"metoo\">#MeToo<\/a>. Women were encouraged to take action against men who had allegedly harmed them \u2014 often upending their lives in the process \u2014 only to find that the financial and emotional relief in coming forward might be ephemeral at best, nonexistent at worst. Simmons\u2019 protracted nonpayment also reflects the logistical perils and broader challenges for anyone navigating the legal process. People can willingly enter into settlements \u2014 as Simmons did \u2014 but if they don\u2019t pay, enforcement of these agreements could spiral into a labyrinthine and prolonged legal fight<strong>.<\/strong>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cIt could be indefinite,\u201d says Daniel Tabak, a partner at the New York law firm Cohen &amp; Gresser who focuses on bankruptcy and was not involved in any Simmons cases. \u201cThere\u2019s no guarantee that [plaintiffs] will ever be able to collect.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tMeanwhile, Simmons\u2019 financial liabilities don\u2019t seem to have impeded his movements. On Aug. 11, he posted a video of himself and a fan to his Instagram shot in New York City. \u201cNYC can be so magical,\u201d he wrote. \u201cJust met this wonderful young lady. She is full of love\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<h2 id=\"a-life-changing-trauma\" class=\"heading larva \/\/   lrv-a-font-primary-l   \">\n\t\t<strong>A \u2018Life-Changing Trauma<\/strong>\u2019\t<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tFor years, Franco dealt with her pain personally and alone, and tried as best as she could to avoid thinking about Simmons. \u201cI did not follow Russell Simmons in any way. I was very averse to him and everything about him,\u201d she says. The 50-year-old came to the U.S. with her family from the Dominican Republic at age 11, and describes the move as \u201ca lot of trauma.\u201d She and her siblings were separated and scattered into foster homes during the immigration process. Franco says she was \u201cpretty much living on my own by the age of 14\u201d and staying with friends in New York.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tShe wanted to act, but her dyslexia and need to learn English on her own scared her from reading in public. But Franco, who ultimately became enmeshed in the downtown New York City arts world, taught herself by \u201creading <em>The Outsiders<\/em> with a dictionary, listening to the Smiths, and translating.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tThe resilience carried forward. Franco kept up with Simmons\u2019 accusers through social media and discovered the Adult Survivors Act. The 2022 New York state law created a one-year window for adult survivors of sexual misconduct to file civil claims against their alleged abusers that otherwise would have exceeded the statute of limitations. \u201cIt felt like divine intervention,\u201d she says, sometimes twirling a ringlet around her finger when she speaks. \u201cIt felt crazy and it worked out. I felt like a little bit of my history was validated. It was amazing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tThe settlement addressed a sense of dehumanization that had weighed on her for years. \u201cIt\u2019s like a life-shifting, life-changing trauma that makes you doubt who you are and your value and your worth, and it means so little to the person who traumatizes you, who abuses you; it means nothing to them,\u201d she says. \u201cThey might not even fucking remember it. So to have that person have to admit, even if it\u2019s just to get you off their back, that you existed \u2026 it\u2019s incredibly important.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tAbernathy \u2014 who as Sheri Sher was a founding member of the pioneering all-female hip-hop group Mercedes Ladies \u2014 describes a sense of empowerment in her decision to come forward. The 64-year-old former rapper still delivers her words enthusiastically, often smiling as she recalls the group\u2019s music. She tells <em>Rolling Stone<\/em> that she worried about reprisal amid her already turbulent life had she come forward back in the 1980s. Abernathy\u2019s family, consisting of her mother and 10 siblings, constantly faced eviction in New York City. Writing was her solace. She was frequently scribbling in black-and-white-speckled notebooks, covering one side in rhymes and the other with diary-like missives.