They also gave fans an update on their long-awaited followup LP to 2017\u2019s <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-album-reviews\/songs-of-innocence-118134\/\">Songs of Innocence<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cThere\u2019s a lot more than 25 songs in the works,\u201d Bono said in a new interview with the U2 official fanzine <em>Propaganda<\/em>. \u201cBut I\u2019d say about 25 are worth considering for U2 projects in the next few years. The album contenders are very different in mood and theme than the ones we\u2019ve chosen to put out on the <em>Days of Ash<\/em> EP. More songs of celebration than lamentation\u2026more of a defiantly joyful kind of feel to take on these anxious times\u2026almost a carnival vibe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cYou can only kick at the darkness for so long,\u201d he says later in the interview. \u201cWe\u2019re going to try and make the light brighter real soon\u2026 We\u2019re going try finding it in each other and our fans. We\u2019re gonna try to find that carnival atmosphere in our audience, where hopefully we can both show each other not just where we are at but where we want to be at\u2026Serious fun is required. They played those shows with replacement drummer Bram van den Berg while <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/larry-mullen-jr\/\" id=\"auto-tag_larry-mullen-jr\" data-tag=\"larry-mullen-jr\">Larry Mullen Jr<\/a>. recovered from neck surgery. But he\u2019s been back behind the kit for all of these recording sessions. In the interview with <em>Propaganda,<\/em> Bono says that Mullen has been \u201crebuilt.\u201d \u201cHis playing is as innovative as ever,\u201d he says. \u201cI can\u2019t get over the feeling in the room when we actually get to play together.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tIn a separate interview with Mullen, the drummer spoke about his time away from the band. \u201cI\u2019m not gonna lie, it wasn\u2019t easy missing the Sphere residency through injury,\u201d he says. \u201cBut I ignored my symptoms over a few years and just pushed through. That said, I\u2019ve had to make some changes, like how I sit at the kit and the height of the various pieces. Other changes require more practice, they\u2019re more about my approach and intention. I\u2019ve always been an intense player, but I\u2019m trying a more relaxed approach, and I\u2019m enjoying the experience.
