Nineteen eighty-six was a great\u00a0time to be an adventurous music fan. From pop-rock to thrash to hip-hop, there was something for everybody.<\/p>\n

Yet all of those\u00a0records paled in comparison to Bon Jovi<\/a>‘s star-making third album,\u00a0Slippery When Wet<\/a><\/em>, which soared to No. 1 and went on to sell more than 15 million copies in the U.S. alone.<\/p>\n Bon Jovi became poster boys for the glam metal scene, which\u00a0enjoyed meteoric success in 1986. Behind\u00a0Slippery When Wet<\/em>, bands such as Poison<\/a>, Cinderella<\/a>, Ratt<\/a> and Europe<\/a> also staked their claim for pop-metal supremacy.<\/p>\n Fans of more aggressive fare found plenty to sink their teeth into as well. Iron Maiden<\/a> and Judas Priest<\/a> both broke out the guitar synthesizers for the first time on\u00a0Somewhere in Time<\/a><\/em> and\u00a0Turbo<\/a><\/em>, respectively.\u00a0Three members of thrash’s “Big 4” \u2014 Metallica<\/a>, Megadeth<\/a> and Slayer<\/a> \u2014 also released career-defining albums that would go down in history as some of metal’s finest works.<\/p>\n But it wasn’t just the headbanging contingent that got their fill in 1986. Classic rock and pop-rock fans satiated themselves with\u00a0blockbuster new\u00a0releases from Paul Simon<\/a>, Tina Turner<\/a>, Prince<\/a>, Peter Cetera<\/a> and Steve Winwood<\/a>.