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tDuring one eviction, Abernathy recalls, city marshals took her composition book. \u201cThat really hurt me,\u201c she says. She crossed paths with Simmons a few times while she was pushing hard for Mercedes Ladies\u2019 success. She has<a href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/music\/russell-simmons-accusers-speak-out-that-night-completely-shattered-me\/\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\"> previously said<\/a> that Simmons attacked her one evening after luring her to his office under the false pretence of a business conversation.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tAbernathy alluded to the alleged rape in her<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Mercedes-Ladies-Novel-Sheri-Sher-ebook\/dp\/B08BXZPCGH?ref_=ast_author_mpb&amp;asc_source=web&amp;asc_campaign=web&amp;asc_refurl=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.rollingstone.com%2Fmusic%2Fmusic-features%2Frussell-simmons-sexual-misconduct-assault-lawsuit-1235448701%2F\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\"> 2008 autobiographical novel<\/a>, <em>Mercedes Ladies,<\/em> but did not name Simmons despite her friends\u2019 encouragement to do so. Following allegations against Harvey Weinstein that October, more women were coming forward with sexual misconduct claims against powerful men in the entertainment industry, including music, notably leading to the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-features\/sean-diddy-combs-cassie-trial-r-kelly-1235345968\/\"> conviction<\/a> of R&amp;B star R. Kelly and sprawling<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-features\/marilyn-manson-abuse-allegations-1256888\/\"> allegations<\/a> against Marilyn Manson. (Manson has denied the claims.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tModel Keri Claussen<a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/business\/hollywood\/la-fi-brett-ratner-russell-simmons-20171119-htmlstory.html\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\"> accused<\/a> Simmons of sexual assault in a November 2017 article in the <em>Los Angeles Times.<\/em> Less than two weeks later, screenwriter Jenny Lumet alleged in <em>The Hollywood Reporter <\/em>that Simmons<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/news\/general-news\/writer-jenny-lumet-russell-simmons-sexually-violated-me-guest-column-1062934\/\" target=\"_blank\"> sexually assaulted her<\/a>. Three women, including Dixon, accused Simmons of rape in a Dec. 13, 2017,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2017\/12\/13\/arts\/music\/russell-simmons-rape.html\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\"> <em>New York Times<\/em> article<\/a>. (Simmons is fighting Dixon\u2019s defamation suit, in part by insisting that his broad denials of sexual misconduct on a podcast did not directly name her.)\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"pullquote larva \/\/ lrv-a-font-theme-primary lrv-u-border-b-2 lrv-u-border-t-2 lrv-u-margin-a-00 lrv-u-text-align-center u-font-size-60 u-line-height-56 u-padding-b-175 u-padding-t-175 u-padding-lr-2@tablet lrv-a-font-secondary-xxl   \"><p>\n\t<!-- disable-pmc_link_tags_to_related_posts-starts --><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI felt that if I came out [in 2008]<em>,<\/em> I would have a lot of trouble on my hands.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><cite>Sherri Abernathy<\/cite><!-- disable-pmc_link_tags_to_related_posts-ends --><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tThat same day, Abernathy was one of five women who accused Simmons of misconduct in a<a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/business\/hollywood\/la-fi-russell-simmons-yoga-20171213-htmlstory.html\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\"> <em>Los Angeles Times<\/em><\/a> article. \u201cI never really expected that all these women would come out. I thought I was the only one,\u201d she says. \u201cWhen it came out, I felt a little bit of empowerment behind it. I thought there was never gonna be justice, but justice did come out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tSimmons has repeatedly denied the claims,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2017\/12\/13\/arts\/music\/russell-simmons-statement.html\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\"> saying<\/a> in 2017 that \u201cthese horrific accusations have shocked me to my core, and all of my relations have been consensual.\u201d He apologized in another statement for being \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2017\/12\/13\/arts\/music\/russell-simmons-rape.html\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">thoughtless and insensitive.<\/a>\u201d Weeks earlier, he<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/news\/general-news\/writer-jenny-lumet-russell-simmons-sexually-violated-me-guest-column-1062934\/\" target=\"_blank\"> said that he had<\/a> \u201cnever committed any acts of aggression or violence in my life. I would never knowingly cause fear or harm to anyone.