\n\tBad Bunny<\/a>\u2019s Super Bowl halftime show continues to live rentfree in the minds of Republican lawmakers and conservative commentators. Plenty of right-wingers were outraged<\/a> that the NFL tapped the Puerto Rican star for the show, and criticized<\/a> the Spanish-language performance in real time. The GOP isn\u2019t letting it go, and has since called for multiple investigations into those responsible, while making a hilarious show of translating and dissecting Bad Bunny lyrics in public\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tIt started on Monday morning. Rep. Andy Ogles<\/a> (R-Tenn.) wrote<\/a> a letter to the House Committee on Energy Commissions, calling for a formal inquiry into the NFL and NBCUniversal over their \u201cprior knowledge, review, and approval of indecent content\u201d from Apple Music\u2019s halftime show.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThe Apple Music Super Bowl LX Halftime Show was pure smut, brazenly aired on national television for every American family to witness. Children were forced to endure explicit displays of gay sexual acts, women gyrating provocatively, and Bad Bunny shamelessly grabbing his crotch while dry-humping the air.\u201d Ogles wrote. \u201cThe performance\u2019s lyrics openly glorified sodomy and countless other unspeakable depravities.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tOgles claimed in a post on X<\/a> that the show \u201cdepicted gay pornography\u201d (we couldn\u2019t find any) and that the performance was \u201cconclusive proof that Puerto Rico should never be a state.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tRep. Randy Fine<\/a> (R-Fla.), meanwhile, has called for the Federal Communication Commission to investigate. Fine claimed on X<\/a> that the \u201cdisgusting halftime show was illegal\u201d and that had Bad Bunny \u201csaid these lyrics \u2014 and all of the other disgusting and pornographic filth in English on live TV, the broadcast would have been pulled down and the fines would have been enormous.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cPuerto Ricans are Americans and we all live by the same rules,\u201d Fine wrote, adding that he would be sending the FCC a letter demanding \u201cdramatic action, including fines and broadcast license reviews, against the NFL, NBC, and \u2018Bad Bunny.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tRep, Mark Alford (R-Mo.) chimed in on Real America\u2019s Voice on Tuesday, claiming<\/a> that while he doesn\u2019t \u201cspeak fluent Spanish\u201d the \u201clyrics from what we\u2019ve seen from Bad Bunny are very disturbing.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cWe have a lot of questions for the entities that broadcast this and we\u2019ll be talking with Brendan Carr from the FCC,\u201d he added. \u201cThis could be much worse than the Janet Jackson wardrobe malfunction.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tConservatives running to the FCC to complain about the moral turpitude of Super Bowl halftime show performances is practically an annual tradition. Kendrick Lamar\u2019s record-breaking performance last year drew 125 complaints<\/a>, including accusations that the rapper engaged in \u201cvulgarity\u201d and that Serena Williams\u2019 guest appearance \u2014 in which she performed a Crip Walk dance \u2014 glorified \u201cgang\u201d affiliations. Rihanna\u2019s 2023 show was also met with FCC complaints<\/a>, including hysterics that \u201ctwerking should rank up there with the F bomb,\u201d and claims that her backup dancers white suits were intended to represent sperm. In 2016, the FCC was flooded<\/a> with messages complaining that Beyonc\u00e9\u2019s guest appearance for Bruno Mars was \u201cno different than white people wearing KKK attire.\u201d Shakira and Jennifer Lopez (with a cameo by Bad Bunny) received over 1,300 complaints for their 2020 performance.<\/p>\n

\n\tCongress members attempting to crack down on a performer like they have against Bad Bunny marks a new front of the long-running culture war against Super Bowl performers.<\/p>\n

\n\tLike scores of popular artists before him, including many who have performed at Super Bowls, Bad Bunny sings about women, grinding (on your own and with someone else), having lots of girlfriends but never having a wedding (although he held a real one on Sunday<\/a>), love, loss, and the many great things about the place you are from. Like your average NFL cheerleading team, his backup dancers wore small outfits and gyrated and even twerked a little bit.<\/p>\n

\n\tIf you\u2019re noticing a pattern by which the pearl-clutching masses attack performers with furious claims of vulgarity, you might be onto something. Republicans \u2014 led by Turning Point USA \u2014 hosted an anti-halftime show<\/a> on Sunday, stocked with an all-white, English-speaking lineup fronted by Kid Rock. The 55-year-old artist \u2014 who has been arrested multiple times and accused of assault<\/a> \u2014 rapped his song \u201cBawitdaba,\u201d which includes family-friendly references to \u201ctopless dancers,\u201d \u201chookers all trickin\u2019 out in Hollywood,\u201d meth, porn, and more. Someone should let the FCC know.<\/p>\n

\n\tOne of the other chief complaints conservatives have leveled against Bad Bunny is that he sings almost entirely in Spanish. How were they supposed to understand him in real time without subtitles? One could wonder the same about Donald Trump, as Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) pointed out this week. \u201cI barely know what Trump\u2019s saying half the time. So, I feel him,\u201d she said<\/a> responding to the president\u2019s trashing of Bad Bunny\u2019s performance.<\/p>\n

\n\tDespite the meltdown over Bad Bunny\u2019s performance, the halftime show scored big ratings<\/a>, ranking as the fourth most-watched in halftime history. It has received generally positive reviews both in the United States and abroad. We do this every year, and at this point if Republicans saw a halftime show that didn\u2019t send them into a moralistic conniption, it might be a sign to retire the event in its entirety.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
