\n\tKennedy Center<\/a> President Richard Grenell has threatened legal action against jazz musician Chuck Redd after Redd canceled<\/a> his scheduled Christmas eve concert over President Donald Trump<\/a>\u2019s appointed board\u2019s decision to rename the venue<\/a> after himself.<\/p>\n \n\tIn a letter obtained by The Associated Press<\/a><\/em> on Friday, Grenell likened Redd\u2019s decision to \u201cthe sad bullying tactics\u201d by some on the left.<\/p>\n \n\t\u201cYour decision to withdraw at the last moment \u2014 explicitly in response to the Center\u2019s recent renaming, which honors President Trump\u2019s extraordinary efforts to save this national treasure \u2014 is classic intolerance and very costly to a non-profit Arts institution,\u201d Grenell wrote. \u201cRegrettably, your action surrenders to the sad bullying tactics employed by certain elements on the left, who have sought to intimidate artists into boycotting performances at our national cultural center.\u201d<\/p>\n \n\tGrenell said that the letter served as \u201cofficial notice\u201d that \u201cwe will seek $1 million in damages,\u201d from Redd, calling his nixing of the concert a \u201cpolitical stunt.\u201d<\/p>\n \n\tRedd did not immediately respond to Rolling Stone<\/em>\u2019s request for comment.<\/p>\n \n\tFor more than two decades, the Kennedy Center \u2014 known formally as the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts before all the recent changes \u2014 has hosted the Christmas eve Jazz Jam. Redd has led the event since 2006.<\/p>\n \n\tA week prior to the scheduled Christmas eve performance, the center\u2019s board of trustees, who were handpicked by Trump, voted unanimously to rename the once venerable institution the Trump Kennedy Center<\/a>, a controversial (and possibly illegal<\/a>) decision.<\/p>\n \n\t\u201cWhen I saw the name change on the Kennedy Center website and then hours later on the building, I chose to cancel our concert,\u201d Redd told\u00a0the AP<\/a><\/em> on Dec. 24.<\/p>\n \n\tSince Trump\u2019s self-appointment as Kennedy Center chairman in early February,\u00a0at least 26 performances have been canceled<\/a>, including 15 by the scheduled acts themselves. Issa Rae canceled her Feb. 14 show, citing \u201can infringement on the values of an institution that has faithfully celebrated artists of all backgrounds through all mediums.\u201d On Feb. 13, Low Cut Connie, the Philadelphia rock and soul band fronted by Adam Weiner,\u00a0canceled their March 19 concert.<\/a>\u00a0<\/p>\n
