Close listeners will recognize the late actor\u2019s vocals as an outtake from the long-running cartoon band\u2019s 2005 masterpiece, <em>Demon Days<\/em>. \u201cI just thought, if we\u2019re going to talk about the subject of death, I need some people who are dead to help me talk about it,\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/damon-albarn\/\" id=\"auto-tag_damon-albarn\" data-tag=\"damon-albarn\">Damon Albarn<\/a>, sitting beside visual collaborator <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/jamie-hewlett\/\" id=\"auto-tag_jamie-hewlett\" data-tag=\"jamie-hewlett\">Jamie Hewlett<\/a> on a Zoom call from southwest England. \u201cSomehow they know more about it than me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tThey made this album in the wake of some major personal losses and a pivotal trip to India that filled them with new ideas for animated characters Russel (drums), Murdoc (bass), Noodle (guitar), and 2-D (vocals). Just a few days later, on Feb. 26, they\u2019ll bring their immersive <a href=\"https:\/\/houseofkong.gorillaz.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">House of Kong<\/a> exhibition to L.A. after a successful London run. (They hint that there may be more U.S. Gorillaz shows coming this fall.) Jamie, after <em>Plastic Beach<\/em>, changed his life quite dramatically and moved to France, and that was quite a cataclysm in our relationship at the time. But we managed to completely find each other again. And I suppose going to India was the pinnacle of that: Jamie and Damon, Part Two. Reconciliation and the renewing of the vows.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t<strong>Hewlett: <\/strong>We found ourselves on a very similar page. Damon\u2019s father passed away, and my father passed away 10 days later. I mean, aside from all the colonial history, someone like me grew up in a terraced house in East London next to an Indian family. It\u2019s very much part of being English, is Indian culture, whether it be Hindu, Muslim, or Sikh. I definitely was listening to Ravi Shankar more than the Beatles when I was a kid.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t<strong>What was it like to be there while you were grieving? Did you find it inspiring?<\/strong><br \/><strong>Hewlett: <\/strong>Just visiting [the ancient city of] Varanasi was quite an experience, seeing the funeral pyres. You just sort of allow it to wash over you, and maybe some of it infuses and then some of it haunts you.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t<strong>When did you come up with the idea of including all these voices of people we\u2019ve lost?<\/strong><br \/><strong>Albarn: <\/strong>In the original piece of paper, the original Gorillaz Manifesto written in 1999 by Jamie and I when we were sharing a flat, the character of Russel was able to bring forth the voices of dead musicians.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t<strong>Hewlett: <\/strong>Great idea. It took 25 years to actually use it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t<strong>You recently performed the first three Gorillaz albums live in London. Did you enjoy looking back on those projects?<\/strong><br \/><strong>Albarn: <\/strong>I don\u2019t get any pleasure out of looking back on anything.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t<strong>Hewlett: <\/strong>We\u2019re very much about what\u2019s next. What\u2019s next is exciting.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t<strong>Albarn: <\/strong>I feel like if people start telling you how great you were, there\u2019s something terribly missing in your life. Do you know what I mean?<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t<strong>Hewlett: <\/strong>Yeah. And if you\u2019re living off something you did 25 years ago because you haven\u2019t done anything new, then that\u2019s a shame.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t<strong>Did you learn anything new about those early Gorillaz projects when you performed them, though?<\/strong><br \/><strong>Albarn: <\/strong>They didn\u2019t have any lyrics! The songs on the first album, the lyrics that they had were just weird. And even the weird stuff makes sense now. That shows you how mad the world is now. \u201cHey, we\u2019re going to have a character who has dead people come out of his head, and the record\u2019s not going to mean anything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t<strong>Hewlett: <\/strong>That\u2019s not even a crazy idea these days. My oldest son keeps telling me, \u201cYou\u2019ve got to watch it, Dad.\u201d Even if he\u2019s 30, he likes animation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t<strong>Albarn: <\/strong>I thought you had to have kids to watch that. I don\u2019t think you can watch that on your own. It\u2019s too weird.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t<strong>But it\u2019s funny, isn\u2019t it? You guys had this out-there idea of a cartoon band all those years ago, and now that\u2019s the biggest thing in the world.