We\u2019re not doing this to rebuild our careers. We\u2019re doing this \u2019cause we like it, and we just wanna play.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tIn the new episode of <em>Rolling Stone Music Now<\/em>, the trio sits down with host Brian Hiatt to discuss the upcoming album, the band\u2019s origins, and much, much more. And so I suddenly had to put a band together for the night. And as I was processing the news, Darius texted me\u2026 And I went, \u2018Hey man, do you want to come up to Nashville in a couple weeks and sing at this school gig? I\u2019ll put a band together.\u2019 And he immediately said, \u2018Yeah, let\u2019s do it.&#8217;\u201d Rucker suggested getting Mills involved, and the gig went so well that they immediately started talking about the future. <\/p>\n<section class=\"brands-most-popular \/\/ editors-pick-module lrv-u-margin-tb-2 lrv-u-border-a-2 u-box-shadow-5-5 lrv-u-padding-lr-1 a-span1 u-padding-b-1@tablet u-overflow-hidden\">\n<h2 id=\"section-heading\" class=\"c-heading larva  lrv-u-text-align-center u-border-color-black a-font-theme-primary-xxs lrv-u-color-black lrv-u-text-transform-uppercase u-letter-spacing-0063 lrv-u-padding-t-050 u-padding-b-0375@tablet lrv-u-padding-b-050@mobile-max lrv-u-border-b-2\">\n<p>\t\tEditor\u2019s picks<\/p>\n<\/h2>\n<\/section>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t<strong>Michael Stipe came up with the band name, and at first Gorman and Rucker hated it.<\/strong>   \u201cStipe said, \u2018Howl Owl Howl,&#8217;\u201d Mills recalls. \u201cAnd I was like, \u2018Okay, that\u2019s it. That is so weird that I\u2019m gonna send it to \u2019em and they\u2019re gonna hate it.\u2019 And they did.\u201d Within two days, Gorman says, \u201cit was just in my brain. I couldn\u2019t get rid of it. I was like, \u2018Oh shit. Howl Owl Howl\u2019s great.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t<strong>The single \u201cMy Cologne\u201d was inspired by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/ariana-grande\/\" id=\"auto-tag_ariana-grande\" data-tag=\"ariana-grande\">Ariana Grande<\/a>\u2018s decision to launch a perfume called R.E.M., but Mills hopes she\u2019ll find it funny. <\/strong>\u200a \u201cNobody\u2019s angry, nobody\u2019s hating,\u201d Mills says.\u201dIt\u2019s supposed to be funny. It\u2019s tongue in cheek and I hope somewhere someday she sits back and laughs when she hears it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t<strong>There will be no R.E.M. reunion.<\/strong> \u201cR.E.M. broke up because it was time and we all recognized it and we all had thought about it before we ever mentioned it to each other, \u201d Mills says. \u201cAnd, you know, it\u2019s fine.\u201d The band did step on stage together to play one song for the Songwriters Hall of Fame last year, but Mills doesn\u2019t consider that a reunion. \u200a\u201dWe didn\u2019t reform, we got together to play one song one time, because that\u2019s what you do with the Songwriters Hall of Fame,\u201d he says. \u201cIt\u2019s churlish to go in there and not do the thing that everyone does when you play there. So we did, and, and it just completely reinforced our belief that we\u2019d done the right thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t<strong>Rucker is candid about not being eager for more Hootie &amp; the Blowfish tours.<\/strong> \u201cEvery time I played with Hootie, in \u201919 and two years ago, it\u2019s because I thought the fans wanted it,\u201d Rucker says. \u201cIt\u2019s not because I wanted to. I wasn\u2019t dying to go play with Blowfish. I wasn\u2019t dying to take a huge pay cut, but you know, the fans wanted it\u201d The band will play Stagecoach this year, but that will be it for a long while. \u201cWe won\u2019t play again anytime soon. If we play again, I\u2019ll be well into my sixties if we ever play again.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t<strong>Rucker is also nearly done with his next solo country album, but is more focused on Howl Owl Howl right now.<\/strong>\u200a \u201cIt\u2019s just more satisfying,\u201d he says. \u201cDoing the country thing and being a solo artist is great, it\u2019s cool. I can\u2019t imagine anybody else wants to hear 35 minutes of this. But I just really enjoy working with my friends and collaborating and creating something together.
