{"id":58457,"date":"2026-02-19T15:11:30","date_gmt":"2026-02-19T15:11:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/musicianvoice.com\/index.php\/2026\/02\/19\/interview-with-new-york-rock-band-of-music-teachers\/"},"modified":"2026-02-19T15:11:30","modified_gmt":"2026-02-19T15:11:30","slug":"interview-with-new-york-rock-band-of-music-teachers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/musicianvoice.com\/index.php\/2026\/02\/19\/interview-with-new-york-rock-band-of-music-teachers\/","title":{"rendered":"Interview With New York Rock Band of Music Teachers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t<span class=\"a-style-intro lrv-a-floated-left lrv-u-display-inline-block lrv-u-margin-r-050 u-margin-b-n025\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t<span class=\"a-font-theme-primary lrv-u-align-items-center lrv-u-flex lrv-u-height-100p lrv-u-justify-content-center lrv-u-width-100p u-font-size-150 u-font-size-104@mobile-max u-line-height-124 u-line-height-94@mobile-max\">F<\/span><br \/>\n\t\t<\/span>or a music teacher, there are few things as rewarding as seeing a student master their instrument at a new level. \u201cIt\u2019s one of the best feelings ever to watch someone improve,\u201d says Micah Prussack. \u201cI experience that, like, every day of my life,\u201d adds her bandmate Nick Llobet. \u201cIt\u2019s fucking great.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tLlobet, 36, and Prussack, 29, have both spent years working with students of \u201call ages, from seven to senior citizens,\u201d at <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.schoolofrock.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.schoolofrock.com\/\">School of Rock<\/a> programs and private lessons in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/new-york\/\" id=\"auto-tag_new-york\" data-tag=\"new-york\">New York<\/a>. They\u2019re also the core members of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/youbet\/\" id=\"auto-tag_youbet\" data-tag=\"youbet\">youbet<\/a>, an indie-<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/rock\/\" id=\"auto-tag_rock\" data-tag=\"rock\">rock<\/a> duo that\u2019s been gaining a steady buzz. And right now, they\u2019re sitting down at a diner in Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn, to talk about how they made a thrilling creative leap of their own.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tThe band\u2019s new self-titled project, out May 1 on Hardly Art, is the first album that Llobet, a singer and guitarist, has written and recorded since enlisting Prussack as their bassist and \u201cpartner in crime,\u201d and it shows. Teeming with hummable melodies and unusual hooks, from the grunge snarl of \u201cReceive\u201d to the lighter-than-air guitar-pop of \u201cWorship,\u201d <em>youbet<\/em> is the sound of two rock musicians who\u2019ve found their wavelength.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tPlenty of current and former students will be cheering them on this spring. Just ask <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/geese\/\">Geese<\/a>\u2019s Dom DiGesu, who took lessons with Llobet for several years starting around age 11, right up through the time when he and his friends began what is now the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-features\/geese-interview-nyc-rock-band-new-album-1235413964\/\">biggest New York rock band<\/a> in a generation. \u201cNick knew that I actually cared about music and I actually wanted to be there learning from him, so he treated me as a musician and friend instead of just another student,\u201d DiGesu says in an email to <em>Rolling Stone<\/em>. \u201cI look back on my lessons with Nick as the first time an adult took my playing seriously\u2026. I\u2019ll forever be grateful for Nick.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tGrowing up in southern Florida, Llobet was 14 when their dad, a hard rock fan from Cuba, took them to see <a href=\"https:\/\/rollingstone.com\/t\/metallica\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"rollingstone.com\/t\/metallica\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Metallica<\/a>\u2019s <em>St. Anger<\/em> tour in November 2004. \u201cIt was a life-changing moment for me,\u201d Llobet says, sipping a decaf Americano. \u201cI was completely obsessed with the idea of being a guitar player. One day in ninth grade, when Llobet had a few Metallica songs down, the budding guitarist showed their dad what they could do. \u201cI had a Micro Cube amp and my friend Derek\u2019s guitar plugged in, and I played him the intro solo of<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ZiIc0HuJ78Q\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\"> \u2018Sanitarium\u2019<\/a> and the riff from<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=FLTchCiC0T0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\"> \u2018Seek &amp; Destroy,\u2019<\/a>\u201d Llobet recalls. \u201cI\u2019ll never forget: He picked up the phone, called my stepmom, and he\u2019s like, \u2018We gotta get Nick a guitar. Holy shit.