According to his wife, Duvall passed away in Virginia on Sunday. He was 95 years old.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo the world,\u201d Duvall\u2019s wife, Luciana Pedraza, said in a statement, \u201dhe was an Academy Award-winning actor, a director, a storyteller. To me, he was simply everything. His passion for his craft was matched only by his deep love for characters, a great meal, and holding court. For each of his many roles, Bob gave everything to his characters and to the truth of the human spirit they represented. In doing so, he leaves something lasting and unforgettable to us all. Thank you for the years of support you showed Bob and for giving us this time and privacy to celebrate the memories he leaves behind.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Born in California in 1931, Duvall served in the Army during the Korean War, then studied theater\u00a0in New York City under the famous acting teacher Sanford Meisner alongside future stars like James Caan and Dustin Hoffman. He appeared in many of the period\u2019s greatest films \u2014 including\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/screencrush.com\/tags\/the-godfather\/\">The Godfather<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0<em>The Godfather Part II<\/em>,\u00a0<em>M*A*S*H<\/em>, <em>Network<\/em>, and\u00a0<em>Apocalypse Now.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>In\u00a0<em>The Godfather\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0<em>The Godfather Part II<\/em>, Duvall played Tom Hagen, the consigliere and lawyer to Vito Corleone and the Corleone family. Duvall reprised the role for director Francis Ford Coppola two years later, in\u00a0<em>The Godfather<\/em>\u00a0<i>Part II.\u00a0<\/i>The first <i>Godfather<\/i> earned Duvall the first of his\u00a0seven Academy Award nominations.<\/p>\n<p>Although Duvall had many memorable roles across a decades-long career, his most famous performance\u00a0arguably\u00a0came in another Coppola movie, 1979\u2019s\u00a0<em>Apocalypse Now.\u00a0<\/em>He only had a handful of minutes of screen time as the\u00a0merciless Lt. Kilgore,\u00a0but he made them count. His delivery of the famous line \u201cI love the smell of napalm in the morning\u201d went down in history as one of the great quotes in film history<\/p>\n<p>Duvall earned his second Oscar nomination for\u00a0<em>Apocalypse Now<\/em>, but he didn\u2019t win an Academy Award until four years later, when he starred in Bruce Beresford\u2019s soft-spoken drama\u00a0<em>Tender Mercies.\u00a0<\/em>Playing a washed-up country singer, Duval\u2019s Mac Sledge tries to clean up his life and begins a relationship with a Texas widow. This scene, between Duvall and co-star Tess Harper, is another\u00a0quietly devastating career highlight.<\/p>\n<p>This is just a small sampling of Duvall\u2019s greatest moments onscreen; a full accounting wouldn\u2019t take 95 years, but it\u2019d come pretty close.\u00a0Duvall was also nominated for Oscars for his work in\u00a0<em>The Great Santini<\/em>,\u00a0<em>The Apostle<\/em>,\u00a0<em>A Civil Action<\/em>, and 2015\u2019s\u00a0<em>The Judge<\/em>, and his other notable films include George Lucas\u2019\u00a0<em>THX 1138<\/em>,\u00a0<em>The Outfit<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Days of Thunder<\/em>, Ron Howard\u2019s\u00a0<em>The Paper<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Sling Blade<\/em>, and\u00a0<em>Deep Impact.\u00a0<\/em>His final onscreen role came in 2022\u2019s\u00a0<em>The Pale Blue Eyes \u2014\u00a0<\/em>exactly 50 years after his debut in\u00a0<em>To Kill a Mockingbird.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The man had an incredible career and produced an\u00a0enviable body of work.
