John Mellencamp<\/a> has opened up about a performance at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame<\/a> that left him \u201ctotally humiliated.\u201d<\/p>\n It was 1995 and Mellencamp was recruited to be part of a special celebration opening the Hall\u2019s museum in Cleveland. The star-studded event featured a collection of rock icons, including Bob Dylan<\/a>, Bruce Springsteen<\/a>, Aretha Franklin<\/a> and the Kinks<\/a>. Mellencamp was tabbed for a duet with Johnny Cash<\/a>, an experience he recalled during a recent appearance on the Joe Rogan Experience<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n \u201cWe were standing around getting ready to do soundcheck and there was a whole bunch of people playing,\u201d Mellencamp remembered. \u201cAnd the Eagles<\/a> were on soundchecking and they were taking forever because Don Henley<\/a> is a perfectionist. Everything’s got to be just right. And I was standing with John and June [Carter Cash] and John was getting irritated because we were like 40 minutes [late].\u201d<\/p>\n READ MORE: <\/strong>John Mellencamp Albums Ranked Worst to Best<\/a><\/p>\n By the time the men finally got to soundcheck, Cash was in a foul mood. \u201cHe had a f—ing temper,\u201d Mellencamp recalled. \u201cYou didn’t f— with John Cash.\u201d As such, Mellencamp suggested they skip practicing their duet of \u201cRing of Fire.\u201d \u201cI know that song. It’s easy,\u201d he insisted to Cash. “I got it.” In hindsight, the decision wasn\u2019t wise.<\/p>\n At the Hall of Fame concert the next night, Cash welcomed Mellencamp to the stage as planned. However when they began to play \u201cRing of Fire,\u201d something went wrong.<\/p>\n \u201cHe started the song. \u2018I fell into\u2026\u2019<\/em> I didn’t realize that he had changed the f—ing key from him smoking to a lower key.
