I was 21. I\u2019d moved to New York two years earlier, and I loved coming back to New Orleans to visit my dad at his uptown home.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cJune! Meathead\u2019s on the phone,\u201d he called from the other room. He loved kidding around with me.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cHey, Meathead,\u201d I said into the phone.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cHarry? It\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/rob-reiner\/\" id=\"auto-tag_rob-reiner\" data-tag=\"rob-reiner\">Rob Reiner<\/a>.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tI don\u2019t remember everything he said \u2014 visions of Mike Stivic from <em>All in the Family<\/em> were buzzing through my head. I do remember him telling me about the new film he was working on, <em>Harry, This Is Sally<\/em> (as it was still being called then).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tI couldn\u2019t run fast enough to the other room to tell my dad that I\u2019d just been invited to Los Angeles by Mr. Reiner to play some solo piano underscoring for the film. I had no idea what that meant, but I couldn\u2019t get to L.A. fast enough.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tThe studio was massive \u2014 a classic L.A. soundstage that seemed bigger than a city block. At one end, a huge screen hung from the ceiling. Aside from that, the only other thing was a Steinway Concert Grand anchoring the middle of the room.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cLook at the screen,\u201d Mr. Reiner told me as I sat at the piano. \u201cWhen the scene starts, you\u2019ll see a green strip move across the screen. That\u2019s when you start.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cStart what?\u201d I asked. \u201cWhat am I playing?\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cAnything you want.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cHow will I know when to stop?\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cWhen the red strip reaches the end of the screen.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tHe disappeared into the control room, leaving me alone on piano island.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cOK,\u201d he said over the talkback mic. \u201cHere we go.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tI put my headphones on. When the scene began, there was something austere about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/billy-crystal\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/billy-crystal\/\">Billy Crystal<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/meg-ryan\/\">Meg Ryan<\/a>\u2019s performance. They were terrific, but there was space around them. As the green strip appeared and tracked across their faces, I understood: There was no music. Holy crap. This was my job.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tI placed my hands on the keys and waited for the strip to disappear. It was probably two seconds, but I had an eternity to decide precisely what I was going to play. I don\u2019t remember what Billy and Meg were discussing, but suddenly I found myself playing notes that needed to shadow their conversation. The red strip appeared at what felt like the perfect moment. It glided across and slipped away as Billy and Meg finished up, just as I played my last notes and chords. How did Mr. Reiner know that would work? Mr. Reiner guided me through each one, pushing and pulling me to connect with what was unfolding on the screen. I was scared of him \u2014 he was so precise with his vision \u2014 but he was also kind, patient, and clear.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tThe next assignment was to sing with the orchestra. I was originally asked to perform only one song (\u201cIt Had To Be You\u201d), but because of some contractual hiccups, I ended up singing and playing every song featured in the film.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tI remember \u201cWinter Wonderland.\u201d Ray Charles\u2019 performance was used in the film itself, but Mr. Reiner wanted me to play it on the soundtrack album. Let\u2019s move on,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tWho was this man? He was letting me sing and play anything I wanted. Was every film like this? Did every director work this way? Turns out, no. I could see Mr. Reiner in the control room through the glass as I sang. When the song ended, he spoke to me through the headphones.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cCan you end on the high note?\u201d he asked.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t<em>That\u2019s a high F. That\u2019s really high for me,<\/em> I thought. \u201cSure. No problem,\u201d I said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tI did another version, this time sucking up as much air as my lungs could hold right before the last note. I could see Mr. Reiner smiling as he pressed the talkback button.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cThat\u2019s it!\u201d he said. \u201cThat\u2019s the one!\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tThat night, I called my dad from my room at the Sunset Marquis. I held one side of my Sony Walkman headphones up to the phone and played the music for him. He loved it.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cWhat did Mr. Reiner think?\u201d he asked.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cI think he liked it,\u201d I said. I was giddy.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tRob Reiner was a gentleman \u2014 a brilliant, generous gentleman. I\u2019ll always remember him in the studio that day \u2014 loud and strong, precise and deliberate.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cIf you ever want to do anything in this business, do it yourself,\u201d he said. \u201cDon\u2019t expect anyone to do anything for you.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tTrue, unless it involved Rob Reiner. He did something for me \u2014 he changed my life\u00a0 \u2014 and I\u2019ll be forever grateful.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tThank you, Mr. Reiner.
