When you ring the Pecos, Texas-based line, you won\u2019t find any musical snippets \u2014 just Mitski reading a quote from Shirley Jackson\u2019s chilling 1959 horror classic, <em>The Haunting of Hill House<\/em>. \u201cNo live organism can continue for long to exist sanely under conditions of absolute reality,\u201d she says. \u201cEven larks and katydids are supposed, by some, to dream.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tThat phantasmagoric quote sets the tone of Mitski\u2019s next record, which is out Feb. 27 via Dead Oceans. It\u2019s a \u201crich narrative whose main character is a reclusive woman in an unkempt house. Outside of her home, she is a deviant; inside of her home, she is free,\u201d according to the press release, which is purposely scant on the details \u2014 although the phone website features texts that reference white cats, pies, and <em>Grey Gardens<\/em>, the iconic documentary about a mother and daughter named Edie and their reclusive, glamorously decaying life.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tInstead of laying out her vision in too many words, the musician welcomes us into her world with the first single and accompanying video, \u201cWhere\u2019s My Phone?\u201d It\u2019s based on another mind-bending novel by Jackson, 1962\u2019s <em>We Have Always Lived in the Castle<\/em>.
