In May 2025, Freese announced he had been let go by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/foo-fighters\/\" id=\"auto-tag_foo-fighters\" data-tag=\"foo-fighters\">Foo Fighters<\/a>. The band decided \u201cto go in a different direction with their drummer,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/foo-fighters-drummer-josh-freese-part-1235341357\/\">Freese wrote<\/a> on Instagram at the time, and added that \u201cno reason was given.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tIn a <a href=\"https:\/\/music.apple.com\/us\/station\/foo-fighters\/ra.1876955725\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">new interview with Zane Lowe<\/a>, Grohl discussed the Foo Fighters\u2019 switching drummers following Hawkins\u2019 death, giving some context from a drummer\u2019s perspective. He explained how Nirvana had five drummers, and he was their fifth, and that while Foo Fighters has had four drummers, Hawkins was their drummer for 25 of the 30 years they\u2019ve been a band.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cSo continuing on after Taylor was really complicated, not just for us, but for any drummer that was going to come in to like, you know, fill his shoes,\u201d Grohl said. \u201cAnd so with Josh Freese, Josh is a consummate professional. He has a storied career of playing with everyone from Michael Bubl\u00e9 to the Offspring \u2026 He\u2019s had thousands of studio recordings.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tThen they went on tour \u201cand we had such a blast, we had such a great time,\u201d he added. After about a year and a half of that tour run with Freese, the band took a break and during that time, the group discussed their next moves for around half a year before finalizing their decision.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cIn those six or seven months, as a band, we talked about what to do next, a new direction, and we thought, \u2018OK, let\u2019s call Josh and let him know that we are going to move on with a different drummer,\u2019\u201d Grohl said. \u201cWe called, and we told him, as a band \u2014 all of us called, it wasn\u2019t just me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tGrohl said they expressed gratitude for their two-year run with the drummer. \u201cBasically, we called Josh, and we were like, \u2018Hey man, that was awesome.
