The words came easily, tumbling out gently over finger-picked notes: \u201cDrive down to the lake, it\u2019s not hard to find\/Water\u2019s cold, sun continues to shine\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tHe didn\u2019t think the song was finished, but it was getting late, so he put the demo aside and didn\u2019t listen to it for another day or two. When he did, he was struck by what he heard. \u201cI felt like I\u2019d captured something,\u201d the soft-spoken songwriter and guitarist says now, on a Zoom a few days ahead of the album\u2019s Nov. 7 release. \u201cA sense of impending doom, but also a sense of peace, and finding hope within this chaos.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tGunn was starting fresh at the time after releasing three albums on Matador Records between 2016 and 2021. Those years brought a new swath of fans to Gunn\u2019s meditative folk and rock sounds, showcased on low-key masterpieces like 2019\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-features\/steve-gunn-the-unseen-in-between-interview-777194\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>The Unseen In Between<\/em><\/a>. But that was always only part of what he did, coexisting with farther-out <a href=\"https:\/\/stevegunn.bandcamp.com\/album\/music-for-writers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">instrumental explorations<\/a> and improvised work of many flavors, and now that chapter was over.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cI\u2019d been freeing myself up from a lot of things, and I wanted to make a record that reflects that,\u201d he says. \u201cI wanted to step out, be a little more independent, restart my process of songwriting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tWorking on his own at home, he demoed songs like the wonderstruck \u201cLoon,\u201d inspired by his experience hearing those birds\u2019 high, haunting call on the northern lakes of New York\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adkloon.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Adirondacks region<\/a>. \u201cI related to the sound that they make at night,\u201d he says. \u201cIt\u2019s so melancholy and beautiful. I became fascinated with them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tOther songs, like \u201cNearly There\u201d and \u201cMorning on K Road,\u201d thoughtfully consider themes of death and rebirth. He wrote the latter song after a chance encounter with an old friend he hadn\u2019t seen in a while. \u201cWe hung out for a few hours,\u201d he says. \u201cIt was a beautiful time. When he was walking away, I felt this heaviness. Though they\u2019d drafted bands full of talented friends and session musicians in the past, this time they decided to keep it to just the two of them, recording together in a light-filled attic full of guitars in Elkington\u2019s Chicago home.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cIt felt a lot more personal, more intimate,\u201d Gunn says. \u201cI really like to work off the cuff and be spontaneous. It\u2019s where I come up with my best, my most meaningful material. I wanted to <em>not<\/em> be in a fancy studio and <em>not<\/em> have this amazing band\u2026. It felt very freeing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tAfter they got the basic tracks for the album down, Elkington wrote gorgeously understated arrangements for the songs \u2014\u00a0the kind of string charts that truly earn the overused term \u201ccinematic,\u201d deepening the delicate tones in Gunn\u2019s music without ever distracting. \u201cHe has a really amazing ear, and an ability to get underneath the music and support it,\u201d Gunn says. \u201cThat\u2019s what I needed.\u201d<\/p>\n<section class=\"brands-most-popular \/\/ recirculation-modules trending-in-article lrv-u-margin-tb-2 lrv-u-border-a-2 u-box-shadow-5-5 lrv-u-padding-lr-1 a-span1 u-padding-b-1@tablet u-overflow-hidden\">\n<h2 id=\"section-heading\" class=\"c-heading larva  lrv-u-text-align-center u-border-color-black a-font-theme-primary-xxs lrv-u-color-black lrv-u-text-transform-uppercase u-letter-spacing-0063 lrv-u-padding-t-050 u-padding-b-0375@tablet lrv-u-padding-b-050@mobile-max lrv-u-border-b-2\">\n<p>\t\tTrending Stories<\/p>\n<\/h2>\n<\/section>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tGunn ended up choosing to release <em>Daylight Daylight<\/em> on <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.noquarter.net\/\">No Quarter Records<\/a>, a small, Pennsylvania-based label that has attracted some notice in recent years as an artist\u2019s haven. He says being part of a modest operation where his labelmates include songwriters like <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-lists\/will-oldham-my-life-in-15-songs-723480\/\">Will Oldham<\/a> and the late <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/michael-hurley-dead-obit-influential-outsider-folk-singer-1235310171\/\">Michael Hurley<\/a> suits him. \u201cI just want to keep making music and putting records out,\u201d he says. \u201cI don\u2019t want to have these big campaigns. I just want to try to be an honest artist and let it come naturally.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tToward the end of the recording process, he revisited that song he\u2019d recorded late at night in his kitchen. It reminded him somehow of the famous story about Neil Young sitting by a fireplace and recording <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Bn6PQR1v8YM\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">\u201cWill to Love\u201d<\/a> in a single take in 1976. He called the song \u201cDaylight\u201d at first, until Elkington suggested doubling the title. \u201cAnd I was like, \u2018That\u2019s the name of the record,&#8217;\u201d Gunn says. \u201cRebirth, beginning again, letting some daylight come into the darkness.
