We were in a lounge on the edge of downtown Nashville \u2014 not far from Sweeney\u2019s home in neighboring Hendersonville. On a slow afternoon, before the happy hour crowd strolled in, Sweeney felt like talking. She does that a lot these days, as part of her second-act side gig as a country music deejay.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tBut 15 years ago, she was a country singer and songwriter, one being hailed as the genre\u2019s next savior. That may have been a heavy expectation, but she\u2019s clearly evolved into one of its vanguards. This is obvious even to casual listeners to Sweeney\u2019s <em>Sunny Side Up<\/em>, the SiriusXM show she hosts weekdays from 6 a.m. to noon on Willie\u2019s Roadhouse channel. The high-profile job constantly exposes her to the tiresome, never-ending debate over \u201cauthenticity\u201d in country music, and the Texas native can\u2019t help but weigh in.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cRight now, the conversation everybody is having is \u2018What\u2019s country? What\u2019s not country?\u2019 I am supportive of creative people, and any artist that wants to put out a record and call it whatever the hell they want to call it, I want them to succeed at it,\u201d she says. \u201cWho am I to tell someone what something is? My response to that is, this is my take on what I think country music should be.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tSpecifically, she\u2019s talking about <em>Rhinestone Requiem<\/em>, an album influenced by her musical heroes, among them Loretta Lynn, Merle Haggard, and Waylon Jennings. \u201cI hope and pray that my people that have passed on, they\u2019re looking down on me smiling, saying, \u2018Carry that torch, girl. It\u2019s also her declaration of freedom. Her last release, 2022\u2019s <em>Married Alone<\/em>, was a divorce album. This one is a snapshot of Sweeney\u2019s life now, with eight of the 10 tracks written or co-written by her. Only the Ben Chapman and Erin Enderlin composition \u201cIs Tonight the Night (I Make You a Memory)\u201d and Sweeney\u2019s version of Kasey Chambers\u2019 \u201cLast Hard Bible\u201d qualify as covers on <em>Rhinestone Requiem<\/em>. The rest of the songs started as notes in Sweeney\u2019s phone, which she was determine to keep universal.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cThis is just, like, from a piece in time,\u201d she says of the songs\u2019 themes. \u201cIt could have been way long ago or it could be 50 years from now. There\u2019s nothing dated in it, intentionally. That\u2019s what I love about old country records. There\u2019s nothing like email or cell phones in there, nothing that would date the song.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tSweeney filled the album with slices of life, both good and bad. The most striking example came a few years ago, when she found herself moving a safe out of her parents\u2019 house in Texas after a post-divorce stretch of living at home. She realized the only things in the safe were her grandmother\u2019s diamonds and her two divorce decrees. I know what I am as an artist. I know that I\u2019m opinionated,\u201d she says. \u201cI know that I have really good ideas, and I want to make sure that those ideas go forward without having to <em>fight<\/em> for those ideas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tShe\u2019d been fighting for those ideas since her 2011 breakthrough album <em>Concrete<\/em> spawned three Top 40 singles, including the heartbreaking \u201cFrom a Table Away.\u201d But a decade later, the fight had worn on Sweeney. She was jaded over the music industry and considering calling it a career. In the soul searching and praying that ensued, Sweeney asked for a sign. She got two. One of them was a call from the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum asking her to be a part of their 2023 \u201cAmerican Currents\u201d exhibit. The other was a text from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-country\/jeremy-tepper-outlaw-country-dead-obituary-1235040656\/\">late Jeremy Tepper<\/a>, the longtime format manager of Outlaw Country on SiriusXM. In early 2022, Tepper sent Sweeney a message asking her if she\u2019d ever consider working in radio. \u201cYour name\u2019s been getting tossed around in every meeting that we\u2019re in,\u201d she recalls Tepper texting.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tSweeney jumped at the chance. More than three years later, she\u2019s one of the leading voices for country music on SiriusXM, and arguably one of the most prominent figures in modern country radio.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cThis business has made me skeptical of people \u2014 the music part of this business,\u201d Sweeney says of her radio gig. \u201cBut that side of my career, which is a whole separate side, I feel like it\u2019s opened me up to a whole lot of criticism. People are like, \u2018Why are you in radio? You don\u2019t know anything about radio.\u2019 Well, I don\u2019t, but if you were given that opportunity, you would take it as well. And I\u2019m, according to my bosses, doing well. But I\u2019ve also made a lot of friends, and a lot of new artist friends.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tThe endorsement of Tepper, who died in 2024, is still motivating her. \u201cI feel like it\u2019s a very important job for me to not ever mess up. Tepper told me multiple times, \u2018I want this to help your career. I don\u2019t want you to just do radio. I\u2019m such a fan, and I want to see you succeed.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-instagram wp-block-embed-instagram\"\/>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tSweeney is ending 2025 with a pair of successes. Drayton Farley\u2019s \u201cTouch and Go,\u201d which he co-wrote with Sweeney and Dani Rose, was featured on an episode of Taylor Sheridan\u2019s <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/landman\/\" id=\"auto-tag_landman\" data-tag=\"landman\">Landman<\/a><\/em> series, topping the Shazam viral chart in the aftermath. (<em>Rolling Stone<\/em>\u2019s <em>Nashville Now<\/em> podcast named it one of its \u201cHear Now\u201d songs during a recent episode.) And she\u2019s also heading back to the Grand Ole Opry, playing the 100-year-old institution\u2019s Dec. 26 show and reminding everyone exactly who she is.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cI\u2019m a country singer.
