\n\tBj\u00f6rk shared a note of solidarity with the people of Greenland<\/a> after Donald Trump and his admin revived<\/a> threats of taking over the country<\/a> following the capture of<\/a> Venezuelan president Nicolas Maduro<\/a>.<\/p>\n \n\t\u201cI wish all Greenlanders blessing in their fight for independence,\u201d Bj\u00f6rk wrote on Instagram<\/a> Monday (Jan. 5), adding: \u201cColonialism has repeatedly given me horror chills up my back, and the chance that my fellow Greenlanders might go from one cruel colonizer to another is too brutal to even imagine. \u2018\u00dar \u00f6skunni \u00ed eldinn,\u2019 like we say in Icelandic.\u201d (That phrase translates to \u201cFrom the ashes into the fire.\u201d)\u00a0<\/p>\n \n\tThough the Icelandic musician\u2019s allusion to the U.S.\u2019s threats was clear, much of Bj\u00f6rk\u2019s note actually focused on Greenland\u2019s relationship with Denmark. Greenland hasn\u2019t been a Danish colony since the 1950s, but it\u2019s still a semi-autonomous district of Denmark, with its own local government and two representatives in Danish parliament. Denmark also continues to control Greenland\u2019s foreign affairs and defense, and contributes more than half the country\u2019s public budget.\u00a0<\/p>\n \n\tIceland, Bj\u00f6k\u2019s home country, also has a colonial past with Denmark, dating back to the first half of the 20th century. Iceland became independent in 1944, with Bj\u00f6rk writing that her fellow citizens are \u201cextremely relieved that they managed to break from the Danish\u201d and \u201cdidn\u2019t lose our language.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n \n\tShe went on to share two harrowing stories about Denmark\u2019s control over Greenland. One referred to a lawsuit<\/a> over 140 Greenlandic women filed in 2024, accusing Denmark of fitting them with IUDs without their consent or knowledge in an effort to reduce Greenland\u2019s population. It\u2019s believed that nearly 4,500 women and girls were affected between 1966 and 1970.\u00a0<\/p>\n \n\t\u201cThey are my age and younger \u2026 childless,\u201d Bj\u00f6rk wrote.<\/p>\n
