These include MTV Music, MTV 80s, MTV 90s, Club MTV, and MTV Live. As\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/consequence.net\/2025\/12\/mtv-music-channels-shut-down\/\" rel=\"nofollow\"><em>Consequence<\/em><\/a>\u00a0notes, MTV Music \u2014 which launched in 2011 \u2014 notably ended its run by airing the Buggles\u2019 \u201cVideo Killed the Radio Star,\u201d the first visual to air when MTV launched in the United States in 1981.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tMTV\u2019s parent company, Paramount Skydance, is also expected to shutter music-only channels in Australia, Poland, France, and Brazil. Reps for MTV in the U.S. did not immediately return a request for comment regarding the full slate of channels that are set to go dark.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tDespite axing much of its dedicated music programming, MTV\u2019s flagship channels are still expected to keep broadcasting in the U.K. and elsewhere. Like in the U.S., these channels primarily air <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/tv-movies\/tv-movie-lists\/worst-tv-network-decisions-1234796350\/mtv-gives-up-and-becomes-the-ridiculousness-channel-1234796785\/\">massively popular reality programs<\/a>, as opposed to music videos.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tThe changes at MTV come as Paramount Skydance aims to cut costs following its blockbuster (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/tv-movies\/tv-movie-news\/stephen-colbert-cancellation-reasonable-trump-pressure-1235458459\/\">and<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/politics\/politics-features\/elizabeth-warren-paramount-trump-settlement-1235392413\/\">controversial<\/a>) merger earlier this year. There have also reportedly been discussions about turning MTV into an online streaming service that could potentially rival Spotify or YouTube.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tThe decision to cut MTV\u2019s musical-only channels wasn\u2019t the only cost-cutting measure the Paramount took this year.
