And Gill himself did the honors.<\/p>\n<p>The singer admitted to some nerves as he took the stage. &#8220;No pressure, singing the most popular song of all time. Thanks a million,&#8221; he joked to the crowd. &#8220;They asked me to do it, &#8217;cause I&#8217;ll do anything. I ain&#8217;t scared of nothing.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h3><strong>What is the No. 1 Song in Grand Ole Opry History?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The song that earned the distinction of the Opry&#8217;s all-time No. 1 song is a classic: <a href=\"https:\/\/tasteofcountry.com\/tags\/george-jones\" target=\"_blank\">George Jones<\/a>&#8216; &#8220;He Stopped Loving Her Today.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Written by Bobby Braddock and Curly Putman, &#8220;He Stopped Loving Her Today&#8221; was the first single from\u00a0Jones&#8217; 1980\u00a0<em>I Am What I Am<\/em> album. The song was Jones&#8217; first No. 1 hit in six years, coming off a period of time when his career was floundering due to a spiral of drug and alcohol use that led many to believe the singer&#8217;s time in country music might be coming to an end.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Read More<\/em>: <a href=\"https:\/\/tasteofcountry.com\/country-artists-banned-grand-ole-opry\/\" target=\"_blank\">6 Country Stars Who Were Banned From the Grand Ole Opry<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;He Stopped Loving Her Today&#8221; earned Jones a Grammy Award, and Song of the Year titles at the ACM and CMA Awards. The song continued to rake in accolades as the years went on: The song was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2007, and it was preserved by the Library of Congress in the National Recording Registry in 2008.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/tasteofcountry.com\/tags\/alan-jackson\" target=\"_blank\">Alan Jackson<\/a> sang &#8220;He Stopped Loving Her Today&#8221; at Jones&#8217; funeral in 2013, and again at that year&#8217;s CMA Awards, the second time with <a href=\"https:\/\/tasteofcountry.com\/tags\/george-strait\" target=\"_blank\">George Strait<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Jones&#8217; gravestone in Nashville also bears the title of the song.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Watch Vince Gill Perform the No. 1 Grand Ole Opry Song<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Gill&#8217;s performance of &#8220;He Stopped Loving Her Today&#8221; was a rare treat for fans in the crowd.<\/p>\n<p>Until Friday, he&#8217;d never sung the song live before.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This is one of the most iconic records, songs, voices of all time. The great George Jones sang this song many years ago,&#8221; Gill said as he introduced it. &#8220;&#8230;So here&#8217;s my attempt. I&#8217;ve only sung this once live, and that was three hours ago.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Gill&#8217;s smooth, reverential rendition of &#8220;He Stopped Loving Her Today&#8221; did Jones justice, and paid tribute to a 100-year legacy of incredible country music on the Opry stage.<\/p>\n<p>As part of its 100th birthday celebration, the Opry released a special compilation album called\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Opry-100-Countrys-Greatest-Various\/dp\/B0FNKHSM12\" target=\"_blank\">Opry 100: Country&#8217;s Greatest Songs<\/a><\/em> earlier this year. That collection includes a &#8220;Full Circle Mix&#8221; of George Jones and Alan Jackson singing &#8220;He Stopped Loving Her Today.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class=\"photogallery-wrapper blog-photogallery \">\n<h2 class=\"photogallery-title\">31 Country Stars You Won&#8217;t Believe Aren&#8217;t Grand Ole Opry Members<\/h2>\n<div class=\"photogallery-description\">\n<div>There are 76 members of the Grand Ole Opry as of March 2025, but that doesn&#8217;t include 15 living CMA or ACM Entertainers of the Year and several Country Music Hall of Famers. <a href=\"https:\/\/tasteofcountry.com\/tags\/george-strait\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">George Strait,<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/tasteofcountry.com\/tags\/kenny-chesney\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Kenny Chesney <\/a>and <a href=\"https:\/\/tasteofcountry.com\/tags\/willie-nelson\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Willie Nelson<\/a> are three legends who rarely play the Grand Ole Opry. Why?<\/div>\n<p>That answer is often difficult to determine, but this list of stars you won&#8217;t believe aren&#8217;t members suggests reasons where appropriate. <\/p>\n<div><a href=\"https:\/\/www.opry.com\/artists\/membership\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Membership<\/a> into the Grand Ole Opry comes with an obligation to play the show frequently, but that&#8217;s often set aside (Barbara Mandrell is an inactive member, for example).
