It was one of a handful of songs that differed from their appearance the night before at the venue. \u201cThis ukulele was given to me by George,\u201d he explained, before launching into the George Harrison-penned Beatles tune with a strutty romp, later switching to acoustic guitar to round out the song.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tMcCartney\u2019s show on Saturday was the second of a two-night stint, which brought fortunate fans together for an intimate set inside the 1,200-standing room capacity venue. The weekend\u2019s shows marked his first concerts since McCartney wrapped his Got Back Tour and caps off a week when the musician announced <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/paul-mccartney-new-album-the-boys-of-dungeon-lane-1235537203\/\">his first new album in five years,<\/a> <em>The Boys of Dungeon Lane<\/em> and released its first single, the reflective \u201cDays We Left Behind.\u201d While that news was fresh, he did not perform the new wistful song live over the weekend.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tInstead, those lucky enough to score entry after registering for the limited lottery-style tickets were treated to an abridged version of his set list from his Got Back Tour, performing 25 songs over the course of a nearly two-hour set. He preceded this small show with other underplays, including one in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-live-reviews\/paul-mccartney-nashville-got-back-tour-1235461488\/\">Nashville at the 4,500 capacity Pinnacle<\/a> in November, and the downright minuscule in comparison Bowery Ballroom just over a year ago with three pop-up shows in the 575-capacity theater. And while the Fonda\u2019s size lands squarely between those two in capacity size, McCartney delivered on what was billed \u2018Paul McCartney Rocks the Fonda!\u2019 and then some.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tOn the Got Back Tour, he\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/paul-mccartney-help-first-time-since-1965-1235436696\/\">reintroduced \u201cHelp!\u201d<\/a>\u00a0to the set list, marking the first time McCartney has played the song in its entirety since 1965.\u00a0It was the \u201cemotional climax\u201d as <em>Rolling Stone<\/em>\u2019s Rob Sheffield <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-features\/paul-mccartney-live-review-palm-springs-tour-opener-1235438048\/\">described it<\/a> at the Got Back tour opener in Palm Springs in September. McCartney good-naturedly acknowledged the seating arrangement. \u201cHow you doing upstairs, up in the expensive seats, I see,\u201d he joked. \u201cAnd all the poor people down here.\u201d But no matter the vantage, just being in the room was a privilege that few would take for granted \u2014 in the queue into the venue, there were dozens of folks looking for tickets in hopes of catching the rare, intimate show.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tOne dinner memory he shared involved Tony Bennett, who said at a show how much he enjoyed the acoustics of the room and then Bennett asked the soundperson to turn off the mic; McCartney then mimicked Bennett singing \u201cFly Me to the Moon\u201d off-mic. Another highlight in a night that didn\u2019t miss was \u201cBand on the Run,\u201d with him and the band\u2019s seamless delivery of the three-part epic. McCartney also went solo for a tender \u201cBlackbird.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tThe longtime arena-and-stadium-filling musician obviously doesn\u2019t need to play intimate venues, but it was clear on Saturday these underplays bring him, and those fortunate few in attendance, a whole lot of joy, something we can all use in these times.
