On any given song, you might hear the English band skipping dexterously through post-punk, dub, funk, jangle, goth, post-rock, or something else, with three wizards on their instruments grooving away in lockstep. At the center of it all, vocalist Florence Shaw delivers an endless spoken-word monologue that sounds like it\u2019s coming from another planet entirely.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tIt\u2019s a delightfully odd combination that brought in excellent reviews for their 2021 debut, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-features\/dry-cleaning-band-interview-london-1139020\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>New Long Leg<\/em><\/a>, and their 2022 follow-up, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-album-reviews\/dry-cleaning-stumpwork-review-1234612802\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Stumpwork<\/em><\/a> (whose cover art won them a Grammy for Best Recording Package). But by this time last year, they were looking to shake things up on their next album. So they tried auditioning new producers. It didn\u2019t go very well at first.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cWe had some producers who, over Zoom, would be showing us their systems, like, \u2018I\u2019ve got two <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Empirical_Labs_Distressor\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Distressors<\/a>\u2026\u2019 and not talking about the songs we\u2019d sent them,\u201d says bassist Lewis Maynard. \u201cWe were quite lost. For a period of time, we spoke about producing it ourselves.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cThat goes to show just how lost we were,\u201d Shaw notes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cAnd then my dog was going to produce it, at some point,\u201d Maynard adds.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cShe\u2019s got two Distressors as well,\u201d jokes drummer Nick Buxton.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tShaw, Maynard, Buxton, and guitarist Tom Dowse have logged onto Zoom from their respective flats in South London to talk about their third album, <em>Secret Love<\/em>, out Jan. 9 on 4AD. Coming more than three years after <em>Stumpwork<\/em>, it\u2019s the best Dry Cleaning album yet, full of intriguing left turns and surprising new swerves that more than justify the months of studio exploration it took to get there.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Dry Cleaning - Hit My Head All Day\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Pk7V6zQFU6w?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tThe story of <em>Secret Love<\/em> starts more than a year ago, in the spring of 2024, when Dry Cleaning toured small clubs in the U.S. and Europe to celebrate a re-release of the <a href=\"https:\/\/shopusa.4ad.com\/products\/4ad0571-boundary-road-snacks-and-drinks-sweet-princess-ep\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">two EPs<\/a> that won them a cult fanbase in the late 2010s. \u201cWhen they first came out, I was so surprised that they found an audience,\u201d Shaw says. \u201cNot because I didn\u2019t think they were good enough or anything, but it was just such a bizarre turn of events. It was a shocking thing. So it gave a bit of an opportunity to feel proud of them.\u201d<\/p>\n<section class=\"brands-most-popular \/\/ editors-pick-module lrv-u-margin-tb-2 lrv-u-border-a-2 u-box-shadow-5-5 lrv-u-padding-lr-1 a-span1 u-padding-b-1@tablet u-overflow-hidden\">\n<h2 id=\"section-heading\" class=\"c-heading larva  lrv-u-text-align-center u-border-color-black a-font-theme-primary-xxs lrv-u-color-black lrv-u-text-transform-uppercase u-letter-spacing-0063 lrv-u-padding-t-050 u-padding-b-0375@tablet lrv-u-padding-b-050@mobile-max lrv-u-border-b-2\">\n<p>\t\tEditor\u2019s picks<\/p>\n<\/h2>\n<\/section>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tThat fall, they experienced a dizzying shift in scale when they played stadiums in Europe as an opening act for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/nick-cave\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/nick-cave\/\">Nick Cave<\/a>, one of their heroes. \u201cIt was more fun than you think it would be,\u201d Dowse says. \u201cYou think, how the hell are you going to fill that kind of venue with sound? And what you don\u2019t expect is, [the venues] sound fucking amazing. His crowd were very generous as well. We\u2019d always have quite a few thousand people down the front for our sets.