\n\tElton John<\/a> performed an emotional rendition of the Beach Boys<\/a>\u2019 \u201cGod Only Knows\u201d as part of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame\u2019s tribute to Brian Wilson<\/a>, who died in June<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\n\tBefore he started the song, John stepped onstage and shared a few memories with Wilson over the years, recounting the first time they met in Los Angeles. \u201cWe were scared shitless because he was my idol. He was the one that influenced me more than anybody else when it came to writing songs on the piano. It was an evening we would never forget,\u201d he said. \u201cMeeting someone who was a true genius doesn\u2019t happen very often.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\tHe noted how he and Wilson became friends who sat in on each other\u2019s records through the years. \u201cWe loved each other,\u201d he says. \u201cI can\u2019t think of anyone else I\u2019d rather pay tribute than Brian Wilson and his family with this incredible song.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tJohn took to social media<\/a> after Wilson\u2019s death to remember the man he said had the \u201cbiggest influence of my songwriting ever.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cBrian Wilson was always so kind to me from the day I met him,\u201d John explained in caption to a photo of the pair in a room flush with studio equipment. \u201cHe sang \u2018Someone Saved My Life Tonight\u2019 at a tribute concert in 2003, and it was an extraordinary moment for me. played on his solo records, he sang on my album, The Union<\/em>, and even performed for my AIDS Foundation.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThis year\u2019s Rock Hall honored other music greats that the world lost recently: The event kicked off with a star-studded tribute to Sly Stone that included Stevie Wonder, Flea, Questlove, Leon Thomas, Jennifer Hudson, Beck, and Maxwell. The artists launched into a high-powered medley that included \u201cDance to the Music,\u201d \u201cEveryday People,\u201d \u201cThank You,\u201d and \u201cI Want To Take You Higher,\u201d all while images of the soul legend blared in the background in bright, vibrant colors. Stone and Wilson were also included in the telecast\u2019s In Memoriam, which also honored Ozzy Osborne, Roy Ayers, and Marianne Faithfull, among others.<\/p>\n
