Ed Sheeran &amp; Taras Topolia)\u201d \u2014 are all on streaming platforms. They\u2019ve also created lyric videos for each one.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cIt\u2019s been a thrill having the four of us back together in the studio over the last year,\u201d Bono says in a statement. \u201cThe songs on <em>Days of Ash<\/em> are very different in mood and theme to the ones we\u2019re going to put on our album later in the year.\u00a0These EP tracks couldn\u2019t wait; these songs were impatient to be out in the world. They are songs of defiance and dismay, of lamentation. Songs of celebration will follow, we\u2019re working on those now\u2026 because for all the awfulness we see normalized daily on our small screens, there\u2019s nothing normal about these mad and maddening times and we need to stand up to them before we can go back to having faith in the future.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"U2 - American Obituary (Lyric Video)\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Y3ziTSYyook?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tThe EP kicks off with \u201cAmerican Obituary,\u201d which is dedicated to Renee Good, who was killed by ICE officers in Minneapolis during a protest. \u201cRenee Good born to die free,\u201d Bono sings. \u201cAmerican mother of three\/Seventh Day January\/A bullet for each child, you see.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tIn a new interview with the U2 fanzine <em>Propaganda<\/em> \u2013 which is being relaunched as a one-off digital zine and will also be available in print at select stores \u2013 Bono discusses the song. \u201cThe rhythm of the lyric is a nod to one of my favorite Bob Dylan songs, \u2018It\u2019s Alright Ma (I\u2019m Only Bleeding),\u201d he says. \u201cIn his song the child is singing to the mother, and in ours the mother is singing to her children: \u2018I love you more than hate loves war.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cThe Tears of Things\u201d takes its title from the 2025 Richard Rohr\u2019s book, <em>The Tears of Things: Prophetic Wisdom for an Age of Outrage<\/em>. The lyrics began as a letter to him. \u201cWhen we told [Ed Sheeran] about this song in a shape of a letter wondering if he could be the voice replaying to the letter, he jumped right on it but with a caveat,\u201d Bono says. \u201d [He said], \u2018I love the song, I love Ukraine. But I\u2019d rather not be a part of any political polemic right now\u2026You\u2019re not going to get me involved in politics, are you?\u2019 \u2018No, of course not, Ed.\u2019 I might have been bluffing there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tThe songs are produced by the band\u2019s longtime collaborator Jackknife Lee. \u201cWho needs to hear a new record from us?\u201d U2 drummer Larry Mullen Jr. asks in a statement. \u201cIt just depends on whether we\u2019re making music we feel deserves to be heard. I believe these new songs stand up to our best work. We talk a lot about when to release new tracks. You don\u2019t always know\u2026 the way the world is now feels like the right moment.
