Dacus herself was feeling some big jitters. \u201cI was so nervous, because I can\u2019t think of a higher-stakes stage that I\u2019ve been on,\u201d she says. \u201cYou can mess up your own things, but it\u2019s really not cool to mess up somebody else\u2019s thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tIn fact, Dacus nailed that moment with a stirring rendition of <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.zinnedproject.org\/materials\/bread-and-roses-song\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.zinnedproject.org\/materials\/bread-and-roses-song\/\">\u201cBread and Roses,\u201d<\/a> an early-20th-century anthem of the labor and women\u2019s suffrage movements. A couple of days later, she called <em>Rolling Stone<\/em> to take us behind the scenes of a historic day in New York.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tHer City Hall appearance, which was not announced until the day of the inauguration, came together in just a few weeks, after the mayor-elect\u2019s office reached out in early December. They went back and forth on what to perform \u2014\u00a0\u201cIt would have felt weird to get up and sing one of my own songs,\u201d she says \u2014\u00a0before Mamdani\u2019s team suggested the storied protest song they went with.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"\/>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tDacus was familiar with \u201cBread and Roses\u201d because of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breadandroses.org\/post\/boygenius-and-allison-russell-perform-an-outstanding-benefit-concert-at-saint-joseph-s-arts-society\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">performance<\/a> she did with Julien Baker and Phoebe Bridgers, her <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/boygenius\/\" id=\"auto-tag_boygenius\" data-tag=\"boygenius\">boygenius<\/a> bandmates, back in 2021 at a San Francisco benefit for the nonprofit organization of the same name. \u201cIt\u2019s such a beautiful sentiment,\u201d she says. \u201cThe idea that you\u2019re not just fighting for your sustenance \u2014\u00a0you\u2019re fighting for your joy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tAlthough Dacus is based in Los Angeles, she\u2019s one of many people around the country who found something inspiring in Mamdani\u2019s promise to work toward a better life for all New Yorkers. In September, ahead of the mayoral election, she brought the popular progressive candidate out as a surprise guest during her set at the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/zohran-mamdani-lucy-dacus-performs-all-things-go-sufjan-1235436712\/\">All Things Go<\/a> festival in Forest Hills, Queens, just a few months after he made a similar appearance at one of MJ Lenderman\u2019s shows in Brooklyn.<\/p>\n<section class=\"brands-most-popular \/\/ editors-pick-module lrv-u-margin-tb-2 lrv-u-border-a-2 u-box-shadow-5-5 lrv-u-padding-lr-1 a-span1 u-padding-b-1@tablet u-overflow-hidden\">\n<h2 id=\"section-heading\" class=\"c-heading larva  lrv-u-text-align-center u-border-color-black a-font-theme-primary-xxs lrv-u-color-black lrv-u-text-transform-uppercase u-letter-spacing-0063 lrv-u-padding-t-050 u-padding-b-0375@tablet lrv-u-padding-b-050@mobile-max lrv-u-border-b-2\">\n<p>\t\tEditor\u2019s picks<\/p>\n<\/h2>\n<\/section>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cI feel such love and joy in the crowd this evening, and this is what our city should feel like,\u201d Mamdani told the crowd at All Things Go. \u201cIt should be a city where trans New Yorkers are cherished, a city where our queer neighbors are celebrated, and a city where each and every New Yorker can be the fullest version of themselves. And it has to be a city that all of us can afford, whether you\u2019re an artist, or a dreamer, or someone who works the night shifts. And that city, that city is within reach, if we\u2019re willing to fight for it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tOn the frigid afternoon of the inauguration, Dacus walked onstage to join keyboardist Sarah Goldstone and looked out at the people assembled in front of City Hall. \u201cIt doesn\u2019t feel like that big of a crowd, actually,\u201d she says. \u201cIt\u2019s not even as many people as I\u2019d have at one of our concerts. But then, all of the cameras, you realize this is a global event.\u201d She tried not to think too much about that, and focused on visualizing the images that went with poet James Oppenheim\u2019s lyrics as she sang.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tAfter finishing the song, she exchanged a hug with New York\u2019s new first lady, visual artist Rama Duwaji. \u201cAnd on the way off the stage, I tried to fist-bump <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/bernie-sanders\/\">Bernie Sanders<\/a>, which maybe confused him,\u201d she adds. \u201cBut he said that I did a good job.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tShe also took the chance to chat with Broadway legend Mandy Patinkin, whose performance of \u201cSomewhere Over the Rainbow\u201d was another highlight of the inauguration. \u201cHis voice is so iconic to me,\u201d she says. (<em>Hamilton <\/em>star Javier Mu\u00f1oz and Punjabi Canadian musician Babbulicious were also part of the festivities.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tUltimately, Dacus thinks it\u2019s no coincidence that Mamdani\u2019s vision for New York connected with so many creative artists. \u201cWhen you make art, you realize that it\u2019s not a luxury,\u201d she says. \u201cPeople that make art know the value of having the time and presence to focus on your interests.\u201d That connects with the theme of \u201cBread and Roses,\u201d too: \u201cI think people need to not look at organizing or participating as something that is only going to be draining.
