Since the announcement of the Nuyorican icon\u2019s death, musicians have shared tributes to one of the greatest salsa artists of all time. From his contemporaries including Rub\u00e9n Blades to acts that he\u2019s inspired, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/rauw-alejandro\/\" id=\"auto-tag_rauw-alejandro\" data-tag=\"rauw-alejandro\">Rauw Alejandro<\/a> and Elvis Crespo, condolences are pouring in.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tCol\u00f3n\u2019s family confirmed the death of the salsa giant, who was behind seminal classics in the genre such as 1967\u2019s <em>El Malo<\/em> with H\u00e9ctor Lavoe and 1978\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-lists\/best-salsa-albums-1235139298\/willie-colon-ruben-blades-siembra-1978-1235139397\/\"><em>Siembra<\/em><\/a> with Rub\u00e9n Blades. The latter album landed at Number One on <em>Rolling Stone<\/em>\u2019s Best Salsa Albums list and became the best-selling salsa album of all time, a distinction it held for decades.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tOn Instagram, Blades shared a short message for now and promised to expand on his longtime friendship with Col\u00f3n in a future statement. He wrote, \u201cWhat I was reluctant to believe: Willie Col\u00f3n has indeed passed away. I send my deepest condolences to his wife Julia, his children, family, and loved ones. I will write more about Willie and his vital and important musical legacy later when I calm down.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-instagram wp-block-embed-instagram\"\/>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tAnother of Col\u00f3n\u2019s frequent collaborators was the Queen of Salsa, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/celia-cruz\/\" id=\"auto-tag_celia-cruz\" data-tag=\"celia-cruz\">Celia Cruz<\/a>, who died in 2003. One of their most beloved collaborative efforts was 1981\u2019s <em>Celia &amp; Willie<\/em>. In a statement, Cruz\u2019s estate shared, \u201cWe will always treasure the magical moments that Willie and Celia shared, both on stage and in the studio. As the title of their iconic album together so aptly put it: \u2018Only they could have made this album.\u2019 Farewell, Willie. Your legacy and your music will resonate for eternity.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/marc-anthony\/\" id=\"auto-tag_marc-anthony\" data-tag=\"marc-anthony\">Marc Anthony<\/a>, who remade several of Col\u00f3n and Lavoe\u2019s classics for the 2007 soundtrack <em>El Cantante<\/em>, wrote in his Instagram stories, \u201cMaestro, thank you for your legacy. Your music lives on forever. R.I.P. Rauw Alejandro\u2019s 2024 album <em>Cosa Nuestra<\/em> was titled after Col\u00f3n\u2019s 1969 album of the same name. In his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/stories\/rauwalejandro\/?hl=en\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Instagram stories<\/a>, Alejandro wrote, \u201cFor me, personally, your art inspired me and guided me. It showed me that what\u2019s cultural can also be modern, that creativity doesn\u2019t have limits, that what\u2019s popular can be sophisticated, and that when music is made with truth, it lasts forever. Rest in peace, maestro.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tElvis Crespo also shared his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/tribute\/\" id=\"auto-tag_tribute\" data-tag=\"tribute\">tribute<\/a> to Col\u00f3n. In a statement, Crespo said, \u201cHe was a genius artist who adapted seamlessly from musician to producer, from producer to backup singer, and from backup singer to lead vocalist.
