So he started up a whole new band, with his wife Linda. It sounded like a crazy idea. As he says, \u201cWhen Linda joined Wings, eyebrows were raised, and not only in the press, Mick Jagger adding, \u2018Wot\u2019s he got his old lady in the band for?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tThe<em> Wings <\/em>book is a massive oral history edited by Ted Widmer, from new interviews by filmmaker Morgan Neville (<em>20 Feet From Stardom<\/em>). It accompanies Neville\u2019s upcoming documentary <em>Man on the Run<\/em>, which recently debuted at the Telluride Film Festival. The book has 150 photographs, with Paul\u2019s handwritten lyrics and diary entries, along with commentary from Linda McCartney, John Lennon, George Harrison, Ringo Starr, George Martin, Sean Ono Lennon, Jann Wenner, Yoko Ono, Mick Jagger, and all the members of Wings.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tThe book follows the story from McCartney\u2019s 1969 solo debut and the 1971 classic <em>Ram<\/em>. But instead of going for superstar sessions, or high-profile solo shows, he recruits a new band and starts over from scratch, based from his Scottish farm, hustling the way his old band used to in the early days. They drive around to universities and play tiny shows for surprised students, with that experimental spirit. \u201cThe fact was that we could just try things and just do them,\u201d McCartney recalls. \u201cIf it worked, great. The band is also dropping a definitive triple-vinyl anthology set, personally selected by McCartney. For years, he was reluctant to reclaim this period. \u201cBut suddenly, Wings has found its moment again,\u201d he recalls. \u201cI remember doing an interview with a young guy, I think it was with Rolling Stone, and I was talking about <em>Sgt. Pepper<\/em> and the Beatles. And he said, \u2018Well, yeah, I get that, but that\u2019s not really my period.\u2019 He said, \u2018I\u2019m more interested in Wings and <em>Band on the Run<\/em>.\u2019 I thought, here we go.
