When Wyatt Flores made his headlining debut at Nashville\u2019s Ryman Auditorium in late 2024, Roark opened the show. He has written songs that were featured on each of the last two <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/turnpike-troubadours\/\" id=\"auto-tag_turnpike-troubadours\" data-tag=\"turnpike-troubadours\">Turnpike Troubadours<\/a> records and the most recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-features\/muscadine-bloodline-the-coastal-plain-1235082387\/\">Muscadine Bloodline<\/a> album. This fall, he landed prime opening slots for both Noeline Hofmann and the Castellows. Now, he\u2019s taking his turn in the spotlight.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cI\u2019m ready to expand this thing to a nationwide audience,\u201d Roark says of his full-length debut, <em>Bad Reputation<\/em>, which dropped on Friday. The 11-track record, a blend of Oklahoma Red Dirt and Southern rock, is heavy on characters and landscapes shaped by Roark\u2019s own musical journey.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cIn <em>Bad Reputation<\/em>, I go through the evolution of a guy dealing with life\u2019s ups and downs, and dealing with situations where you\u2019re always going to be the bad person in someone\u2019s eyes,\u201d Roark tells <em>Rolling Stone<\/em>. \u201cThat\u2019s where I\u2019m at currently in my writing. <em>Bad Reputation<\/em> is a collection of songs that I want to tell that story with.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tRoark is from the same Oklahoma town \u2014 Tahlequah \u2014 that gave rise to Turnpike, and has spent the last half-decade playing with, writing with, and being mentored by Turnpike bassist RC Edwards. They co-wrote a pair of Turnpike Troubadours songs, \u201cChipping Mill\u201d off the band\u2019s 2024 record <em>A Cat in the Rain<\/em>, and \u201cRuby Ann\u201d from the Red Dirt torchbearers\u2019 2025 album, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-features\/turnpike-troubadours-the-price-of-admission-new-album-1235315281\/\">The Price of Admission<\/a><\/em>. Roark threw Turnpike fans a bone with the latter, as the character Ruby Ann reappears in \u201cColorado High\u201d on <em>Bad Reputation<\/em>.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Colorado High\" width=\"1200\" height=\"900\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/PWwDPUSY9M8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tCertainly, the Red Dirt stalwarts are an influence on Roark, but his sound features more electric guitars and a rhythm closer to bluegrass than the swampy country approach of Turnpike. Produced by Andrew Bair (who has played keys for Paul Cauthen and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-features\/jason-boland-red-dirt-last-kings-of-babylon-1235301538\/\">Jason Boland and the Stragglers<\/a>) and largely recorded at the Closet Studio in Tulsa, <em>Bad Reputation<\/em> emphasizes Roark\u2019s gravelly vocals and storytelling lyrics. The self-aware title track features Roark lamenting \u201ctrouble\u2019s all I\u2019ve known.\u201d Meanwhile, \u201cRose Quartz Perfume\u201d is laced with optimism, despite being inspired by an unsuccessful quest by Roark and his wife, Hannah, to have a child.<\/p>\n<section class=\"brands-most-popular \/\/ editors-pick-module lrv-u-margin-tb-2 lrv-u-border-a-2 u-box-shadow-5-5 lrv-u-padding-lr-1 a-span1 u-padding-b-1@tablet u-overflow-hidden\">\n<h2 id=\"section-heading\" class=\"c-heading larva  lrv-u-text-align-center u-border-color-black a-font-theme-primary-xxs lrv-u-color-black lrv-u-text-transform-uppercase u-letter-spacing-0063 lrv-u-padding-t-050 u-padding-b-0375@tablet lrv-u-padding-b-050@mobile-max lrv-u-border-b-2\">\n<p>\t\tEditor\u2019s picks<\/p>\n<\/h2>\n<\/section>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cI had read about the effects of rose quartz, the stone,\u201d Roark recalls. \u201cSo, I bought her a whole bunch of those. I wanted to help out. Well, life has its certain ways, and it didn\u2019t work out. I wrote the majority of that song and got the chorus where I wanted it, and I took it to RC, and he helped me finish it. I wanted to put to words the feeling of Hannah and I trying for another child and it not coming to fruition right now, but maybe in another time it will.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tRoark\u2019s friendship with Edwards dates back to the pandemic. Roark and his wife had moved to Tahlequah from nearby Gore, and Roark found occasional work playing at a bar in Tahlequah that happened to be one of Edwards\u2019 favorite hangouts. Sure enough, Edwards showed up one night and took notice. He and Roark became fast friends, brief bandmates in Edwards\u2019 band, and co-writers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cI was trying a song out for the very first time, and he heard it,\u201d Roark says of Edwards. \u201cAfter I got offstage, he said, \u2018Man, you sounded really good. Would you want to play electric guitar for me in my band?\u2019 And I said, \u2018Absolutely.\u2019 We did that for a little while, and we started writing together. He took me under his wing and showed me everything he knew about the business, media and songwriting. He brought me around the Turnpike guys, and they\u2019ve also taken me under their wing. They\u2019ve helped me hone my craft as a professional. Turnpike is very efficient. They go out there, they mind their P\u2019s and Q\u2019s, they kill their set, and then they go do it again the next night. Those connections led to a series of writing sessions in Nashville in late 2024. Roark joined Charlie Stanton and Gary Muncaster of Muscadine for one of those. It sounds like a Muscadine song to me, but it\u2019s about Tahlequah.