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tThe Fender Stratocaster that Llobet plays today is the same one their father got them that same weekend at a nearby Sam Ash. \u201cI haven\u2019t put it down since that day, really,\u201d they say, noting that they later stripped the paint off the guitar\u2019s body and added pressed flowers to make the instrument their own. \u201cIt was like a magic carpet for me to access all my fantasies of what I could do musically.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"youbet - Ground Kiss (Official Video)\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/dy_m3wxbj0A?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tLlobet went on to spend a couple of semesters in Boston at the prestigious Berklee College of Music, rubbing shoulders with classmates like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/adrianne-lenker\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Adrianne Lenker<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/nick-hakim\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Nick Hakim<\/a>, but never quite felt like they fit in there. They moved to New York in the fall of 2013, looking for a way into the dream they\u2019d been holding close since that first Metallica show nine years earlier. \u201cI was very shy, very overwhelmed by the stimuli of the city,\u201d they say. \u201cI hid in my room for three or four years, listening to music and learning songs. No one knew who I was, but I had this universe of passion inside me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tGoing out to see shows by indie bands like Girlpool and Frankie Cosmos unlocked something for them, and by their mid-twenties, they had found a home in the city\u2019s queer music scene. \u201cAll of a sudden, the vision was clear,\u201d they say. \u201cIt blew my mind wide open. It was like my whole world exploded. It was revolution in every sense \u2014 musically, politically, queer-wise.\u201d<\/p>\n<section class=\"brands-most-popular \/\/ recirculation-modules lrv-u-margin-tb-2 lrv-u-border-a-2 u-box-shadow-5-5 lrv-u-padding-lr-1 a-span1 u-padding-b-1@tablet u-overflow-hidden\">\n<h2 id=\"section-heading\" class=\"c-heading larva  lrv-u-text-align-center u-border-color-black a-font-theme-primary-xxs lrv-u-color-black lrv-u-text-transform-uppercase u-letter-spacing-0063 lrv-u-padding-t-050 u-padding-b-0375@tablet lrv-u-padding-b-050@mobile-max lrv-u-border-b-2\">\n<p>\t\tRelated Content<\/p>\n<\/h2>\n<\/section>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tA chance encounter with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/patti-smith\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/patti-smith\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Patti Smith<\/a> at Penn Station around this time helped confirm that Llobet was on the right path. \u201cWhen you have that fire inside you \u2014 something that you want to say, but no one will hear it \u2014 it\u2019s like an extreme yearning,\u201d Llobet says. \u201cAnd when I saw Patti Smith, I thought, \u2018Oh, my God, here\u2019s my chance to see if it\u2019s possible that this is real, that I\u2019m feeling all this.\u201d They chatted for a few minutes, with Smith offering some words of encouragement as they waited for their trains. \u201cShe saw this sad, insecure little person with a guitar, and she was very nurturing. Honestly, it was just what I needed at that time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tLlobet played tons of DIY gigs with a rotating cast of friends over the years that followed, but no one completed youbet quite like Prussack, a New Jersey native and fellow rock lifer. \u201cI started playing bass when I was 10 because my friends and I, in fifth grade, wanted to make a Green Day cover band,\u201d she says. \u201cWe covered \u2018Holiday,\u2019 and that was it. They found that as teachers, they had a common musical ethos \u2014 practice hard, keep getting better, never stop challenging yourself \u2014 and complementary personalities: Prussack\u2019s organizational skills are a good match for Llobet\u2019s restless creativity, and her gift for banter helps balance Llobet\u2019s more introverted intensity.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cI write a lot of songs, and I have a lot of visions,\u201d Llobet says. \u201cI need somebody that I can bounce things off of, somebody I can be funny with, somebody that I trust. I spent years and years and years looking for what we have.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tBoth Llobet and Prussack can talk your ear off about non-standard chords and tunings, but for this album, they were more interested in using their highly developed instrumental techniques in service of something accessible and catchy. They recorded <em>youbet<\/em> over 10 days last year at their friend Katie Von Schleicher\u2019s parents\u2019 house in Maryland. (Von Schleicher, an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-lists\/best-indie-rock-albums-2023-1234927831\/katie-von-schleicher-a-little-touch-of-schleicher-in-the-night-1234928314\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">excellent singer-songwriter<\/a> in her own right, co-produced the sessions.)
