\n\tIn a \u201cValentine\u2019s Day statement\u201d shared on social madie, Antonia Teixeira, the wife of the Lemonheads<\/a>\u00a0co-founder Evan Dando\u00a0addressed the allegations that he had sent a fan unsolicited videos of himself masturbating before being hospitalized for mental health treatment<\/a>. <\/p>\n

\n\tTeixeira said that in the weeks leading up to the incident, the frontman was \u201cstruggling with heavy drinking, prescription drug abuse, and a serious mental health episode.\u201d She said that during this period, Dando \u201cengaged in inappropriate online exchanges.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\tWhile Teixeira said he believed he was participating in \u201cconsensual sexual messaging,\u201d that belief \u201cdoes not excuse his behavior\u201d and that she was \u201cnot minimizing what happened.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\tLast week, news broke that a fan identified as \u201cDawn\u201d on journalist Tony Ortega\u2019s substack,\u00a0The Underground Bunker<\/a>, claimed she had reached out to Dando in social media DMs in October to congratulate him on releasing\u00a0Love Chant<\/em>, the Lemonheads\u2019 first album of original music since\u00a02006\u2019s The Lemonheads<\/em>. Dando allegedly replied, \u201cCool I\u2019m sorry I\u2019m an exhibitionist,\u201d and the following day sent her an unwanted video of himself masturbating.<\/p>\n

\n\tDando, who lives in Brazil with his wife Antonia Teixeira and is stepfather to Teixeira\u2019s three children, was later admitted to a local hospital to receive help from mental health professionals, his rep previously told Rolling Stone<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Teixeira said that she has reached out to the woman who made the allegation to apologize and said, \u201cNo one deserves to receive unwanted sexual content, and I am sincerely sorry for the distress this caused.\u201d She said Dando agreed to enter treatment prior to the claims becoming public and is now in rehab to address his substance abuse and mental health. <\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI have made it clear that continuing treatment is essential, and I will make decisions that protect myself if he does not follow through,\u201d Teixeira continued. \u201cI am not defending his actions. They hurt me deeply. At the same time, I believe addiction and mental illness can lead to destructive behavior that requires accountability and professional help.\u201d She added, \u201cI hope there can be room for both responsibility and compassion as he takes steps toward recovery.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tOn the day Dando\u2019s rep confirmed the artist had checked into a hospital in Brazil, Teixeira spoke with Billboard<\/a><\/em> and told the publication that the couple had traveled from their home in S\u00e3o Paulo to New York City for the Lemonheads\u2019 appearance on\u00a0The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon\u00a0<\/em>on Jan. 20, which was followed by a\u00a0Tiny Desk<\/em>\u00a0episode in Washington, D.C. However, Teixeira said \u201cthat day, he was totally out of his mind,\u201d adding, \u201cSo out of his mind, that the\u00a0Tiny Desk\u00a0<\/em>won\u2019t be aired.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI\u2019m very mad, because he betrayed me,\u201d Teixeira said when discussing discovering the unsolicited videos he had sent. Teixeira said she believes the video was messaged to the wrong woman, \u201cFrom what I\u2019m looking [at] now, it wasn\u2019t \u2026 he doesn\u2019t remember what he did. He was in a mental meltdown.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
