Perennial Hollywood star and Academy Award winner Robert Duvall<\/a> has died. According to his wife, Duvall passed away in Virginia on Sunday. He was 95 years old.<\/p>\n

\u201cTo the world,\u201d Duvall\u2019s wife, Luciana Pedraza, said in a statement, \u201dhe was an Academy Award-winning actor, a director, a storyteller. To me, he was simply everything. His passion for his craft was matched only by his deep love for characters, a great meal, and holding court. For each of his many roles, Bob gave everything to his characters and to the truth of the human spirit they represented. In doing so, he leaves something lasting and unforgettable to us all. Thank you for the years of support you showed Bob and for giving us this time and privacy to celebrate the memories he leaves behind.\u201d<\/p>\n

Born in California in 1931, Duvall served in the Army during the Korean War, then studied theater\u00a0in New York City under the famous acting teacher Sanford Meisner alongside future stars like James Caan and Dustin Hoffman. After getting some early work in New York, his film debut came in\u00a01962\u2019s famed movie version of Harper Lee\u2019s novel\u00a0To Kill a Mockingbird<\/em>, where he played the mysterious Boo Radley.<\/p>\n

It is impossible to imagine the great Hollywood movies of the 1970s without Duvall. He appeared in many of the period\u2019s greatest films \u2014 including\u00a0The Godfather<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0The Godfather Part II<\/em>,\u00a0M*A*S*H<\/em>, Network<\/em>, and\u00a0Apocalypse Now.<\/em><\/p>\n

In\u00a0The Godfather\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0The Godfather Part II<\/em>, Duvall played Tom Hagen, the consigliere and lawyer to Vito Corleone and the Corleone family. Duvall reprised the role for director Francis Ford Coppola two years later, in\u00a0The Godfather<\/em>\u00a0Part II.\u00a0<\/i>The first Godfather<\/i> earned Duvall the first of his\u00a0seven Academy Award nominations.<\/p>\n

Although Duvall had many memorable roles across a decades-long career, his most famous performance\u00a0arguably\u00a0came in another Coppola movie, 1979\u2019s\u00a0Apocalypse Now.\u00a0<\/em>He only had a handful of minutes of screen time as the\u00a0merciless Lt. Kilgore,\u00a0but he made them count. His delivery of the famous line \u201cI love the smell of napalm in the morning\u201d went down in history as one of the great quotes in film history<\/p>\n

Duvall earned his second Oscar nomination for\u00a0Apocalypse Now<\/em>, but he didn\u2019t win an Academy Award until four years later, when he starred in Bruce Beresford\u2019s soft-spoken drama\u00a0Tender Mercies.\u00a0<\/em>Playing a washed-up country singer, Duval\u2019s Mac Sledge tries to clean up his life and begins a relationship with a Texas widow. This scene, between Duvall and co-star Tess Harper, is another\u00a0quietly devastating career highlight.<\/p>\n

This is just a small sampling of Duvall\u2019s greatest moments onscreen; a full accounting wouldn\u2019t take 95 years, but it\u2019d come pretty close.\u00a0Duvall was also nominated for Oscars for his work in\u00a0The Great Santini<\/em>,\u00a0The Apostle<\/em>,\u00a0A Civil Action<\/em>, and 2015\u2019s\u00a0The Judge<\/em>, and his other notable films include George Lucas\u2019\u00a0THX 1138<\/em>,\u00a0The Outfit<\/em>,\u00a0Days of Thunder<\/em>, Ron Howard\u2019s\u00a0The Paper<\/em>,\u00a0Sling Blade<\/em>, and\u00a0Deep Impact.\u00a0<\/em>His final onscreen role came in 2022\u2019s\u00a0The Pale Blue Eyes \u2014\u00a0<\/em>exactly 50 years after his debut in\u00a0To Kill a Mockingbird.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

The man had an incredible career and produced an\u00a0enviable body of work. He will be missed, but if he had appeared in half as many iconic \u201970s and \u201980s movies as he did, he would be remembered forever.<\/p>\n
