He\u2019s talking to me in late September, days after he premiered music from his album <em>Mr. Runaway<\/em> during a set at the behemoth Bourbon and Beyond festival in Louisville.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tMiller had been close to this position before, with an important distinction. The 11-track <em>Mr. Runaway<\/em> marks the second solo project for the Kentucky native \u2014 whose job playing drums for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/sturgill-simpson\/\" id=\"auto-tag_sturgill-simpson\" data-tag=\"sturgill-simpson\">Sturgill Simpson<\/a> often casts a shadow over Miller\u2019s own career. He recorded and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-features\/miles-miller-sturgill-simpson-drummer-solo-album-solid-gold-1234789789\/\">released<\/a> <em>Solid Gold<\/em> in 2023 with a solo tour that included dates opening for Tyler Childers and featured Miller in a traditional frontman spot, playing guitar and singing at the center of the stage. However, <em>Mr. Runaway<\/em> is full of musical and melodic curveballs. Miller decided any shows in the wake of the record needed to be full-band experiences led by him from behind the drums.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cThe only thing I really had to compare all of this to was \u2014 well, it was a couple of things,\u201d Miller says. \u201cOne was Sturgill\u2019s world, but the other one was my first record and touring off it. I was out front with a guitar, which is all well and good. That\u2019s the <em>way<\/em> you sing a song. But I struggled to find a groove with all that. This time around, I was singing and playing drums. I don\u2019t know why I put that off forever.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cJust immediately, I think the fans\u2019 perspective was, \u2018Oh, wow! How can he do that? It\u2019s incredible.\u2019 I think that when I see some shit like that, too. You\u2019ve got the wow factor. You have to sing completely different. You have to play completely different. I don\u2019t even really get to enjoy it because I\u2019m just working so damn hard to play the show.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Mr. Runaway\" width=\"1200\" height=\"900\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/vH-xlhMZafc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tWhen Miller released <em>Solid Gold<\/em>, Simpson was on a hiatus. He\u2019d taken a break from touring in 2021 and Miller considered pivoting to a solo career. But when Simpson returned in 2024 as Johnny Blue Skies, Miller remained behind the kit. It was a blessing for Miller. Around that time, he started writing a series of his own tunes, heavily focused on a recent breakup. Simpson took interest.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cHe was the one that kind of pulled all of this out of me in the beginning,\u201d Miller tells <em>Rolling Stone<\/em>. \u201cHe knew I wrote some songs, and he was always asking me what my notebook was looking like. He kind of got the train rolling.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tThe result was a record drawing heavily on funk and rock sounds and country lyrics alternating between processing breakup and solitude.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cI\u2019d been kind of all by myself for years,\u201d Miller says. \u201cI\u2019d moved back home to Kentucky for the winter, because I was kind of in between places. I\u2019d been in Texas for a little bit. I\u2019ve lived in Nashville for most of my adult life. The feeling was just like, \u2018I\u2019m back home. I\u2019m all alone. I\u2019ve run away from all these things that were kind of in my past life, and I\u2019m moving on.\u2019 A lot of it was just that \u2014 holed up in a house. As cliche as it is, you think about all the shit that you just went through, and put it to words. There\u2019s some moments of \u2018Fuck you,\u2019 and there\u2019s some moments of \u2018I miss you,\u2019 and all that\u2019s in between. It\u2019s smiling and dancing through the pain.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tMiller describes the record as edgier and funkier than his previous work. He and Simpson drew heavily upon the late J.J. Cale\u2019s influence during the production process, often featuring the double vocals that Cale embraced in his own music. And I went, \u2018I\u2019m just running away from all this. If I don\u2019t like something, I\u2019m just running away from it.\u2019 And I gave myself that nickname: Mr. Runaway. But it also just has this cockiness to it, about this guy who\u2019s a rambler and he\u2019s gotta keep on truckin\u2019. No matter how much someone begs him to stay, running away is what makes him feel alive. It is definitely autobiographical.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tAside from debuting the record at Bourbon and Beyond \u2014\u00a0during a set he described as starting with maybe 60 people in the crowd, \u201cand I probably knew 50 of them,\u201d and ending with a few hundred \u2014 Miller toured this fall as an opener for JJ Grey &amp; Mofro. He grew into his frontman role behind the drums and intends to build upon the experience. But this time, unlike 2023, he\u2019s not angling to leave Simpson\u2019s outfit and set out on his own. I want to do this as my own thing. I understand people think of me, if they ever do, as Sturgill\u2019s drummer. That\u2019s great, and that\u2019s what I am.