<\/strong><br \/><strong>Albarn: <\/strong>[<em>Laughs dryly.<\/em>] Between that and the fucking <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-features\/abba-voyage-residency-reunion-1352928\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-features\/abba-voyage-residency-reunion-1352928\/\">ABBA hologram show<\/a>, there\u2019s really nothing left of our ideas. All have been taken and monetized in an extreme way.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t<strong>Hewlett: <\/strong>I think that the fact that we are an animated band has helped just a little bit. Young people go, \u201cWhat\u2019s that? I love that animation. I\u2019m working on something.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t<strong>Albarn: <\/strong>They need to become cubist.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t<strong>Hewlett:<\/strong> Oh, that would be great. Wow.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t<strong>Albarn: <\/strong>Murdoc becomes a green rectangle [<em>laughs<\/em>].<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t<strong>What do you both think about the use of AI in art?<\/strong><br \/><strong>Hewlett: <\/strong>Well, for me personally, I wouldn\u2019t use it in my work. But at the same time, AI, if you\u2019re using it in the art world, is a tool. Just like when Photoshop arrived on the scene. It\u2019s what do you do with it really that matters.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t<strong>Albarn: <\/strong>I don\u2019t know how to use it, so I don\u2019t have that problem.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t<strong>Hewlett: <\/strong>I\u2019ve seen artists who use it really well. But there\u2019s a lot of people who know how to tap in a command into a computer and get a picture out of it, and they consider themselves to be artists, which is a little bit far-fetched for me.\u2026 Part of the reason you fall in love with an artist\u2019s work is because it\u2019s <em>their<\/em> work. It\u2019s their vision, their story, and a computer\u2019s just harvesting the information from the entire world. So it\u2019s not the same thing, is it? You can\u2019t fall in love with it. It\u2019s not like looking at a Van Gogh painting or a David Hockney and being reduced to tears.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t<strong>Albarn: <\/strong>I think it\u2019s too soon to say whether we can fall in love with it. It\u2019s like Mao, when he was asked about the French Revolution, he said, \u201cIt\u2019s too soon to tell.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t<strong>Damon, is it true that you don\u2019t even own a phone?<\/strong><br \/><strong>Albarn: <\/strong>That\u2019s right. It\u2019s easy. You just lose it one day and don\u2019t get another one.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t<strong>What about streaming? Do you listen to music that way?<\/strong><br \/><strong>Albarn: <\/strong>I\u2019ve never streamed anything in my life.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t<strong>Looking at the bigger picture, you\u2019ve both been eloquent voices for cross-cultural understanding over the years. Do you think the world is heading in the right direction these days?<\/strong><br \/><strong>Hewlett:<\/strong> We\u2019ve been lucky that we\u2019ve traveled a lot, so we\u2019ve seen the world and we\u2019ve had the experience of other cultures, and we\u2019ve benefited from it hugely. You grow as a human being by accepting other people\u2019s beliefs and cultures\u2026. I guess the answer is we\u2019re a bit concerned, but trying to be positive about it. Especially on this new album, the experience of working with many cultures coming together to make a beautiful record \u2014 it wouldn\u2019t be as beautiful if it was just a couple of English guys with their mates.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t<strong>That\u2019s always been an important part of Gorillaz, bringing together different points of view, hasn\u2019t it?<\/strong><br \/><strong>Albarn: <\/strong>It\u2019s the essence of it, really. I mean, for me, when I shifted worlds from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/blur\/\" id=\"auto-tag_blur\" data-tag=\"blur\">Blur<\/a> to Gorillaz, which was quite a dramatic gear change \u2026 that was everything about it. It had to have that community, because we\u2019re obscured by the cartoons. The only way there could be a real sense of a human interaction was with the people we work with.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t<strong>All these years later, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-features\/blur-new-album-ballad-darren-1234775786\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-features\/blur-new-album-ballad-darren-1234775786\/\">Blur<\/a> can play huge shows in Europe, but Gorillaz is still much more known here in the U.S. How do you feel about that these days?<\/strong><br \/><strong>Albarn: <\/strong>We did feel at Coachella, when we came over with Blur [in 2024], that maybe it was a slight mismatch, us being at that festival.
