The musician was reading Thomas Pynchon\u2019s Gravity\u2019s Rainbow<\/em> while creating his latest album, Baby<\/em>, an experience that proved to be more psychological than he expected<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n \n\tDijon<\/a> pushed himself to the brink while creating his acclaimed second studio album, Baby<\/em>. But it wasn\u2019t the music that sent him there \u2014 it was a postmodern novel about the creation of ballistic missiles in Europe at the close of World War II. In a recent interview with Pitchfork<\/a>, the musician revealed that a friend attempted to stage an intervention to stop him from reading Thomas Pynchon\u2019s Gravity\u2019s Rainbow<\/em> due to the adverse psychological effects it seemed to have on him.<\/p>\n \n\t\u201cI was having a really hard time with the record,\u201d Dijon said. \u201cLike, psychosis-level shit.\u201d His friend had warned him against Gravity\u2019s Rainbow<\/em>, saying, \u201cYou shouldn\u2019t do that, it\u2019s so paranoid.\u201d He turned out to be right. \u201cI was having mania,\u201d Dijon said. \u201cI was having all sorts of ups and downs and a true disbelief that I was supposed to continue to be making music.\u201d<\/p>\n
