\n\tReggae legend Jimmy Cliff<\/a> is being remembered by his peers and admirers following his death<\/a> at the age of 81.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tIn a post on Instagram, the family of Bob Marley<\/a>, including his son Ziggy, expressed their condolences to Cliff\u2019s family and loved ones as \u201che makes his transition.\u201d The post noted that Cliff was an \u201cinstrumental figure\u201d in Marley\u2019s rise, \u201chaving brought him to producer Leslie Kong in 1962 to record his very first singles, \u2018Judge Not\u2019 and \u2018One Cup of Coffee.\u2019\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tThe post included a quote from an old interview Marley gave, where he expressed his gratitude for Cliff\u2019s help: \u201cJimmy was big then because he already had a hit name \u2018Hurricane Hattie\u2019 and later \u2018Miss Jamaica\u2019 another big one. I really love Jimmy because he always tries to help people out.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tSean Paul<\/a> shared a photo of Cliff on Instagram<\/a>, writing, \u201cR.I.P 2 a real general. He hit them the harder they came. Fly high my G.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tDancehall great Vybz Kartel<\/a> offered<\/a> an all-caps appreciation, calling Cliff a \u201clegendary Jamaican,\u201d \u201csuperstar reggae icon,\u201d and \u201cfilm legend. \u201c And Shaggy, who shared a photo of himself onstage with Cliff, wrote<\/a>, \u201cHis voice, his message, and his spirit helped shape the soul of reggae music,\u201d adding, \u201cWe\u2019ve lost a true icon, but his light and legacy will live on forever.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tJamaica\u2019s Prime Minister Andrew Holness called<\/a> Cliff a \u201ctrue cultural giant whose music carried the heart of our nation to the world, adding: His music lifted people through hard times, inspired generations, and helped to shape the global respect that Jamaican culture enjoys today. We give thanks for his life, his contribution, and the pride he brought to Jamaica.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tYusuf\/Cat Stevens \u2014 who produced Cliff\u2019s song \u201cTrapped,\u201d after Cliff scored a hit with Stevens\u2019 \u201cWild World\u201d \u2014 praised the reggae great,<\/a> who \u201calways seems to be there at crucial stages on my journey.\u201d Stevens added, \u201cHis songs always had some message of peace \u2014 may he find it now and forever.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tFilmmaker Benny Safdie also shared<\/a> a tribute<\/a> alongside a clip of Cliff singing \u201cThe Harder They Come\u201d in the classic 1972 film of the same name. \u201cI don\u2019t know if it\u2019s possible for someone to be more alive than Jimmy Cliff is in this clip from The Harder They Come<\/em>,\u201d Safdie wrote. \u201cI don\u2019t think I can put into words what this whole record means to me. It\u2019s overwhelming in so many ways, his positivity in the face of sadness\u2026 his incredible performance here. He\u2019s still here!\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tIn a statement shared with Rolling Stone<\/em>, Jorma Kaukonen, guitarist for Jefferson Airplane and Hot Tuna, recalled how the Grateful Dead\u2019s Jerry Garcia introduced him to Cliff\u2019s music when he brought over a copy of The Harder They Come <\/em>soundtrack. Decades later, he would get to meet Cliff and \u201ctell him how much I loved his work\u201d at a 2015 gig honoring Garcia.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI\u2019m sure it is not a coincidence that I discovered Jimmy Cliff through Jerry Garcia\u2019s intervention and that thanks to Jerry a lifetime later\u2026 I would meet Jimmy and thank him for introducing me to reggae!\u201d Kaukonen wrote. \u201cHe was a warm and gracious man indeed and it was an honor to meet one of my musical heroes from an earlier time!\u201d<\/p>\n