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tIn between and around those two tours, they\u2019d begun working on new material without a clear goal in mind. Some songs came from their budding friendship with Wilco\u2019s Jeff Tweedy, who offered the use of his band\u2019s instrument-filled Chicago studio, the Loft, when Dry Cleaning were in town. \u201cI would characterize those as being not a million miles from what we already sounded like,\u201d Dowse says. \u201cMaybe with a slight Wilco bent to it, which is not surprising, as we were using all their equipment and their sound engineer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tOthers came from sessions in Dublin with members of the ferociously loud Gilla Band, who brought in a noisy industrial influence. \u201cWe wanted to work with them because we knew they would fuck things up quite a lot,\u201d Dowse says. \u201cThat was a really cool experience, because they just sort of took a hacksaw to everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<section class=\"brands-most-popular \/\/ recirculation-modules lrv-u-margin-tb-2 lrv-u-border-a-2 u-box-shadow-5-5 lrv-u-padding-lr-1 a-span1 u-padding-b-1@tablet u-overflow-hidden\">\n<h2 id=\"section-heading\" class=\"c-heading larva  lrv-u-text-align-center u-border-color-black a-font-theme-primary-xxs lrv-u-color-black lrv-u-text-transform-uppercase u-letter-spacing-0063 lrv-u-padding-t-050 u-padding-b-0375@tablet lrv-u-padding-b-050@mobile-max lrv-u-border-b-2\">\n<p>\t\tRelated Content<\/p>\n<\/h2>\n<\/section>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tWith close to 20 songs that felt miles apart and no idea how to bring them together, they looked for a producer who could solve the riddle. After rejecting Maynard\u2019s dog and several other candidates for the role, they eventually turned to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/cate-le-bon\/\" id=\"auto-tag_cate-le-bon\" data-tag=\"cate-le-bon\">Cate Le Bon<\/a>, the Welsh art-pop auteur who\u2019s helped bands including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-features\/deerhunter-bradford-cox-interview-new-album-779033\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Deerhunter<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-album-reviews\/wilco-cousin-review-1234834138\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Wilco<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-features\/horsegirl-chicago-new-album-interview-phonetics-1235210210\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Horsegirl<\/a> make daring creative leaps in recent years. Le Bon listened closely to what they shared with her and suggested a radical solution: starting over from scratch.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cIf someone had come on board and said, \u2018It\u2019s done,\u2019 we probably would\u2019ve gone with that. You know what I mean?\u201d Dowse says. \u201cBut Cate was adamant we do it all again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tThis past spring, they decamped along with Le Bon to an idyllic farmhouse-turned-studio in the Loire Valley region of northwestern France to give it a try, whittling the tracklist down to 11 songs that they re-recorded in full. \u201cIt\u2019s a bit like doing a jigsaw puzzle, but she\u2019s the only one that\u2019s got an idea of the finished picture in her head,\u201d Buxton says. \u201cShe\u2019s really good at that.\u201d<\/p>\n<section class=\"brands-most-popular \/\/ recirculation-modules trending-in-article lrv-u-margin-tb-2 lrv-u-border-a-2 u-box-shadow-5-5 lrv-u-padding-lr-1 a-span1 u-padding-b-1@tablet u-overflow-hidden\">\n<h2 id=\"section-heading\" class=\"c-heading larva  lrv-u-text-align-center u-border-color-black a-font-theme-primary-xxs lrv-u-color-black lrv-u-text-transform-uppercase u-letter-spacing-0063 lrv-u-padding-t-050 u-padding-b-0375@tablet lrv-u-padding-b-050@mobile-max lrv-u-border-b-2\">\n<p>\t\tTrending Stories<\/p>\n<\/h2>\n<\/section>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tLe Bon\u2019s suggestions included urging Shaw to actually <em>sing<\/em> emotionally direct songs like \u201cSecret Love\u201d and \u201cI Need You,\u201d instead of talking through them as she otherwise would have. \u201cSinging feels like a more vulnerable place for me, and that interested me,\u201d Shaw says. \u201cThe tender moments on the album come across that way because they are that. They are tender moments. They felt close to an overshare each time, really. Cate pushed to leave all of those things in, and I\u2019m glad that she did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tIt adds up to a breakthrough that feels like Dry Cleaning\u2019s defining statement, the album they\u2019ve been building up to since those first EPs defied all expectations in 2018 and 2019. Even now, Shaw says, they\u2019re pleasantly amused that the world has followed them this far. \u201cWe cannot get used to being a band,\u201d she says. \u201cI swear to God, we\u2019re never going to stop saying it. We\u2019re a band and people listen to us.
