From slave spirituals to civil rights-era <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/protest-songs\/\" id=\"auto-tag_protest-songs\" data-tag=\"protest-songs\">protest songs<\/a> to the YG and Kendrick Lamar songs that soundtracked the last decade of Black Lives Matter protests, musicians across genres tend to react to our country\u2019s horrors with music.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tIn the 48 hours since Renee Good was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/politics\/politics-news\/minneapolis-ice-shooting-what-we-know-1235495692\/\">killed by ICE agent<\/a> Jonathan Ross earlier this week, a number of musicians have written and released songs struggling to make sense of the cruelty and heinous display of state violence. All of them so far are folk-based and in alignment with social media attention spans: None are more than two minutes long. But each mourns for Good\u2019s life and decries the American tragedy that is her killing.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tThe following list is not exhaustive, and there are surely more songs to come, but here are five songs songs that have caught our attention:<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"jesse-welles-good-vs-ice\" class=\"heading larva \/\/   lrv-a-font-primary-l   \">\n\t\tJesse Welles, \u201cGood vs. Ice\u201d\t<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tWelles has become famous for his quickly turned-around topical tunes. And even if he\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-features\/jesse-welles-protest-songs-tiktok-politics-1235410873\/\">not a fan<\/a> of stating his partisan politics, \u201cGood vs. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/ice\/\" id=\"auto-tag_ice\" data-tag=\"ice\">Ice<\/a>\u201d expresses the outrage and hurt many Americans are feeling after watching footage of Good\u2019s killing. \u201cYou probably don\u2019t need to shoot someone in the face,\u201d Welles sings, \u201cto do the thing that you\u2019re calling a job.\u201d This is not the first time Welles has <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=61I4hlig78w\">called out<\/a> ICE in song.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Good vs. Ice\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/El0CLduLgew?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<h2 id=\"zach-schmidt-t-t-t-t-m-i-d-s-w-i-s-they-tried-to-tell-me-i-didn-t-see-what-i-saw\" class=\"heading larva \/\/   lrv-a-font-primary-l   \">\n\t\tZach Schmidt, \u201cT.T.T.T.M.I.D.S.W.I.S.\u201d (They Tried to Tell Me I Didn\u2019t See What I Saw\u201d)\t<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tThis ballad from the Nashville based singer-songwriter Zach Schmidt zeroes in on the fury and dissonance of trying to square the footage of Good\u2019s killing with the story being told by the current administration, which has attempted to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/politics\/politics-news\/maga-response-minneapolis-shooting-1235496289\/\">claim<\/a> Good committed an \u201cact of domestic terrorism.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<section class=\"brands-most-popular \/\/ editors-pick-module lrv-u-margin-tb-2 lrv-u-border-a-2 u-box-shadow-5-5 lrv-u-padding-lr-1 a-span1 u-padding-b-1@tablet u-overflow-hidden\">\n<h2 id=\"section-heading\" class=\"c-heading larva  lrv-u-text-align-center u-border-color-black a-font-theme-primary-xxs lrv-u-color-black lrv-u-text-transform-uppercase u-letter-spacing-0063 lrv-u-padding-t-050 u-padding-b-0375@tablet lrv-u-padding-b-050@mobile-max lrv-u-border-b-2\">\n<p>\t\tEditor\u2019s picks<\/p>\n<\/h2>\n<\/section>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-instagram wp-block-embed-instagram\"\/>\n<h2 id=\"odin-scott-coleman-a-song-for-renee-good\" class=\"heading larva \/\/   lrv-a-font-primary-l   \">\n\t\tOdin Scott Coleman, \u201cA Song for Renee Good\u201d\t<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tMany of the \u201cstraight to TikTok\u201d protest songs that respond to the news these days tend to be the type of talk-singing, viral-friendly, to-the-point tunes that do best on that platform. This song from West Coast singer-songwriter Odin Coleman takes a different sonic approach, conjuring centuries-old Appalachian traditions in this banjo broadside. The incident happened less than a mile from where George Floyd was killed 5 years ago. Growing up near the city, I thought Floyd\u2019s death, when I was 17, would be a catalyst for change. But now, with an even less controlled form of \u201cpolicing\u201d, in ICE it\u2019s clear so little has changed.
