He had dreamed of going to the Super Bowl, and on Feb. 8, it finally happened \u2014 just not the way he planned.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tGarcia was going to take the field as Bush Number D83, joining about 400 other performers dressed like sugar-cane grass in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/bad-bunny\/\" id=\"auto-tag_bad-bunny\" data-tag=\"bad-bunny\">Bad Bunny<\/a>\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/bad-bunny-super-bowl-performance-1235513007\/\">Super Bowl halftime-show<\/a> performance. \u201cI always imagined walking out of the tunnel for the Super Bowl as a football player,\u201d Garcia says on a Zoom call. The moment was just as powerful as his fantasy:\u00a0\u201cSeeing all the cameras flashing, the cheers of the crowd \u2026 it fulfilled my childhood dream.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tGarcia makes a point to give credit where it\u2019s due. \u201cI got to give all thanks to Bad Bunny,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tBad Bunny\u2019s historic performance won praise for its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-latin\/bad-bunny-super-bowl-meaning-1235513218\/\">detailed storytelling<\/a> and intricate set design. But the tall, tree-like structures, which turned out to be actual people, have drawn tons of interest. As soon as attendees inside the stadium posted videos of the bushes moving, the <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/LudwigAhgren\/status\/2020673287609778527?s=20\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">internet<\/a> went into a <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Popeyes\/status\/2020918570989842887?s=20\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">frenzy<\/a>. There are <em>already<\/em> people claiming the \u201cBad Bunny bush\u201d as a <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/AccessBadBunny\/status\/2020889006137880706?s=20\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Halloween costume<\/a>. (Guys, it\u2019s February.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cI am absolutely shocked by the reaction that it\u2019s been getting,\u201d Garcia says. \u201cPeople are loving us grass people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tWhile the bush people have delighted the internet, the move to have human performers rather than props stems from a logical response. Levi\u2019s Stadium, which has a real-grass field rather than turf, limits the amount of carts that can be brought on in order to protect the grass. The solution? People, of course. In January, a <a href=\"https:\/\/bck.lt\/roles\/1764\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">casting call<\/a> for field cast members was posted by live events staffing agency Backlit. It made sure to list a height requirement and note that the role was \u201cnot a dancing\u201d one. Maybe the odds of me getting [the role] are higher because I\u2019m so close,\u201d he recalls. After submitting the required body measurements and headshots, Garcia was notified he made the cut and would join the field cast.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tBut he couldn\u2019t have expected just what that entailed \u2014 that is, until his first day of rehearsal. \u201cThey said, \u2018You guys are going to be a meme for a long time,\u2019\u201d Garcia says. \u201cI remember the first day all of us got to see the costumes in person.\u2026 It was a mix of shock, laughter, and excitement.\u201d Even the costume design, which featured a 35- to 40-pound piece that rested on the performers\u2019 shoulders didn\u2019t deter Garcia. \u201cIt was heavier than we expected, but that wasn\u2019t going to stop us from pulling through to get this show on the road,\u201d he says, adding, \u201cWe were going to get this done for Bad Bunny no matter what.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tThat determination only intensified on show day, which Garcia walked <em>Rolling Stone<\/em> through.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-tiktok wp-block-embed-tiktok\"\/>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t<strong>Wake Up \u2013 7 a.m.<br \/><\/strong>From when I woke up until showtime, I was just telling myself, \u201cDon\u2019t be nervous, enjoy the moment.\u201d By the time we got on the buses to get transported to the stadium, everyone\u2019s energy was sky-high. Everyone was singing, dancing on the bus. You couldn\u2019t help but think to yourself, \u201cMan, it\u2019s impossible to be nervous right now.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t<strong>Arrival \u2013 12 p.m.<br \/><\/strong>We ended up getting to Levi\u2019s at around noon so that we could go through any last-minute things that we needed to talk about. It\u2019s a moment I never thought I was going to be able to have.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t<strong>\u201cPlaces, Everyone!\u201d \u2013 5:00 p.m.<\/strong><br \/>It might\u2019ve looked chaotic to people from the outside looking in, but everyone knew the spot they needed to go to. As far as trying to navigate through the bushes to get to your spot, that might\u2019ve been the most difficult thing but we rehearsed going from the tunnel to our spots multiple times, so it became easy. We also had the understanding that the halftime is only so long, so let\u2019s get moving.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tThe best way I could describe where I was, you know the scene where Bad Bunny put his arms down on the main stage and fell backwards? I was right there in the front row and he fell right in front of me.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t<strong>\u201cShowtime!\u201d \u2013 5:13 p.m.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tThe crew made jokes saying, \u201cThere\u2019s no wind in Puerto Rico. You guys got to stand still.\u201d It was definitely hard to do because you love the music, you\u2019re seeing the dancers in front of you, you kind of just groove a little bit. It\u2019s hard not to dance along with them. Some bushes got caught up in the moment like, \u201cYou know what? I\u2019m at the Super Bowl. I\u2019m going to move a little bit.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tI had to face away, but if I turned my head enough, there were gaps in the bushes where I could see what was going on perfectly. But I definitely fed off the energy of the audience when I faced the stands. Watching people have their phones out, screaming, dancing in the stands, seeing thousands of people just get into the performance, it was just as good as watching Bad Bunny.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t<strong>Surprises Guests: 5:15 p.m.<br \/><\/strong>Through the runthroughs, we ended up seeing who the guest performers were ahead of time. As far as the guests at La Casita, we had no idea who was going to be there until show day. We had hopes and guesses, but seeing them was an amazing shock.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tI remember being on the field and hearing the crowd pop when Lady Gaga came out. The energy was insane. The crowd roared when they saw her, just as I hoped they would.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t<strong>Flag Showcase: 5:21 p.m.<\/strong><br \/>The moment where all the flags came out of all the different countries, and Bad Bunny was naming them right there on camera. You couldn\u2019t help but feel pride when he named yours. I saw a little Mexican flag popping up [in the buses]. I\u2019m like, \u201cThere we freaking go. This is what I love to see.\u201d It\u2019s those little gestures where people who are watching at home, they see it. That was one of the <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/MaddySkye\/status\/2020962838827745721?s=20\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">best posts <\/a>that I saw on the internet the last couple days.\u00a0 Despite us being from so many different walks of life, we all felt connected. We all felt included. We all felt special, and Bad Bunny did that for us. No matter what I do moving forward, nothing can top this.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cThat\u2019s a Wrap!\u201d \u2013 5:25 p.m.<\/strong><br \/>After the show was over, all the tall grass bushes had to walk back inside the tunnel and we left the stadium. We had to go back to the buses after the halftime show to return to the location we initially met because that\u2019s where all of our cars were parked. We were able to keep parts of our costumes. I wanted to take the whole thing home, but it would\u2019ve been hard to fit that on the bus.