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tThe settlement \u201cwasn\u2019t about money,\u201d says Abernathy, noting how she didn\u2019t name Simmons despite her book coming out at the height of his fame. \u201cI\u2019m not a money person. I always worked and kept paying my own way.\u201d For Abernathy, who recently retired after working as a New York state court officer for 20 years, the settlement meant that Simmons was \u201cbeing held to account for his actions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tAbrams, a writer and survivor advocate, says she was surprised that there might be any way to get justice. \u201cWhen I first heard of the Adult Survivors Act, I was shocked that it would even pass. I always held reservations about it as a mechanism for justice, because I know how extensive sexual victimization is in our society,\u201d she says. \u201cWe treat it as if it is this aberration, and while it is aberrant, unfortunately it is common. And one of the things we\u2019ve learned from #MeToo was how widespread this issue is. It\u2019s not something that just happens on the fringes of society.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tAbrams, who has said that she came from a chaotic home, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-features\/russell-simmons-an-extra-host-nbc-news-a-sexual-assault-accusers-story-1123824\/\" target=\"_blank\">told <em>The Hollywood Reporter<\/em><\/a> that she met Simmons in 1989. She had moved to New York City the prior year, and was working as a nightclub hostess. (She also worked as an executive assistant at Def Jam in 1992.) A few years after meeting Simmons, they had sex at various points. In 1994, Abrams saw Simmons for what she believed was a platonic meeting. She had previously told him she no longer wanted a sexual relationship and he agreed to that, according to her interview with <em>The Hollywood Reporter.<\/em> When they were out that night, Abrams has previously said, she was drinking alcohol while Simmons drank sparkling water, claiming he was sober.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tLater that evening, Abrams asked Simmons to direct his driver to bring her home, but she was driven to his apartment instead. Abrams said that she passed out on his bed with her clothes on. Simmons signed settlements with Abrams, Abernathy, and Franco and agreed to an October 2024 deadline for payment. These settlement agreements were confidential \u2014 meaning that the women were legally barred from disclosing the amount or even the existence of a potential settlement. Nobody would know that he paid the women a dime, obviating the possibility of additional bad press. As part of these settlements, Simmons also signed paperwork attesting that he owed them the settlement money and confirming the payment deadline.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tBecause these statements effectively validated the settlements, they should have expedited enforcement. The statements also stipulated that if Simmons didn\u2019t pay, the women\u2019s attorneys could file these statements \u2014 and the total amounts owed \u2014 in court and make them public.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tSimmons blew past the deadline without paying any of the women. The women\u2019s attorneys filed these statements in October 2024, publicly revealing that he had brokered confidential agreements, alongside the amounts. \u201cI was looking at my phone every day,\u201d Franco says of waiting for Simmons\u2019 payment. When she spoke to her attorney at the deadline and learned that he hadn\u2019t paid, \u201cit was devastating.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cIt just made me feel crazy. I cried for days. I was completely incapacitated,\u201d she tells <em>Rolling Stone.<\/em> \u201cI didn\u2019t work for a little bit, and not because I\u2019m melodramatic and [not because] I\u2019m a fucking take-to-my-bed person.\u201d Franco was angry. The burden of that limbo, she says, was \u201clike an anchor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tAbernathy voices similar sentiments. After a \u201cvery tedious and long\u201d process, she and Simmons had come to an agreement, and for her, it seemed like it would be as over as it could be. \u201cI thought, and I\u2019m quite sure the rest of the girls thought, that Russell was going to keep [his promise].\u201d When he delayed payment for more than a year, all the while leaning harder into his Zen vibe and luxe tropical lifestyle on social media, \u201cit was just like living a nightmare over and over.