The group previously released two LPs, 2006\u2019s\u00a0<em>St. Elsewhere<\/em>\u00a0and 2008\u2019s\u00a0<em>The Odd Couple<\/em>, and always had the intention to record a third album. Last year, the duo reconnected and decided to record new music. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201c\u2019Pictures\u2019 is like going back to square one,\u201d Green said in a statement. \u201cIt\u2019s a full circle moment. The spirit of Gnarls Barkley is always self-discovery. The sweet, the sad, and the strange. The universe, the adventure inside of yourself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cPictures\u201d was inspired by Atlanta\u2019s MARTA public train system, which the musicians\u2019 recalled from their younger years there in the \u201990s. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cThe song came from a childhood experience,\u201d Green said. \u201cI had a middle school principal who, every Friday would tell me to go when I would get to school. Without fail. I was in 8th grade and I would leave school and ride the train alone from 8 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. The hook of the song is literally about being on the train. Green dropped his sixth studio album,\u00a0<em>CeeLo Green is Thomas Calloway<\/em>, in 2020, while Danger Mouse has collaborated with numerous artists, including Black Thought and Karen O. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tGreen has been teasing the return of Gnarls Barkley for over a decade. In 2010, he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/qa-cee-lo-green-on-freddie-mercury-and-the-future-of-gnarls-barkley-236262\/\">told <em>Rolling Stone<\/em><\/a>, \u2018We\u2019ll get started again in the near future.\u201d Four years later, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/cee-lo-talks-new-album-girl-power-gnarls-barkleys-return-173910\/\">he noted<\/a> he was surprise by the desire for more music from the group. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cI didn\u2019t realize the importance of [a new Gnarls Barkley album] or the anticipation for it until recently,\u201d he said. \u201cI was going through an airport at about 5:45am on the way to Atlanta and a\u00a0guy from TMZ\u00a0asked me would I be working on another Gnarls. And I was like, \u2018Yeah, next year.\u2019 I was a little dismissive because I don\u2019t want to get involved that early \u2013 but it just kind of went like wildfire. And I was like, \u2018Wow, okay. People are still interested to see what we could do.\u2019 And so am I.
