Then, like Staples, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/norah-jones\/\" id=\"auto-tag_norah-jones\" data-tag=\"norah-jones\">Norah Jones<\/a>, and Warren Hayes, he proceeded to rock the latest edition of New York\u2019s Soho Sessions shows anyway.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tA private live music event in that part of Manhattan, the Soho Sessions has become one of New York\u2019s must-see events for the 150 or so fortunate to snag a ticket to each of its roughly 10-times-a-year shows. The fifth-floor loft space itself has an illustrious history: Once upon a rhyme, it was home to Chung King Studios, where classic old-school hip-hop albums by Public Enemy, the Beastie Boys, LL Cool J, and Run-DMC were recorded.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tBut since it launched in 2021, the Soho Sessions gigs have presented intimate performances by legends (Paul Simon, Elvis Costello, Nile Rodgers and Chic, Taj Mahal, Steve Earle) and comparative newcomers (Marcus King, Yola, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/maren-morris-my-church-yola-live-video-1235416300\/\">Maren Morris<\/a>, Lukas Nelson). Each show is also designed to bring awareness to a particular cause: Befitting an issue close to him, last year\u2019s Simon set, which was attended by the likes of Jerry Seinfeld, Jackson Browne, and Whoopi Goldberg, benefited the Stanford Initiative to Cure Hearing Loss.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tIn honor of Bruce Willis, who\u2019s been battling frontotemporal dementia\u00a0for two years, last night\u2019s Soho Sessions aimed to raise awareness of (and funds for) the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theaftd.org\/\">Association for Frontotemporal Degeneration<\/a>\u00a0(AFTD), the organization leading research into the incurable condition.\u00a0To an audience dotted with fellow actors \u2014 Kevin Bacon, Michael J. Backed by guitarist Larry Campbell, drummer Steve Jordan, bassist Joey Spampinato of NRBQ, and pianist Ivan Neville, Richards\u2019 set was brief \u2014 only three songs \u2014 but made up for the brevity with a clanking, juke-joint-rocking performance. With Richards and Campbell trading guitar parts, the band opened with a slow-rolling version of Big Bill Broonzy\u2019s blues standard  \u201cKey to the Highway,\u201d leading into a version of the Stones\u2019 Keith-led gem \u201cYou Got the Silver,\u201d with Campbell on lap slide guitar. In a somewhat early nod to the upcoming holiday season, Richards \u2014 in a black cap and looking relaxed and at ease \u2014 took the band thorough a romping version of Chuck Berry\u2019s \u201cRun Rudolph Run,\u201d with Campbell and Richards swapping solos. (Note to Richards: Please take this band on tour with you.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tAs he acknowledged in the last set of the night, jam-band legend Warren Haynes was in a somewhat challenging position. \u201cKeith said he had to follow Mavis, and I have to follow Keith,\u201d he shrugged. But to a house that remained packed, Haynes gamely played B.B. King\u2019s \u201cThe Thrill Is Gone,\u201d his own anthemic \u201cSoul Shine,\u201d and a version of Blind Willie McTell\u2019s \u201cStatesboro Blues\u201d that harked back to his tenure in the Allman Brothers Band.