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"pullquote larva \/\/ lrv-a-font-theme-primary lrv-u-border-b-2 lrv-u-border-t-2 lrv-u-margin-a-00 lrv-u-text-align-center u-font-size-60 u-line-height-56 u-padding-b-175 u-padding-t-175 u-padding-lr-2@tablet lrv-a-font-secondary-xxl   \"><p>\n\t<!-- disable-pmc_link_tags_to_related_posts-starts --><\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow do you go from the godfather of hip-hop to this broken, cornered animal on this tiny island? That\u2019s quite sad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><cite>Sil Lai Abrams<\/cite><!-- disable-pmc_link_tags_to_related_posts-ends --><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tLast spring, Abernathy underwent brain surgery for an aneurysm and was \u201cin the hospital fighting for my life.\u201d As a result, Abernathy says she must avoid stress and keep her blood pressure down. She also needs a clear head for a hopeful Mercedes Ladies project. \u201cI didn\u2019t want myself to get upset,\u201d she said at the time of the ongoing nonpayment. \u201cI didn\u2019t want to start crying again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tAbrams says the past year touched on her longstanding reservations about the legal process: \u201cWith the Adult Survivors Act, my concern was that once these cases began to be settled through the civil courts, a pushback would come [with] the narrative that had always existed: that the intention of a survivor coming forward is monetary gain.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tShe says she still decided to give it a shot, going into the negotiation \u201cwith an open mind.\u201d She was baffled at Simmons\u2019 delay in upholding the agreement, saying the situation \u201cjust [kept] him tethered to all of us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cHow do you go from the godfather of hip-hop to this broken, cornered animal on this tiny island?\u201d Abrams says. \u201cThat\u2019s quite sad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tAbrams says the entire situation points \u201cto the limitations that civil suits can have on actually bringing survivors some measure of justice that\u2019s intended.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"remaining-optimistic\" class=\"heading larva \/\/   lrv-a-font-primary-l   \">\n\t\t<strong>Remaining Optimistic<\/strong>\t<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tThe whole point of coming to a settlement is to avoid lengthy lawsuits and trials that can cost both sides more money. Most settlements include confidentiality clauses that not only conceal the settlement figure, but also bar anyone involved from publicly discussing it. When someone doesn\u2019t pay, collecting the owed money isn\u2019t as straightforward as sending an angry letter. The person with the purse strings could decide to stall or skip out on their tab. Attorneys can take them to court. A judge can order payment. Banks can be forced to comply. For years, Simmons has been fighting his ex-wife, Kimora Lee, in court over millions of dollars in Celsius energy drink shares that the feds want to seize following the money-laundering conspiracy conviction of Kimora\u2019s ex-husband Tim Leissner. (Through a rep, she declined to comment for this article.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tHow exactly the Celsius case will play out is unknown \u2014 a recent court filing suggests that Simmons and Kimora might have come to some sort of agreement that\u2019s yet to be finalized \u2014 but at the very least, Simmons has tens of millions on the line. Three of his accusers \u2014 Sallie, Baker, and Jones \u2014 have appeared in court filings as \u201cinterested parties\u201d in the Celsius case, though it\u2019s unclear if any of the disputed money would go to his accusers.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tWilson, Franco\u2019s attorney, has subpoenaed a business firm that works with Simmons for information about his finances. He has also subpoenaed one of Simmons\u2019 daughters, Aoki Lee Simmons, for financial information. Wilson\u2019s firm also sent Aoki Lee a letter dated April 4 warning that if she spent any of her father\u2019s money, she could be on the hook for his nonpayment. (A rep for Aoki said he was not able to reach her for comment.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tResolution aside, the months of waiting both took a toll and prompted questions for the women. \u201cHe has his freedom, technically, but he\u2019s trapped in a prison of his own making, mentally and otherwise \u2014 he\u2019s not dealing with reality,\u201d Abrams said in July. \u201cThe reality is: He owes a significant number of people a significant amount of money.
