Now, nearly 50 years later, one of the songs is getting its due. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tThe <em>Pacific Ocean Blue<\/em> highlight \u201cRainbows\u201d has been featured in two releases this month: the sci-fi blockbuster <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/tv-movies\/tv-movie-reviews\/project-hail-mary-ryan-gosling-1235522395\/\">Project Hail Mary<\/a><\/em> and the HBO series <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/tv-movies\/tv-movie-lists\/most-anticipated-tv-shows-2026-1235494793\/dtf-st-louis-hbo-max-2026-1235494869\/\">DTF St. Louis<\/a><\/em>. It plays in the former when Ryan Gosling\u2019s character, the teacher-turned-astronaut Ryland Grace, is describing Earth\u2019s beauty to his adorable alien friend, Rocky. It fits perfectly in Phil Lord and Christopher Miller\u2019s film, alongside songs like Harry Styles\u2019 \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/tv-movies\/tv-movie-features\/ryan-gosling-project-hail-mary-lord-miller-interview-1235534515\/\">Sign of the Times<\/a>,\u201d Neil Diamond\u2019s \u201cStargazer,\u201d and the Beatles\u2019 \u201cTwo of Us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tThe wonderfully weird <em>DTF St. Louis<\/em> \u2014 starring David Harbour, Jason Bateman, and Linda Cardellini \u2014 aired its fifth episode, \u201cAmphezyne,\u201d on March 29. The song appears in a flashback scene, in which Harbour\u2019s character Floyd is delivering a long-winded, series-long explanation to Bateman (Clark) about how he got Peyronie\u2019s disease, which makes his penis curved. In the flashback, Floyd is in Chicago for a job interview, but he breaks his wrists. He\u2019s on a rainy street, struggling to open an umbrella, as a motorcyclist drives by and knocks it in the air, up high in the stormy clouds. He catches the umbrella, staring up at it in amazement, and smiles, just as Wilson\u2019s voice enters the scene.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cRainbows\u201d wasn\u2019t a even a single off <em>Pacific Ocean Blue<\/em> (that was the euphoric \u201cRiver Song\u201d and \u201cYou and I\u201d), yet it\u2019s blissful with a propulsive melody, perfect for the big screen. The lyrics about nature, co-written with Wilson\u2019s brother, Carl, and Stephen Kalinich, are also ideal for both scenes. \u201cEarth opens up its arms for me\/And when you get the feelin\u2019\/The feelin\u2019 everything\u2019s all right, you\u2019re right.\u201d Gosling\u2019s character is reflecting on how amazing his home planet is, while Harbour\u2019s is just happy to live in it \u2014 despite his shitty day.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tWith <em>Pacific Ocean Blue<\/em>, Wilson was the first Beach Boy to release a solo album. After struggling with substance abuse and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/feature\/dennis-wilson-the-beach-boy-who-went-overboard-43037\/\">living in rock star excess<\/a> for years, he died in 1983 at just 39, drowning at Marina Del Rey in California. That\u2019s sort of true, but not really. I know the music on it. I was around for much of the time in the mid-\u201970s when Dennis was cutting the record.
