\n\tDave Grohl<\/a> discussed Foo Fighters parting ways<\/a> with Josh Freese<\/a> for the first time, saying that their decision to split from the drummer \u201cdidn\u2019t happen overnight.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tFreese joined the band as their drummer in May 2023 following the death of Taylor Hawkins in March 2022. In May 2025, Freese announced he had been let go by the Foo Fighters<\/a>. The band decided \u201cto go in a different direction with their drummer,\u201d Freese wrote<\/a> on Instagram at the time, and added that \u201cno reason was given.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tIn a new interview with Zane Lowe<\/a>, Grohl discussed the Foo Fighters\u2019 switching drummers following Hawkins\u2019 death, giving some context from a drummer\u2019s perspective. He explained how Nirvana had five drummers, and he was their fifth, and that while Foo Fighters has had four drummers, Hawkins was their drummer for 25 of the 30 years they\u2019ve been a band.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cSo continuing on after Taylor was really complicated, not just for us, but for any drummer that was going to come in to like, you know, fill his shoes,\u201d Grohl said. \u201cAnd so with Josh Freese, Josh is a consummate professional. He has a storied career of playing with everyone from Michael Bubl\u00e9 to the Offspring \u2026 He\u2019s had thousands of studio recordings.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThen they went on tour \u201cand we had such a blast, we had such a great time,\u201d he added. After about a year and a half of that tour run with Freese, the band took a break and during that time, the group discussed their next moves for around half a year before finalizing their decision.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIn those six or seven months, as a band, we talked about what to do next, a new direction, and we thought, \u2018OK, let\u2019s call Josh and let him know that we are going to move on with a different drummer,\u2019\u201d Grohl said. \u201cWe called, and we told him, as a band \u2014 all of us called, it wasn\u2019t just me.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tGrohl said they expressed gratitude for their two-year run with the drummer. \u201cBasically, we called Josh, and we were like, \u2018Hey man, that was awesome. That was such a blast, thank you so much, but we\u2019re going to move on and find another drummer.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tWhile Grohl did not detail the specific reasons behind their decision, he told Lowe that after they finished their call with Freese, that they decided not to address their parting of ways with him publicly. \u201cAfter that, we didn\u2019t make a press release, tweet anything or do interviews. We didn\u2019t say anything,\u201d he said. \u201cSince then, there\u2019s been a lot of talk about it, but I think Josh said it best when he was like, you know, he didn\u2019t feel our music really resonated with him, and that\u2019s really important, right?\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tFreese has since rejoined Nine Inch Nails<\/a>, and Foo Fighters enlisted Nine Inch Nails\u2019 touring member Ilan Rubin as their drummer<\/a>. \u201cIt\u2019s like we feel like a band again, man,\u201d Grohl told Lowe of Rubin joining the group.<\/p>\n

\n\tFoo Fighters are readying the release of their 12th album, Your Favorite Toy<\/em>, which arrives April 24, and released the title track last week. The band performed the song<\/a>, sans Pat Smear who is recovering from a bizarre gardening accident<\/a> that led to a broken foot, on The Graham Norton Show<\/em> on Friday.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
