Now, the singer-actress has returned to address her millennial audience with the same relatable charm, but this time, she\u2019s not holding anything back. On<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/hilary-duff-luck-or-something-album-announcement-1235470316\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/hilary-duff-luck-or-something-album-announcement-1235470316\/\"> <em>Luck\u2026or Something<\/em><\/a>, Duff gives listeners a front row seat to the therapy sessions, marital tensions, mid-drive anxiety spirals, and fraught walks down memory lane that make up life for many a 30-something. The result is an album that feels as if the singer has invited us into the backyard of her Beverly Hills home, uncorked a bottle of orange wine, poured a glass and said, \u201cLet me catch you up on what\u2019s <em>really<\/em> gone down in the past decade of my life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tThere\u2019s a lot of ground to cover in what Duff describes as the \u201cother side of cherry-flavored Chapstick\u201d on this album\u2019s centerpiece, \u201cAdult Size Medium.\u201d In the years since she released the 2015 dance-<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/pop\/\" id=\"auto-tag_pop\" data-tag=\"pop\">pop<\/a> album <em>Breathe In. Breathe Out<\/em>., she turned her attention back to her acting career, married musician <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/matthew-koma\/\" id=\"auto-tag_matthew-koma\" data-tag=\"matthew-koma\">Matthew Koma<\/a>, and had three more kids. As Duff sings on the single <a data-id=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/hilary-duff-single-roommates-video-1235496722\/\" data-type=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/hilary-duff-single-roommates-video-1235496722\/\">\u201cRoommates,\u201d<\/a> life has been life-ing, for sure.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tDuff has said she felt comfortable laying herself bare on <em>Luck\u2026or Something <\/em>as she worked alongside Koma, who co-produced the entire record. Even with her husband behind the boards \u2014 or maybe because he\u2019s there \u2014 Duff relentlessly shares the insecurities that come with married life. On the pulsating cut \u201cHoliday Party\u201d she details a recurring cheating nightmare, while the slow rocker \u201cYou, From the Honeymoon\u201d is a daydream about days \u201cbefore you knew a hand-slap across the face.\u201d On the propulsive \u201cRoommates,\u201d Duff fine-tunes her fears and desires in the face of shifting realities: \u201cI only want the beginning\/I don\u2019t want the end,\u201d she admits atop Koma\u2019s expertly crafted beats.<\/p>\n<div class=\"post-content-image \/\/  \">\n<figure class=\"o-figure   size-large alignnone lrv-u-max-width-100p\" style=\"width:1024px\">\n<div class=\"c-lazy-image  lrv-u-border-a-2\">\n<div class=\"lrv-a-crop-16x9\" style=\"padding-bottom:calc((1024\/1024)*100%);\">\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div><figcaption class=\"c-figcaption  lrv-u-flex lrv-u-flex-direction-column lrv-u-align-items-center\">\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tThose aren\u2019t the only topics that this former child star treats with sobering candor on this album. \u201cI wish I could sleep on planes\/And that my father would really love me,\u201d she confesses on the pensive highlight \u201cThe Optimist.\u201d It\u2019s her most vulnerable song to date, and it leaves a chilly sting. Give credit for that to Koma, a pop architect in his own right whose r\u00e9sum\u00e9 includes a scatter of brightly-hued tracks in the mid-2010s, including a co-write credit on Zedd\u2019s 2012 hit \u201cClarity,\u201d production credits on Shania Twain\u2019s 2017 comeback <em>Now<\/em>, and even a Britney Spears single.
