But Joel\u2019s entire touring band will reconvene March 12 at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/carnegie-hall\/\" id=\"auto-tag_carnegie-hall\" data-tag=\"carnegie-hall\">Carnegie Hall<\/a> for a special \u201cMusic of Billy Joel\u201d tribute concert featuring Rob Thomas, Rufus Wainwright, Tanya Tucker, Itzhak Perlman, Betty LaVette, Wyclef Jean, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Alexa Ray Joel, and many others.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tThe show \u2014 and the long-running <a href=\"https:\/\/musicof.org\/pages\/previous-shows\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/musicof.org\/pages\/previous-shows\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Music Of tribute<\/a> concert series at Carnegie Hall \u2014 is the brainchild of City Winery founder Michael Dorf, a mainstay of the New York City live music scene since he opened the Knitting Factory in 1986. Over the past 20 years, he\u2019s staged Best Of shows honoring everyone from Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen to Van Morrison, Led Zeppelin, Aretha Franklin, and Prince.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tEvery penny they\u2019ve generated, over $2 million and counting, has gone to music education programs. \u201cOne of the things that I\u2019m most proud of,\u201d says Dorf. \u201cThey\u2019re always the first to get cut when budgets are cut. Every couple of weeks, there\u2019s a new climate change issue. There\u2019s healthcare problems. I mean, the world\u2019s fucked up, and so there\u2019s always needs for fundraisers and charities. And they come to me, and I\u2019m like, \u2018This series is consistent for music education. I\u2019m not veering.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tThe roots of the series go back about 25 years to Dorf\u2019s days on the Music for Youth Foundation, which was affiliated with the United Jewish Appeal-Federation of Jewish Philanthropies of New York. \u201cI was the youngest guy on the board,\u201d he says. \u201cIt made my parents proud that their nice young Jewish boy was contributing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tEvery year they\u2019d hold a luncheon to honor an industry heavyweight like Walter Yetnikoff, David Geffen, and Ahmet Ertegun, and give the proceeds to music education charities. But this became difficult once Napster emerged around the turn of the millennium, tightening the pockets of industry executives. Sometime around 2003, they held a meeting to try and figure out possible next steps.<\/p>\n<section class=\"brands-most-popular \/\/ editors-pick-module lrv-u-margin-tb-2 lrv-u-border-a-2 u-box-shadow-5-5 lrv-u-padding-lr-1 a-span1 u-padding-b-1@tablet u-overflow-hidden\">\n<h2 id=\"section-heading\" class=\"c-heading larva  lrv-u-text-align-center u-border-color-black a-font-theme-primary-xxs lrv-u-color-black lrv-u-text-transform-uppercase u-letter-spacing-0063 lrv-u-padding-t-050 u-padding-b-0375@tablet lrv-u-padding-b-050@mobile-max lrv-u-border-b-2\">\n<p>\t\tEditor\u2019s picks<\/p>\n<\/h2>\n<\/section>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cI very sheepishly raised my hand, because BMI and ASCAP and Sony and Warner and everyone\u2019s in the room, along with these lawyers,\u201d Dorf recalls. \u201cAnd I\u2019m like, \u2018Why don\u2019t we do a show?\u2019 And they\u2019re like, \u2018That\u2019s so risky. You\u2019re out of your mind.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tHe explained his vision for a concert at Carnegie Hall honoring the music of Joni Mitchell. When they continued to push back, Dorf made a promise that he\u2019d give 100 percent of the net proceeds to charities, and personally absorb any losses. \u201cThere was no risk to them,\u201d says Dorf. \u201cI said, \u2018I\u2019m just asking you, all you big machers, buy some tickets. And if you could help me with some talent. I need 20 artists.\u2019 And they were like, \u2018You\u2019re crazy, kid. Sure, go ahead, do your thing.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tThe Music of Joni Mitchell took place Feb. 9, 2006, at Carnegie Hall with a lineup that included Judy Collins, Shawn Colvin, Cowboy Junkies, and many others. It was such a success that he followed it up with a Bob Dylan tribute seven months later at Lincoln Center\u2019s Avery Fisher Hall. That bill included the Roots, Phil Lesh, Ramblin\u2019 Jack Elliott, and Patti Smith.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tHe planned a Springsteen one at Carnegie Hall the following April, and days before it took place, he received notice that Springsteen himself was going to perform as a surprise to the fans. \u201cMy heart started racing at that moment,\u201d Dorf says. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"bruce &amp; friends - rosalita\" width=\"1200\" height=\"900\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/jtjPO47XIbs?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tFollowing an incredible night of Springsteen music from Steve Earle, the Hold Steady, Jesse Malin, Ronnie Spector, and Odetta, Springsteen appeared and sang \u201cThe Promised Land\u201d and \u201cRosalita (Come Out Tonight)\u201d \u2014\u00a0the place went absolutely insane. \u201cBruce was one of the greatest mensches that night,\u201d says Dorf. \u201cHe stood on the side of the stage and thanked every artist when they came off. And it wasn\u2019t just related to the performance. He\u2019d go, \u2018I love the song that you put out on your second record.\u2019 He had a ten-second really nice thing to say that showed that he knew everybody.\u201d<\/p>\n<section class=\"brands-most-popular \/\/ recirculation-modules lrv-u-margin-tb-2 lrv-u-border-a-2 u-box-shadow-5-5 lrv-u-padding-lr-1 a-span1 u-padding-b-1@tablet u-overflow-hidden\">\n<h2 id=\"section-heading\" class=\"c-heading larva  lrv-u-text-align-center u-border-color-black a-font-theme-primary-xxs lrv-u-color-black lrv-u-text-transform-uppercase u-letter-spacing-0063 lrv-u-padding-t-050 u-padding-b-0375@tablet lrv-u-padding-b-050@mobile-max lrv-u-border-b-2\">\n<p>\t\tRelated Content<\/p>\n<\/h2>\n<\/section>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tLater that night, Dorf learned that Springsteen\u2019s daughter Jessica was competing the following morning at an equestrian event in Florida. \u201cBruce finished the show and he got on a plane at 2 a.m. so he wouldn\u2019t miss it,\u201d says Dorf. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tIt was a tough moment to top. But Dorf came pretty close in 2009 when R.E.M. were the surprise guests at their own Best Of show at Carnegie Hall. They played \u201cE-Bow the Letter\u201d with Patti Smith and members of her band. It wound up becoming their final live appearance before they broke up two years later. \u201cWhen they were getting really amazing applause, Michael Stipe came to the side of the stage and grabbed my hand and walked out with me to have me share in the experience,\u201d says Dorf. \u201cNo one had ever done that before.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"R.E.M &amp; Patti Smith at the Carnegie Hall NY\" width=\"1200\" height=\"900\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/FvV9ac0fWTY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tIn the years that followed, the Music Of became a regular part of the concert calendar, usually taking place in March. There are no firm rules, but Dorf focuses on living singer-songwriters. And he always get their permission. \u201cI\u2019ve been trying to get Stevie Wonder or Dolly Parton to agree to be honored, and I\u2019ve not had success yet with them,\u201d he says. \u201cThey either have other projects they\u2019re thinking about or they just don\u2019t want to be honored.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tDorf approached Elvis Costello during a rehearsal for the 2013 Prince tribute at City Winery. \u201cI\u2019m like, \u2018Mr. Costello, what do you think? Could we look at doing one of these?&#8217;\u201d says Dorf. \u201cAnd he\u2019s like, \u2018Fuck off. I\u2019m not dead yet.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tThe idea of a Billy Joel show had been percolating for a while. But Dorf decided the time had come after watching the HBO documentary <em>Billy Joel: And So It Goes<\/em>. \u201cI reached out, and they immediately responded positively. I think there\u2019s a lot of love for Billy, and a desire to hear his music,\u201d he says. \u201cThe fact that it is his band, that\u2019s exciting for people. We sold out without a single artist mentioned who\u2019s performing, and we got a great lineup, as people trusted. He played \u201cWe Didn\u2019t Start the Fire\u201d and \u201cBig Shot.\u201d Might something like that happen again March 12? He plans on going even further next time by putting the show on-sale before announcing who they are honoring. \u201cI can\u2019t tell you who, but I can tell you this,\u201d he says. \u201cI\u2019ve been bugging this particular artist for about 10 years and it\u2019s always been, \u2018Well\u2026\u2019 But we got him. He wants to do it. We\u2019re going to announce the date for 2027.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tEven though Dorf has been at this for 20 years now, he has no plans to stop. \u201cThere\u2019s no question there are more than enough incredible singer-songwriters to be honored,\u201d he says. \u201cThe list can keep going. And probably if I could fantasize, I got the next 40, 50 years that I could schedule.
