{"id":54667,"date":"2025-12-31T14:07:28","date_gmt":"2025-12-31T14:07:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/musicianvoice.com\/index.php\/2025\/12\/31\/kennedy-center-altered-rules-ahead-of-trump-inspired-name-change\/"},"modified":"2025-12-31T14:07:28","modified_gmt":"2025-12-31T14:07:28","slug":"kennedy-center-altered-rules-ahead-of-trump-inspired-name-change","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/musicianvoice.com\/index.php\/2025\/12\/31\/kennedy-center-altered-rules-ahead-of-trump-inspired-name-change\/","title":{"rendered":"Kennedy Center Altered Rules Ahead of Trump-Inspired Name Change"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tThe <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/kennedy-center\/\" id=\"auto-tag_kennedy-center\" data-tag=\"kennedy-center\">Kennedy Center<\/a> changed its bylaws earlier this year to limit voting to board members appointed by the president. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tIn a new report, <em>The Washington Post<\/em> <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/style\/2025\/12\/31\/kennedy-center-board-trustees-bylaws\/\" target=\"_blank\">confirmed<\/a> the performing arts center adopted a revised set of rules in May to specify that board members designated by Congress \u2014 known as ex officio members \u2014 could not vote or count toward a quorum. Only those who were presidentially-appointed by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/donald-trump\/\" id=\"auto-tag_donald-trump\" data-tag=\"donald-trump\">Donald Trump<\/a> would have their vote counted. This preceded a vote on Dec. 18 in which the board <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/trump-kennedy-center-everything-that-happend-2026-1235492341\/\">voted to change<\/a> the D.C. institution\u2019s name to the Donald J. Trump and the John F. Kennedy Memorial Center for the Performing Arts. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tThe Kennedy Center currently has 34 presidentially-appointed board members, including Trump as the chair, and 23 ex officio seats. Per federal law, ex officio members include the librarian of Congress, the mayor of Washington, D.C., the secretary of the Smithsonian Institution, and the majority and minority leaders of the Senate. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tAccording to the <em>Post<\/em>, the Kennedy Center\u2019s bylaws have not necessarily previously designated ex officio members as able to vote. However, the publication reported that the Center\u2019s most recent tax filings listed 59 \u201cvoting members\u201d of its governing body, which includes both general and ex officio members. A former Kennedy Center staffer\u00a0said ex officio members were \u201calways included in debate and discussion.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cTheoretically they could vote, but our practice was not to have them vote or count toward quorum,\u201d the staffer told the <em>Post<\/em>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tSeveral other revisions were made to the Center\u2019s bylaws in March, including the wording that general trustees \u201cserve at the pleasure of the President.\u201d The revisions also feature a provision saying the president can be appointed as the chief executive officer and can be compensated for the position. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tAlmost immediately after taking office again in January, Trump moved to take over the preeminent cultural institution. In an effort to make the Kennedy Center \u201cGREAT AGAIN,\u201d as he wrote on Truth Social back in February, Trump gutted the center\u2019s bipartisan board, installed a crony as interim executive director, and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/politics\/politics-news\/trump-kennedy-center-board-chairman-1235260546\/\">made himself chairman<\/a>. Many artists have canceled Kennedy Center concerts, while others have stepped down from advisory roles. Musician Chuck Redd, who\u2019s led the Kennedy Center\u2019s annual Christmas Eve Jazz Jam since 2006, opted to cancel it this year, saying, \u201cWhen I saw the name change on the Kennedy Center website and then hours later on the building, I chose to cancel our concert.\u201d (Grenell has since\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/kennedy-center-lawsuit-musician-canceled-christmas-concert-1235490941\/\">threatened<\/a>\u00a0to take legal action against Redd, demanding $1 million in damages.)\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tLast week, April McClain Delaney, a Democrative representative from Maryland, introduced legislation to remove Trump\u2019s name, while Joyce Beatty, a Democratic representative from Ohio, filed a lawsuit over the matter. Beatty\u2019s lawyer, Norman Eisen \u2014 a former White House ethics counsel under Barack Obama \u2014\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/12\/22\/us\/politics\/lawsuit-trump-name-removal-kennedy-center.html\">said<\/a>\u00a0the name change \u201cviolates the Constitution and the rule of law because Congress said this is the name. The show was broadcast on CBS on Dec. 23, however <em><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DSqFLgYD1VQ\/\">Programming Insider<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>reported preliminary Nielsen estimates of just 2.65 million viewers \u2014 down from 4.1 million in 2024.
