He\u2019s used his <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/bobdylan\">official Twitter account<\/a> to wish <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/bobdylan\/status\/1839062887408476449\">a happy birthday<\/a> to a mysterious figure named \u201cMary Jo\u201d<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/bobdylan\/status\/1839062887408476449\"> <\/a>he planned on seeing in Frankfort,<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/bobdylan\/status\/1841232347955675421\"> shouted out<\/a> Dooky Chase\u2019s Restaurant in New Orleans, and talked about <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/bobdylan\/status\/1844127739626078492\">running into<\/a> a member of the Buffalo Sabres in an elevator in Prague. His<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/bobdylan\/\"> Instagram page<\/a> is rarely used to promote his music, but is instead a hodgepodge of vintage video clips, including <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DFbJF2yx0-z\/\">Les Paul\u2019s appearance<\/a> at a 1988 Van Halen concert, <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DVCwZH1Airh\/\">a James Cagney monologue<\/a> from the 1949 film noir <em>White Heat<\/em>, and even Machine Gun Kelly freestyle rapping at a record store back in 2016.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tBut he somehow managed to up the weirdness by a significant margin over the weekend, when he shared a link to<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.patreon.com\/cw\/BobDylan180\"> <\/a>an official Bob Dylan <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.patreon.com\/cw\/BobDylan180\">Patreon account<\/a> that offers fans \u201ca living archive of lectures from the grave, letters never sent, and original short stories curated by Bob Dylan\u201d for $5.00 a month. The initial offerings includes a \u201cletter never sent\u201d between <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/mark-twain\/\" id=\"auto-tag_mark-twain\" data-tag=\"mark-twain\">Mark Twain<\/a> and silent cinema star Rudolph Valentino, claiming to be penned by \u201cHerbert Foster.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cDear Mr. Valentino,\u201d it begins. \u201cI take up my pen under circumstances that would puzzle the calendar and embarrass the undertaker, for I am told that both of us have already completed the respectable business of dying. Yet if letters can cross oceans, perhaps they may also cross that lesser boundary which divides the living from the historically inconvenienced.\u201d (It should be noted that Valentino was 14 when Twain died in 1910.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tThere\u2019s also a seven-page short story entitled \u201cBull Rider,\u201d supposedly written by a \u201cMarty Lombard.\u201d \u201cThe bus coughed me out somewhere past Amarillo, dust in my teeth and a sky that stretched out so wide it felt like it was laughing at me,\u201d it begins. \u201cI had a duffel bag, two shirts, a paperback of <em>The Sea Wolf<\/em> with the spine cracked like an old man\u2019s knuckles, and the kind of hunger you don\u2019t fix with food. The audio, at least, seems to have been generated by AI.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tNeedless to say, we have some questions: What exactly does \u201ccurated by Bob Dylan\u201d mean here? Is he both Marty Lombard and Herbert Foster? Is there really an audience for a nearly hour-long audio essay in the voice of Wild Bill Hickok? Was AI used to write any of this text? Who are his collaborators on this project? Why isn\u2019t his official website linking to this? Will he ever post something even tangentially related to his actual music? Early shows were marred by audio problems related to the placement of his microphone, but they finally seem to have been worked out. The set is still built around songs from Dylan\u2019s 2020 LP <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-album-reviews\/bob-dylan-rough-rowdy-ways-1015086\/\"><em>Rough and Rowdy Ways<\/em><\/a><em>,<\/em> but there have been a few surprises, including the 1989 <em>Oh Mercy<\/em> cut \u201cMan in the Long Black Coat\u201d and Eddie Cochran\u2019s 1958 classic \u201cNervous Breakdown.\u201d There\u2019s not a single song in the set that pre-dates Dylan\u2019s 1966 motorcycle accident, but he does play \u201cAll Along The Watchtower.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tThe tour continues Monday night at the Genesee Theatre in Waukegan, Illinois.
