In many cases, they even re-wrote lyrics to some of their most famous songs to shill soft drinks or beer. And he\u2019d had enough. \u201cAin\u2019t singing for Pepsi,\u201d Young wrote. \u201cAin\u2019t singing for Coke\/I don\u2019t sing for nobody\/Makes me look like a joke.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tThe song became his biggest hit in years, and it eventually won him Video of the Year at the MTV Video Music Awards. But it enraged some of his peers. \u201cI just don\u2019t think Neil Young should be setting himself up as rock\u2019s conscience,\u201d said Glenn Frey, who appeared alongside Don Johnson in a 1985 Pepsi ad. \u201cI don\u2019t know what\u2019s worse, making 17 albums that sound like demos, putting them out as finished product, and taking people\u2019s money for that or me taking $1 million from Pepsi. Right, Neil? Who\u2019s ripping off who? You haven\u2019t made a decent record since <em>Harvest<\/em>.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tClearly, Young hit a nerve. And to be fair to Frey, his music with the Eagles will live forever, while his Pepsi commercial is little more than an extremely dim memory to most people. That\u2019s the case for most pop star commercials from the Eighties. But thanks to the magic of YouTube, we\u2019ve gone back and resurrected some of the classics. Be warned, some of these are really, really weird. The place is packed with <em>American Psycho<\/em>-style yuppies. A woman is trying to figure out which Genesis song to play on the jukebox, even though \u201cTonight Tonight Tonight\u201d is already blaring. We periodically flash to Genesis performing this very song. Someone cracks a Michelob. A woman walks toward the camera and smiles seductively. We don\u2019t see any cocaine, but it\u2019s clearly everywhere.\u00a0Folks, it doesn\u2019t get more Eighties than this.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cringe Factor:<\/strong> Minimal. This is the studio rendition of \u201cTonight Tonight Tonight\u201d without any altered lyrics. Phil Collins doesn\u2019t interact with any of the characters or drink a Michelob himself. And this was all part of a tour sponsorship package. He takes a few swigs of Pepsi, feeds images of models into a machine, short circuits it by spilling the soft drink, and out of a chamber walks Tina Turner. Her explosive entrance transforms Bowie into a suave ladies\u2019 man, and they duet on an altered version of Bowie\u2019s 1983 hit \u201cModern Love\u201d where the lyrics go \u201cnow I know the choice is mine\u201d as opposed to \u201cgets me to the church on time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t<strong>Cringe Factor:<\/strong> Mild. Shamelessly ripping off the plot of <em>Weird Science<\/em> isn\u2019t cool, and it\u2019s weird hearing Bowie sing a Pepsi slogan, but these are two of the coolest people to ever live. We\u2019ll forgive them most anything. It\u2019s just a founding member of the Eagles engaged in an intense, grunt-y workout, and extolling the virtues of Holiday Spa Health Club. \u201cWhen I come to the gym, I come here for one reason: to work,\u201d he says. \u201cThat\u2019s why they call it a workout. When you\u2019re in the business of staying in shape, this is your office. So when you\u2019re in the office, take care of business.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t<strong>Cringe Factor:<\/strong> High. Frey was in excellent shape when they shot this, but it\u2019s edited together like a training sequence in <em>The Karate Kid.<\/em> They also apparently lacked the budget to license one of his songs. A group of young boys \u2014 including future <em>Fresh Prince of Bel-Air <\/em>star Alfonso Ribeiro \u2014 are trotting out their best MJ moves on the streets when they happen to come across Jackson and his brothers. The awed kids find themselves in a choreographed dance routine with their heroes as Jackson sings a modified rendition of \u201cBillie Jean.\u201d \u201cYou\u2019re a whole new generation, you\u2019re dancin\u2019 through the day,\u201d he sings. \u201cYou\u2019re grabbin\u2019 for the magic on\u2005the\u2005run\/You\u2019re a whole\u2005new generation, you\u2019re lovin\u2019 what you\u2005do\/Put a Pepsi in the motion\/The choice is up to\u205fyou,\u205fhey-ey.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t<strong>Cringe Factor:<\/strong> It\u2019s high when you consider this is from the shoot where Jackson suffered heinous burns on his scalp due to a major production snafu. They also wrote an oddly catchy little tune: \u201cPat\u2019s Dogs!\/The cook is never tired! Pat\u2019s Dogs!\/The steam is always fired.\u201d If not for YouTube, it would have been long forgotten.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t<strong>Cringe Factor: <\/strong>Low. There\u2019s a charm to low-budget, regional commercials.
